Yes, you do need to do some research before you nominate an article for AfD.
- Admittedly, Misplaced Pages:Deletion policy is not all that explicit about this imperative, but I think it is implied by If the page can be improved, this should be solved through regular editing, rather than deletion. I think that "regular editing" could be understood to include searching for sources.
- Misplaced Pages:Notability#Articles not satisfying the notability guidelines describes steps to take prior to deletion, including look for sources yourself.
- But the place where it is stated most strongly is at Misplaced Pages:Guide to deletion#Nomination: first do the necessary homework and look for sources yourself, and invite discussion on the talk page by using the {{notability}} template, if you are disputing the notability of an article's subject. The fact that you haven't heard of something, or don't personally consider it worthy, are not criteria for deletion. You must look for, and demonstrate that you couldn't find, any independent sources of sufficient depth.

Rescued articles
When I have the time, I will do more extensive searches (not just Google or Google News archives) to find sources that might prevent articles from being deleted.
