No man's land
I am attempting to understand the inclusion of Isreal in the No man's land article. For land to be classified as no man's land it must be unoccupied. Are you referring to the land between Jordan and Isreal, in Jerusalem, between 1948 and 1967? You will need to be more specific because disputed territories and no man's land are not the same thing.--Labattblueboy (talk) 18:46, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'll look into the matter and see what I cna pull up. Currently it doesn't provide any detail so it comes across as politically motivated. Your help in providing history and context, where possible, would be appreciated.--Labattblueboy (talk) 02:47, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
GSTQ
Some instances of the two anthems being performed at one occasion:
- "Master of Ceremonies to greet and introduce O Canada... Master of Ceremonies asks all to stand and join in singing of God Save the Queen..."
- "The crowd sang the national anthem O Canada followed by the royal anthem God Save the Queen..."
- "1057.20 O Canada... 1130.15 GOD SAVE THE QUEEN..."
- "God Save the Queen - Royal Newfoundland Regiment... O Canada - Royal Newfoundland Regiment..."
- "O Canada... was sung and of course, God Save the Queen."
- "Remembrance Day Music: 'O Canada'... 'God Save The Queen'."
- "...he playing of O Canada, God Save the Queen..."
- "ORDER OF SERVICE: O' CANADA... 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN'..."
- "'O Canada' must be played and sung at the commencement of major or significant school sponsored assemblies and ceremonies... 'God Save the Queen' may be played and sung to close a program."
- "O Canada... God Save the Queen..."
I'm sure you don't require any more sources to establish the fact. I can't revert the article again for some hours; so, would you like to restore the removed sentence and I'll add the refs? Or, would you like to just wait and I'll put it all in when I can? --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 15:15, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps you need to research what is a "public event". Legions, and military events are hardly "public events". Just because the public can (sometimes) attend them, does not make them public events. They are military and government events put on for serving members and (sometimes) the public. Regular public events do not play GSTQ in Canada. And just because by law they are "allowed" to (as in the Calgary Board of Education ref) doesn't mean they do. Your writings have extremely pov statements. UrbanNerd (talk) 16:15, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Quebec City – Windsor Corridor
I use Inkscape to draw maps. It's free and pretty straightforward with a bit of practise. You can find maps in the commons which you can use as a base as long as you credit them in the file's description. I have an idea on how to draw the map so I'll try it myself. vıdıoman 02:55, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

- Looks good. It would be nice to see the counties, but it is a lot better than the current one. Good job. UrbanNerd (talk) 01:32, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't see why the counties are absolutely necessary. Most people aren't actually familiar with their boundaries, but they are familiar with the locations of cities. I would have liked to have state borders but the map lacked them and I don't want to have to draw them all myself, it's too tedious. vıdıoman 15:12, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Freshfighter9 & gang
UrbanNerd: I've been watching Freshfighter9, DJSasso, and Resolute move around from artice to article ganging up on other editors and forcing the consensus their way. Freshfighter9 and Resolute maliciously stick to their POV and bring in DJSasso to block anyone who kicks up too much fuzz as they roll through. We must have them reported and their Admin status reviewed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.24.3.41 (talk) 09:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
- With regards to User talk:Freshfighter9#I was curious...., I strongly suggest that you do not reply to that discussion. Your "shocking" comment can easily be interpreted as WikiStalking, particularly "disruption to another user's own enjoyment of editing, or to the project generally, for no overriding reason". You've had many constructive contributions in the past, and it would be a shame for you to get a major block due to bickering. -M.Nelson (talk) 02:27, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

NHL attendance
I just noticed the creation of this article... I'm really not certain that it should exist as a standalone list - seems a case of indiscriminate information. Especially since, as constructed, that article lacks any sort of historical context or information. However, I think the table might fit well at 2009–10 NHL season, and might be a useful table to add to the season articles where available. Would you consider moving the list into that article? Resolute 13:57, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
- I was planning on adding more info about league attendance, historical attendance, etc. What do you think ? UrbanNerd (talk) 14:02, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
- You would have to completely redefine this chart, as using tables like this for even the last ten years of data would become unmanageable. At present, I can't think of a decent way to do that though. If you incorporated historical data somehow, then yes, I would think it could operate as a standalone list. Even so, I think this current table could still go in the season article, with a section hat-note pointing to this list. Also, ensure your arena names are correct and in context. The Penguins were in Mellon Arena last year, while Vancouver's rink was known as GM Place. Resolute 14:14, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I was torn on using the former names or the current names. I guess the names used during that season makes more sense, with a note of current name and arena move below. UrbanNerd (talk) 14:27, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Toronto Montage Vote 2
Hello UrbanNerd. I've created a new vote for the Toronto montage pictures. It looks like you were involved in previous discussions about the matter so I would like to know if you want to cast your vote. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Nations United (talk) 01:38, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
On a separate matter, I was just reading your user page and I don't know if you did this on purpose or it is a minor case of vandalism but "altho" is actually spelled "although". Just something I thought I should bring to your attention. Nations United (talk) 01:45, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- I suppose people can use shorthand if they want to. It wasn't too many years ago (actually, it was — like 50 or 60!) that simplified spelling was all the rage: altho, tho, thru — all these were all appearing in some very reputable publications. I applaud Urban (if I may be so bold as to use his first name) for carrying on the tradition! Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 03:12, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Correct method for citing lists in legal cases
When citing a list of items as specifically listed in a legal case you should list them in the order they appear in the legal document. They should not be changed due to editorial preference. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.87.122.127 (talk) 01:28, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Great American you-know-what
Hello, U-N ! That semi-protection you put on the Great American streetcar scandal seems to fly in the face of the stricture that a page should be so protected when it is "Subject to edit-warring where all parties involved are anonymous or new editors (i.e., in cases in which full-protection would otherwise be applied). This does not apply when autoconfirmed users are involved." I am not sure this is the case here. What do you think? Sincerely, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 03:07, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

"Enormous unneeded list"
Unneeded to you, maybe, but important to have in an ethnically-diverse city especially if there's a Visible Minority table and they are not even a significant factor in the city. If you feel Demographics of Victoria, British Columbia should exist parallel to Demographics of Vancouver and Demographics of Toronto (which have ethnicity tables as do other CAnadian city-pages), please go ahead and make it - but don't delete somebody else's huge amount of work (took me two hours or more) just because YOU think it's "unneeded" or "enormous". The demographics sections/articles need more on them than just ethnicity; Canadian demographic sections in particular don't have a lot of economic or age-spectrum information, which American and UK ones do, so there's lots more "enormous" lists of such data yet needed.Skookum1 (talk) 23:10, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Your table addition was inappropriate and way too big and broad for a city's article. Perhaps you would like to create a Demographics of Victoria, British Columbia, by all means go ahead. The demographics section is suppose to give a brief overview of the city's demographics. Not a resident by resident count. If you feel your massive chart should still be included please use the talk page. Thanks. UrbanNerd (talk) 23:50, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Golden Horseshoe article
the reference to the area refers to it first as the greater golden horseshoe not the golden horseshoe, I think most people think of the greater area when talking about it because its population is substantially larger than urban Toronto. why isn't it best to quote the 8.1 million population estimate, every other large city in North America (Chicago, Denver) have metro areas that extend outwards of almost 30,000 km's in area.Grmike (talk) 09:07, 30 November 2010 (UTC)grmike

Mississauga Vs. Detroit
Hi there, I just wanted to discuss this topic a bit more.
Mississauga is now larger than Detroit in terms of city population. The rankings in the Great Lakes article should be changed to reflect this or a ranking based on metro area populations should be established. (Detroit would still be #3 here.)
Anyways thanks for your time!
All the best, Haljackey (talk) 20:43, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed, I have changed it to read 3rd largest metropolitan area. Altho I agree Mississauga is probably technically the 3rd largest city proper, this is relying on an estimate, and the metropolitan city populations of several other cities dwarf Mississauga. London Photo
Hi Urban Nerd, just wanted to clear this up with you. I added the winter photo to the London article not long ago. I am not happy with it, and I have swapped it with a much better photo. I will be deleting the current photo. If you're not happy with the new photo I swapped for it, feel free to move it to a different section of the article but please do not remove it from the article. Thanks! Haljackey (talk) 18:29, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- You seem to lack understanding of WP:BRD. I'm not trying to be rude but you seem to be adding poor images to articles and when reverted you seem to be repeatedly readding them. Now you're almost engaging in WP:3RR. Just because you uploaded the images doesn't mean you can switch them up whenever you feel like it. You changed an image without discussion, you were reverted, now please use the talk page. The London image showing Richmond & Dundas during a winter storm is a good climate image and there is no reason to remove it/delete it. There is already an image of One London Place another isn't needed. The same with your addition to the 401 article. There is already an image showing the HOH. Your explanation after readding it several times of "Let Floydian choose" is unacceptable. You boldly added yet another image, you were reverted, and yet you keep readding it. That is edit warring. Now let's use the talk page and get things sorted out. UrbanNerd (talk) 05:04, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

StatCan CMA names
Greetings, in response to the edit summary for this edit, can you advise where StatCan refers to a "Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo" as the name for the CMA? The name StatCan uses for this CMA is simply "Kitchener". This observation was previously noted on the template's talk page, but no one chimed in. Hwy43 (talk) 04:38, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks Moxy, but it appears the smaller sized labels on the map have been construed as a concatenated name of the CMA, whereas the name of the CMA is denoted by the larger label on the map, which is consistent with the CMA's name in the right margin. A place name search for "Kitchener" at GeoSearch2006 yields a result for "Kitchener ", not "Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo ". A search at 2006 Community Profiles doesn't yield "Kitchener–Cambridge–Waterloo" either. Hwy43 (talk) 06:29, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
- The problem is that the "area" did not have this designation until July 2010 - The numbers have been amalgamated/adjusted since 2010 by Statistics Canada and are backtracked and published as seen here. However there are still two sets of stats for a place called Kitchener - first being Kitchener Ontario (Census metropolitan area) and second being Kitchener Ontario (City). New publications for metropolitan areas now state all three places as seen here and here.Moxy (talk) 07:28, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
- I saw "KCW" at this Stats Can site, and also here. UrbanNerd (talk) 12:10, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

God Save the Queen
The Department of Heritage certainly seems to think it's pretty official , though points out there is no legal status , while also pointing out that "it is considered as the royal anthem, to be played in the presence of members of the Royal Family or as part of the salute accorded to the Governor General and the lieutenant governors." → ROUX ₪ 04:20, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- "Not an official anthem" is the key point. UrbanNerd (talk) 12:07, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- It is de facto an anthem of Canada. → ROUX ₪ 04:30, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- No actually it isn't. "It has no official status in Canada" means it isn't. UrbanNerd (talk) 12:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- The exact words are 'no legal status.' And "it is considered" etc. which I quoted verbatim above. → ROUX ₪ 08:47, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hockey Night in Canada song is "considered" the second anthem. Maybe we should put that up. Only the official anthems should be listed. UrbanNerd (talk) 12:08, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Canadian music template
UrbanNerd, since you participated in the discussion that re-established the already existing consensus to keep the Royal Anthem in the template, you must be aware that there is indeed a consensus to keep the Royal Anthem in the template. That consensus may be under challenge again, but WP:STATUSQUO asks that what has been long-standing (and doesn't violate policy) remain until a consensus for change has been found. Please, therefore, restore the status quo by undoing your last revert.
If you have any new argument to add in favour of your change, please raise it at the talk page. Or, alternately, if you don't have any new argument but still feel the majority of editors' are wrong, seek dispute resolution. Thanks. --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 18:35, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

- 2 - specialized city :
A specialized city is one where a particular economic activity plays (or historically has played) a dominant role in urban life. It gives focus to the town's character. This character may be expressed in specific areas within the city. Cities may be specialized in more than one economic activity. For example, Oxford, United Kingdom is an important industrial city as well as a university city.
City properties
City properties can be expressed in a number of ways such as by describing: its physical characteristics (for example, in a "tourist" city, one might observe many hotels); its population (for example, in an university city, one might find large number of young people); the employment of its residents (for example, the percentage of citizens employed in the economic activity of a specialised city may be greater than percentage employed in the same activity in a non-specialized city) and its international reputation for a particular economic activity.
Port cities
Main article: portPort cities were once confined to locations suited to their establishment, for example, those with natural deep water harbours such as Mumbai Harbour or Sydney Harbour. Now, through technological advances, these same conditions can be created artificially (Port of Jebel Ali for instance). In port cities, shipping facilities may occupy a large area of the city proper and coastline. Economic activity tends to concentrate in the city's port area. Proximity to raw materials and manufactured goods to be shipped is favoured in order to decrease the transport costs of importers and exporters. The area from which materials and goods arrive at a port city is its economic hinterland. Ports themselves may be specialized on the basis of their size, shape, depth, level of activity and the way materials and goods are handled for example, liquids such as oil, containers of goods, passengers or bulk materials. Port cities may change if the factors which allow the economic activity of their port decrease. One example is London where wear-houses and docks on the banks of the River Thames fell into disrepair by the 1970s when trading about the British Empire had decreased.
Industrial cities
Main article: Industrial districtIndustrial cities may be characterised by an "urban landscape", typified by for example, large industrial zones, heavy pollution and factories. They may also be characterised by the nature of their industry or "practice". Examples include: carpet making in Bukhara, Uzbekistan and aircraft production in Seattle, Washington.
Tourist cities
A tourist city is one where the specialized economic activity is tourism. The factors attracting tourists to a city are many and varied. They include nearby natural wonders; archeological sites; unique forms of entertainment; sites or events of religious pilgrimage and so on. Some characteristics of a tourist city include: a large number of tourists; businesses and services established to cater for tourists and attractions for tourists and associated industries. Las Vegas, Nevada is an example of a tourist city.
University cities
Main article: College townAnother type of specialized city is one where the economic activity is determined by "university life". University life might develop as a result of factors such as history and prestige of an educational center; international access to the educational centre; cooperation between university and the city itself, for example, in technological achievement, architecture, libraries, associated industries and so on; youth and transience of the population; the establishment of services for students; and residents who are academics. For example, Stanford University has a campus in Silicon Valley which cooperates with the computer industry.

Peace Tower - No one should approve
In response to your comment in reverting my most recent edit to the List of tallest buildings in Canada article, I disapprove of the Peace Tower being on the historical list of tallest buildings because the buildings I mentioned in my own comment have towers that are just as tall or taller and precede the construction of the Peace Tower, which only topped out in 1922. (St. James Cathedral's 1874 tower in Toronto is 92.9 m high, taller than the Peace Tower at 92.2 m; Old City Hall's 1899 tower is 103.6 m high.) While I do not have the time at the moment to rewrite this list with adequate research to verify that the buildings I mentioned were tallest, I could never see wrong entries added to the article like the Peace Tower, which was never the single tallest building in Canada. -A.Roz (talk) 03:20, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

You made a vague blanket statement that my edits were poor. Please provide a legitimate explanation. If you can improve on my edits, please do so, but don't completely dismiss my edits. 99.246.102.93 (talk) 20:32, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
What do you mean by "consensus hasn't been achieved." That the indicated date is incorrect was unanimous, including you. And how can you claim rhat "Discussion still active" when there hasn't been a comment in over a week? Please explain. 99.246.102.93 (talk) 03:34, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello, There has been a huge amount of discussion about the order in which countries are listed in this infobox over the years, and its current status reflects the result. Can you please discuss your proposed changes on the infobox's talk page? Thank you. Nick-D (talk) 04:14, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- There is absolutely no reason to have the US and USSR listed first except for personal biases. The war was well under way before the two even joined. UrbanNerd (talk) 04:16, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

- I think that the initial responses you got on that talk page were completely inappropriate and unfair. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:11, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

You are not doing yourself any favours
Your edit summary here is even more disappointing than the behaviour that led to your original block. Why is it that an intelligent and highly-competent editor such as yourself cannot restrain himself from name-calling, and just makes fun of anyone that expects him to extend basic civility to others? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 14:21, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Ottawa Senators
Consensus was reached at Revival (sports team), to not link it, to the Senators article. PS: Not linking is the longstanding version. GoodDay (talk) 00:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Wow, your lack of intelligent contributions is breath taking. In no way was any consensus reached, nor was there even any form of debate on the issue besides a small conversation started yesterday. I'm really trying to stay civil here man. Stop making up fake consensuses and edit warring. UrbanNerd (talk) 02:57, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Actually GoodDay that link had been there for atleast 2 years. I didn't go back any further looking...so it could be much longer than that. That being said both of you take it to the talk page at the Senators page. That is where the discussion should be. -DJSasso (talk) 02:16, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Canadian demographics
I think it's ridiculous that anyone would be offended by the order in which certain racial/ethnic groups are listed in a chart. I'm white myself, and I'm certainly not including "White" at the bottom of the chart because I think whites are inferior to other races. The reason I include White last in the chart is because Statistics Canada only categorizes people by "Visible minorities" and "Aboriginal groups", and the number/percentage of white people isn't specifically listed, but rather Statistics Canada leaves people to assume that everyone who is neither a visible minority or an Aboriginal is white. Therefore, the number/percentage of white people is calculated by subtracting the Aboriginal and visible minority populations from the total population. The reason I list white people last is because Statistics Canada designs their censuses in a way that means you can only figure out the number and percentage of white people once you've calculated those of Aboriginals and visible minorities. If it makes you feel any better, I'm not entirely crazy about the way StatsCan categorizes its ethnic/racial statistics. Djodjo666 (talk) 02:06, November 14, 2012 (UTC)
- I think the charts need to be reformatted to display the facts unbiasedly. A prototype will be made soon. UrbanNerd (talk) 03:37, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Demographics table
Seasons greetings UrbanNerd! I see you've begun your sweep of the tables that was recently discussed. I have one request, which is to use the term "Ethnic group" rather than "Ethnicity" as White, Black, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Arab, etc. are groups of ethnicities rather than ethnicities themselves. As mentioned previously, without the clarification it can cause confusion on articles, such as Demographics of Ottawa, where there are also "Ethnic origin" tables. Also I have a suggestion. I find the leftmost column now redundant (below is how it could look). Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 18:10, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
