"Water" is a song by South African singer Tyla. It was released through Fax and Epic Records on 28 July 2023, as the lead single from her upcoming debut EP. Considered as her breakout single, the song went viral with a "dance challenge" on TikTok. The song has reached the top ten in New Zealand, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and South Africa, while entering the charts in ten other regions including the US Billboard Hot 100.


Background

The song gained traction on TikTok in August 2023 when Tyla began posting herself doing a dance to the song that was choreographed by South African dancer Litchi, which involves shaking one's hips and kicking one's legs before pouring water down their back in time to the lyrics "Make me sweat, make me hotter, make me lose my breath, make me water". Other users began also doing the dance, resulting in over 500,000 videos using the song.

Commercial performance

"Water" became Tyla's first song to chart internationally, reaching the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart in October 2023. The song entered Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on September 30, 2023 at number 20 and moved to number 2 the following week. The song debuted at number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the week of October 14, 2023, becoming her first entry on the chart.
