First recorded in 1939 by Miller's band, it was an immediate phenomenon as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller's signature tune. It has stood as a premier example of the American big-band sound from the mid-twentieth century.
Moonlight Serenade in popular culture
- In an episode of The Simpsons, Marge's mother, Jacqueline, states that Moonlight Serenade is her favourite song while at a dance with Abraham Simpson. Later in the same episode, when she is getting married to Mr Burns, Abe plays this song on the church organ in an attempt to win her back. This enrages Mr Burns, who shouts "I specifically requested no romantic music!"
- The song has featured twice in the ABC series Lost. In Season 2, Episode 13, Sayid and Hurley hear the song being played on a music station, WXO, while attempting to receive a signal on a short wave radio. The presenter can be heard saying that the last song played was one by the Duke Ellington Orchestra. It is heard again in Season 3, Episode 1, this time in a flashback, as Jack sits in his car. This choice of song could be a reference to the mysterious midflight disappearance of Miller, in a similar fashion to the characters on the show.
