KQTV, Channel 2, is the only local broadcast television station serving the St. Joseph, Missouri area. It is an ABC affiliate owned by the Nexstar Broadcasting Group. It was at one point a dual CBS/ABC affiliate.
It was founded in 1956 as KFEQ-TV, named after KFEQ radio. Its call letters were changed to KQTV in 1969, upon the separation of ownership of KFEQ radio and KFEQ-TV.
Since it is the only major television network serving St. Joseph, it must compete for ratings in St. Joseph with the stations in the Kansas City, Missouri viewing area, due to their close proximity. KQTV does not, however, compete for viewers in Kansas City.
Nexstar acquired the station in April 1997.
James Hershiser, brother of former Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser, was the longtime sportscaster at this station. (Ironically, Orel Hershiser now works at ESPN, a sister company to ABC.)
