Diaspora is commonly accepted to have begun with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. Even at that time, however, more Jews (then called Judaeans) lived outside of Israel (concentrated in Egypt and Rome). The scattering of Israel's population was probably a long process, beginning with the Babylonian Captivity in 576 AD.
