Flag icons

Hi. I disagree that names of countries need icons next to them. MOSICON says they should “help the reader rather than decorate,” and specifically‘’’ to “provide additional essential information or needed illustration”.

But it's good that this is coming up. The guideline is not specific enough, and both my interpretation and yours may be valid ones. I'd like to settle this question once and for all, so we can stop revert-warring over this. We need to get the community to form a consensus, either about this type of use of icons in general, or this specific application of them in infoboxes. I've started a discussion thread at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Military history#Flag icons guidelines. Please let's discuss there. Michael Z. 2008-12-12 17:01 z

Linking complete nouns

Nitpicky, but I don't see how this “fixes” the links. Sentences are easier to read when noun phrases are linked as a unit, as T-34 medium tank, rather than separating their proper names as if they were isolated adjectives, like T-34 medium tank. See also WP:R#NOTBROKENMichael Z. 2009-02-10 22:17 z

Image permission problem with Image:VSS Rifle Iron Sights.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:VSS Rifle Iron Sights.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Misplaced Pages:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Thanks!

Greetings Koalorka, and thanks for pointing out Misplaced Pages:Firearms#Pop_culture to me - I was dismayed to see such a trivial section in what is otherwise a good article on the Heckler & Koch MP5. Misplaced Pages in its wisdom does it again! Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 00:05, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey no problem. Looks like you've been doing some good work on the project pages, check out the WikiProject page and eyeball the SOPs. If you feel so inclined, sign up! We could use some more enthusiastic editors to reinvigorate our efforts. Koalorka (talk) 15:25, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Topic banned on Theserialcomma

(Copied on WP:ANI and the users' talk pages and Misplaced Pages:Editing restrictions)
I'm going to one-up that. Every location in which Koalorka and Theserialcomma are butting heads has multiple uninvolved administrators participating. Their interactions have overwhelmingly been either baiting or attacking each other, and completely unrelated to article content, for a while now. Given that there's always an admin looking over their shoulder, they have no need to be reporting each other to ANI or WQA (or 3RR or anywhere else - someone else who can act will notice), and that they are unable to interact in a constructive manner, and that both have risen to the level of disruptive in responding to the other...
Koalorka and Theserialcomma are topic banned on each other. Broadly construed, neither may revert each others' edits, follow up a talk page comment by the other, comment on the others' talk page, or report the other to noticeboards.
If one violates, and no response is forthcoming within twelve hours, the other may make a single line notification to an uninvolved administrator with a link to the topic ban and the diff of the particular edit which violated it. If no response is forthcoming within 18 hours, a second admin, and if no response is forthcoming within 24 hrs a post to ANI with the same information. In no case may either party engage in additional discussion unless asked direct questions by uninvolved admins.
You both go to your corners and stay there. If one comes out swinging, they go down. If you both start swinging, you both go down.
Lest there be any question about it - this disruptive behavor on both of your parts has at this point exceeded community patience and the sum of your positive contributions to Misplaced Pages. Stop, or your tenures on Misplaced Pages are at the end. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 23:16, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

US Government websites not only host government created works - see the disclaimers for defenseimagery.mil or army.mil. Per the EXIF, and maybe per the description in the past, this photgraph was not taken by an US employee but an Australian soldier and is not public domain per {{PD-USGov}} or similar licenses like PD-USGov-Military-Navy/Army. --Martin H. (talk) 15:18, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

If it is published by a federal entity, is it not PD? Koalorka (talk) 15:32, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
The template even says it is public domain because it was created by an US employee - nothing else matters. Maybe you want to replace the image with something free from http://defenseimagery.mil/imagery.html#a=search&s=.50-caliber%20machine%20humvee (better search terms possible) --Martin H. First off, this edit wasn't nice/AGF, knock it off~! If you seriously think that J_E is my sock then why not start a SPI? Secondly, I'm of the opinion that the said image on article page can be updated to reflect the latest model/design, per WP:BOLD. Lastly, name callings of your fellow editor will lead you to nowhere in terms of AGF, you should know that since you're a seasoned editor. Why can't you have the courtesy of thinking that other editors are here to help improve the article? Other than the obvious vandalism edits, why is it that you always think of the worst of others. Have you forgotten that Misplaced Pages is a collabarative effort? I won't mince my word but you really ought to be ashame of yourself! --Dave1185 (talk) 01:49, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Who are you and why do you appear when I find myself embroiled in conflict with someone else only to oppose me for the sake of confronting me? I'm beginning to think this is no longer a bizarre coincidence. My frustration stems mostly from the fact that 99% of the editors DO NOT improve the article, but instead, whether it be good intentions or not, tear away at it piece by piece. Have you noticed that there hasn't been any significant CONTENT or cited material contributed apart from my work? Take a look through the history. I'm either reverting Malaysian space rangers from the Users list or quarreling over some totally redundant details like I am now. I'm aware of two, possibly 3 editors actually introducing quality content. It's frustrating. Koalorka (talk) 01:52, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Continue to behave as such towards me isn't going to do you any good and like I've said before, take it to SPI if you think that J_E is my sock. If not, knock it off~! I'm not here to argue with you for the sake of it, mind you. FYI, I just happen to be reading the article and wondered why the profile image kept changing, is that a coincidence? If you think it is, then it is. If you think it is not, then it isn't. I have nothing to hide fom anybody. --Dave1185 (talk) 02:10, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Good, then address the latter half of my response above. Koalorka (talk) 02:11, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Per your frustration, mayhaps you need to take a wikibreak. And I most certainly don't have to answer you on the last part since you have taken it on your own assumption that you are above the rest and that all others are not worthy of collaborating with you on Misplaced Pages (It's written all over your top statement, go read it!). Plus, I'm not here to judge you but please don't take it as your task to judge others, you are not god and you most certainly aren't an Admin here calling the shots. Take it to SPI if you want, my conscience is clear. --Dave1185 (talk) 02:53, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
What makes you think you can offer me advice? What a silly little internet character you are. I don't think you're qualified to even speak in your own defense, let alone dispensing advice to others. Run along now, there's a bloodthirsty Indonesian chargin' Malaysia! Koalorka (talk) 03:07, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
That makes no sense, just stop, it's painful to watch. I'll see you in a year or two, until then watch your back. Those Indonesians are a slippery bunch ya know. Koalorka (talk) 03:50, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
I accept your apology. Don't waste so much of my time next time. Koalorka (talk) 03:57, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Run along back to your sweatshop skippy. Koalorka (talk) 14:09, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Based on this and your multiple reverts, I've suspended your editing rights for a week. Tom Harrison 23:29, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

How does that address the problem? Koalorka (talk) 13:45, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
It prevents you from continuing to abuse and harass other contributors, and prevents you from continuing to edit war. Tom Harrison 13:57, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
So it excludes me from debate and gives the other confrontational editor a free hand.. That solves the problem according to you? Fantastic, thanks for contributing to the dysfunction. You're not qualified to be an admin. And it takes 2 to edit war. The source of the problem was that EMT fellow, who continued to revert and escalate after being warned. Thank you for uploading File:Koalorka PPS.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Misplaced Pages takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Skier Dude (talk) 08:24, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
