Never Forget is a musical based on the songs of Take That, with a book written by Daniel Brockelhurst, Guy Jones and Ed Curtis, with music and lyrics by Gary Barlow. It is an example of a jukebox musical and focuses on the themes of friendship, ambition and betrayal. The musical's plot has nothing to do with the history of the group itself. The title of the musical is taken from Take That's chart-topping album and single Never Forget.
The musical premiered at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff in July 2007 prior to a short UK tour. The show was nominated for the 2008 WOS Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Touring Production. It then re-opened at The Churchill Theatre, Bromley, England, in March 2008 for a second six city pre-West End tour. It is scheduled to begin previews on 7 May 2008 at the Savoy Theatre in London, with an official opening on 21 May 2008.
The tours and West End production have both been directed by Ed Curtis and choreographed by Karen Bruce. The producers are Tristan Baker, Bronia Buchanan, Charlie Parsons and Jason Haigh-Ellery. The set design is by Bob Bailey, lighting design by James Whiteside, sound design by Richard Brooker and costume design by Christopher Woods.
Synopsis
Ash Sherwood is a struggling singer-songwriter with dreams of making it big. He is recently engaged to Chloe Turner. When mounting debt threatens the future of his mum's pub, he realises that he needs to raise money quickly. Taking a desperate chance, Ash and his best friend, Jake Turner (Chloe's Brother), decide to join a 'Take That' tribute band set to be entered into the lucrative 'Battle of the Bands' competition. They audition for the eccentric but hard-nosed band manager Ron Freeman. With money problems of his own, Ron is looking for a group of lads he can mould into his ultimate Boy Band.
At the audition, the band come together as Ash and Jake are joined by three others: Adrian Banks, an introverted bank manager; Dirty Harry, a dim but endearing stripper; and Jose Reize a Spaniard come to England in search of fame and fortune, and to escape the clutches of his overbearing mother.
As they approach the competition, fuelled by Ron's promises of fame, the boys discover a genuine bond of friendship. However, the arrival of ambitious record company executive Annie Borrowman forces Ash to choose between his friends and fiancée and his dream of superstardom.
