Joan Smalls Rodriguez (born July 11, 1988) is a Puerto Rico fashion model. She has been the No. 1 model in the world since September 2012, according to Models.com, and she was the eight-highest-paid model of 2013, according to Forbes. Smalls is the first Latina face of Estée Lauder Cosmetics.
Early life
Smalls was born and raised in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. She is the daughter of Eric Smalls, an accountant, and Betzaida Rodriguez, a social worker. Her father hails from Saint Thomas and has African and Irish ancestry, and her Puerto Rican mother is of African, Spanish, Taino Indian, and South Asian Indian heritage. Smalls has called herself "a proud mutt."
Smalls graduated magna cum laude from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. In addition to her modeling career, she is involved with the non-profit organization Project Sunshine, which helps children with medical needs.
Career
In 2007, Smalls moved to New York City to become a model and was immediately signed by Elite Model Management. She left Elite after two years and signed with IMG Models worldwide, where she changed her focus to runway work. This led to her breakthrough when, in January 2010, she was signed as a Givenchy exclusive for Riccardo Tisci's haute couture show. Since then, she has walked the catwalks for the world's top designers, from Alberta Ferretti to Viktor & Rolf, and has appeared in campaigns for, amongst others, Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Lacoste, Gap, H&M, Giambattista Valli, David Yurman, Mercedes-Benz, Barneys New York, Ports 1961, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, Ogilvy, Next, Rag & Bone, Prabal Gurung, Hugo Boss, Tiffany & Co., Stella McCartney, and Versace. Since 2011, she has held a multi-year contract as the face of Estée Lauder, becoming the first Latina face of the company. She has modeled for Victoria's Secret since 2010, and she appeared in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2011, 2012, and 2013. She also appeared in the Pirelli Calendar in 2012.
Smalls has appeared on the cover of nine international editions of Vogue, including Vogue Italia, Vogue Deutschland, and Vogue España, and various international editions of Elle, GQ, W Magazine, and Harper's Bazaar. In addition, she was a covergirl for i-D, Pop, Dazed & Confused, and V Magazine, among many others. Smalls has worked with many acclaimed fashion photographers, such as Steven Meisel, Mert and Marcus, Steven Klein, Mario Sorrenti, Mario Testino, Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz, Craig McDean, Terry Richardson, David Sims, Inez & Vinoodh, and Ellen Von Unwerth.
Smalls has served as host, along with model Karlie Kloss, of MTV's fashion series House of Style. She has appeared in several music videos: in 2006, she appeared in the video for Ricky Martin's "It's Alright", and in 2013, she appeared in Beyoncé's "Yoncé" video and she co-starred with actor Michael K. Williams in the music video and short film that accompanied the song "Phoenix" by ASAP Rocky; the latter was written by Asia Argento and Francesco Carrozzini and directed by Carrozzini.
"Supermodel" status
Since September 2012, Smalls has been ranked No. 1 on the Top 50 Models list compiled by Models.com, and that same year she was honored with the "Model of the Year Award" at the ninth annual Style Awards. She was named the eight-highest-paid model of 2013 by Forbes in her first appearance on the magazine's annual list. As such, Smalls has attained "supermodel" status; in 2012, she and fellow model Karlie Kloss were called "super modern supermodels" by W Magazine, and in 2013, Vanity Fair cited them as "the new supermodels." In 2014, Elle hailed her rise to prominence as "the return of the supermodel." Richard Ferretti of Estée Lauder said of Smalls, "The word supermodel is overused, but if there is any woman of our generation who deserves the title, it's Joan."
