Nurses are needed more than ever now no matter what branch you go in to. Labor and delivery nurses also known as L&D are licensed medical professionals who support obstetricians, midwives, expectant parents, and newborns. A labor and delivery nurse may administer medication, provide patient education, and monitor a patient's vital signs both during and after childbirth. Labor and Delivery Nurses work as main points of support for OBGYNs and they establish a trusted line of communication with expectant mothers. Labor and Delivery nursing is a specialized unit, that many work on the floor before they go in to this unit. Although labor and delivery can be very rewarding there are many stressors that come with it.L&D is challenging because you are taking care of two patients at a time, both the mother and the baby, which is something many nurses struggle with. Patients in this unit can be very unpredictable, it is almost like a waiting game as you check frequently how much a mother is dilated. During labor, these nurse specialists will be monitoring both the baby's heartbeat and the mother's vitals. They will be the first responder to any complications. And when the physician is called in, they are second in command and act as the primary advocate for the mother.
