Early life
Sridhar was born in Chennai on 9 March 1974 to Hindu Mudaliar parents, Saravanan and Rajalakshmi. He has an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister. He was raised by his mother and his aunt (who was his guardian until 8 years of age) since his dad left for Kuwait when Sridhar was barely a year old. Even as a young child, Sridhar showed keen interest in music. During his growing up years he would constantly listen to his idol Ilaiyaraja's music on radio. He was able to identify instruments of a symphony orchestra that he would watch on television. He studied at St. Joseph's Convent for 2 years doing his 1st and 2nd grade in the year 1980 and 1981 respectively.
He studied at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram in Chennai from 1982 to 1990. He dropped out of high school in 1991 wanting to pursue music. Sridhar studied Western Classical Music at Madras Institute of Music for two years. He finished 8 Grades (Trinity College London) in both Theory of Music and Practicals in just two years. During that time he was drawn to Church Music which brought him closer to Christianity. In 1993 he married Hukali Shohe, a fellow student and Gospel singer, studying music with him when he was still 19. The same year he converted to Christianity and was baptised at Emmanuel Methodist Church (Chennai) and was given the name Joshua, the biblical character from the Old Testament. Not wanting to remove the name he was given at the time of birth he kept the name Sridhar and came to be known as Joshua Sridhar. In 1994 when Sridhar was only 20 a girl child Sneha was born to him. Sridhar's second child Chriscilla was born in 1999. He separated from his wife in 2003. They filed for divorce on mutual grounds. In 2004 he came out of Christianity and now lives as Hindu. In 2006, he married Natasha Pinto, a pianist whom he had met in 2004. They divorced in 2010.

Career
Early work as musician
Joshua Sridhar began his career in the year 1993 composing, arranging and programming music for gospel albums and jingles. He joined hands with Naveen Thyagaraj, a well known Guitar player in the Christian circle and played in his Gospel band called Double Edge, playing Rock/Blues Christian music. His first association with a film musician came about in 1995 when Flute Naveen a well known flautist (playing extensively for A.R.Rahman in the 90's) approached him to do a Gospel album. He went on to do two more Gospel albums with Flute Naveen in 1995/'96. During his association with Flute Naveen he happened to meet Ricky D'Costa a very popular Rhythm Programmer who having noticed the highly talented & creative Sridhar encouraged young Sridhar to be a keyboard player for various film music directors. But Sridhar's dream was to play only for his idols Ilaiyaraja & A.R.Rahman. But within a few months he changed his mind and decided to work with other film music directors because of his financial situation.
Film work
In the year 1996, he entered Indian cinema. His first call came from Ricky himself who put him onto music director M.M. Keeravani with whom he worked for about six months. In 1997 Ricky put him onto music director Mani Sharma this time. Mani Sharma who was looking for a keyboard player to work with him on a permanent basis had just started working on his 2nd film then. Sridhar worked with Mani through 1997 & 1998. In 1999 wanting a change he joined music director Sandeep Chowta and worked with him for a year on Hindi films. He also worked with Karthik Raja on a project. In January 2000 Keith Peters, a highly acclaimed bassist called Joshua telling him that A.R.Rahman was looking for a keyboard player and that he had spoken to Rahman about Joshua. Joshua met Rahman the same day and went onto working with him for the next 3 years. During which time he also worked with various other music directors like Yuvan, Vidyasagar, Gurukiran, Chakri and a few others. Joshua also continued working with Mani Sharma during that period. Joshua did get an opportunity to work with his other idol Ilaiyaraja in 2002/'03 but couldn't take it up due to prior commitments.
Joshua Sridhar worked as a keyboard player/music programmer for many Indian film composers (notably Manisharma & A.R. Rahman) between 1996 and 2004.
