The original building was opened in 1925, but was destroyed during World War II. New halls were built, the Große Westfalenhalle opened in 1952. The capacity of the arena is 16,500. The Kleine Westfalenhalle served also for balls, exhibitions and for concerts, of the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, until the Opernhaus Dortmund was opened in 1966.
The venue played host to the 1964, 1980 and 2004 World Figure Skating Championships, as well as the 1955, 1983 and 1993 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships tournaments.
Artists, including AC/DC, Aerosmith, Another Level, Louis Armstrong, Die Ärzte, B.B. King, Bon Jovi, Bonham, David Bowie, Cher, Cinderella, Phil Collins, The Cross, Def Leppard, Dio, The Fatima Mansions, Genesis, Die Toten Hosen, Whitney Houston, Iron Maiden, Janet Jackson, Jethro Tull, Judas Priest, KISS, Krokus, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Manowar, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney, Metal Church, Metallica, Michael Schenker Group, Nightwish, Ozzy Osbourne, P!nk, Pink Floyd, The Police, Prince & The New Power Generation, Queen, Queen + Paul Rodgers, Queensrÿche, Quiet Riot, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, Scorpions, Frank Sinatra, Slash's Snakepit, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Mavis Staples, Sting, Take That, Justin Timberlake, Tokio Hotel, Tina Turner, U2 and Warrior Soul, have performed at the venue.
In 1981, the Westfalenhalle was one of only four locations worldwide of The Wall Tour by Pink Floyd along with Los Angeles, Uniondale (New York) and London.
In 1983, Westfalenhalle hosted the Rock Pop Festival, featuring Judas Priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Krokus & The Michael Schenker Group - one of the most massive heavy metal line ups of all time, featuring these bands at the peak of their careers.
Iron Maiden recorded Death on the Road, a live CD/DVD, at the venue on November 24, 2003.
