The Donetsk People's Republic (Russian: Донецкая народная республика) is a proposed sovereign state that would be established following a referendum. Plans to create the Republic started on April 7, 2014.

History

On April 6, the day before the People's Republic was declared, pro-Russian protesters stormed and occupied the building, which was previously occupied by the local government that had stayed loyal to Kiev. Similar attempts to seize the RSA building have been occurring since pro-Russian protests began in the Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine in the wake of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. Pro-Russian protesters previously occupied the Donetsk RSA from March 1 to March 6, before being ousted by the Security Service of Ukraine.

The Regional Administration Building is currently occupied. Authorities of the People's Republic have announced a referendum on independence from Ukraine and "whether or not the region should get incorporated in to the Russian Federation" will be held "no later than ." Additionally, the new administration has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to send Russian peacekeepers to the region.
