The Estonia was a passenger ship. In September 28 1994 it sank during a storm in the Baltic sea, killing 852 passengers and crew. The investigation of the accident came to the conclusion that a combination of bad seamanship, technical deficiencies and foul weather caused the disaster.

The shipwreck caused a collective trauma within Swedish society, and the repercussions lasted over ten years. Numerous conspiracy theories have been spawned around the sinking of the Estonia.
