This is the user talk page for me, K6ka, where you can leave messages for me.

Some friendly reminders before you continue:

  • Remember to add your signature to the end of your message.
To do this, first move your text insertion cursor to the end of your message. Then, do any of the following:
    • In the editor toolbar, select the button.
    • Enter four tilde characters using your keyboard. This will look like the following: ~~~~.
On a US keyboard, this is done by pressing the following key combinations four times: ⇧ Shift+`. Please see this chart for more information on how to type the tilde character.
Your signature will appear when you publish your changes.
  • Please remember the rules around civility and the guidelines around assuming good faith. To summarize:
    • Civility is when you are respectful and considerate of other editors, even if you don't agree with them.
    • Assuming good faith is when you assume that the people you are working with want to help Misplaced Pages, rather than hurt it.
Not following these two guidelines can lead to problems that quickly become difficult to solve. It also makes editing Misplaced Pages a lot less enjoyable than it should be.
  • Note that I am not an employee of Misplaced Pages or the Wikimedia Foundation. I am not paid to edit Misplaced Pages, this is not my day job, and any opinions expressed by me are solely my own and are not representative of Misplaced Pages in any official capacity.
  • It is currently 11:06 am, January 19, 2025 EST where I live. Talk pages are like email—don't expect an immediate response, especially if it's nighttime! Please be patient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of frequently asked questions I get, and their answers.
  • Q: I am not logged in to Misplaced Pages, and I got a message from you saying that I vandalized an article that I didn't edit. What's going on?A: No need to panic! Misplaced Pages uses your IP address to identify you when you are not logged in. IP addresses may be shared between multiple users, or be reassigned to different users periodically. For example, if you are at school or a coffee shop, the IP address you are using is shared by everyone using the Internet there. The message you received was intended for someone who had previously used the IP address you are currently using. If you did not vandalize Misplaced Pages, you can safely ignore the message. If you get these kinds of messages frequently, you may want to consider creating an account and logging in to it. That way, any messages you get will actually be intended for you, rather than someone else who used your IP address.
  • Q: I am not logged into Misplaced Pages, and I can't edit because you have blocked me. What do I do?A: See the above: you are probably on a shared IP address, and someone before you was editing Misplaced Pages inappropriately. Shared IP addresses are usually blocked from editing for long periods of time to prevent abuse. The good news is that you can usually still edit if you log in. If you don't have an account, and cannot create one because of the block, you can request an account.
  • Q: You reverted one of my edits. Why is that?A: Unless I'm reverting vandalism, I usually provide an explanation for my reverts, either in my edit summary, or in a message on your user talk page. There are many reasons for reverting an edit, and each case has its own reason. If you're still not sure why I reverted your edit, you can ask me on this talk page.
  • Q: Are there alternate ways of contacting you?A: For wiki-related inquiries, you can also reach me at the following venues:
    • Discord – I can be found on the unofficial Misplaced Pages Discord server under the username k6ka. Please do not send me a friend request; just mention my username in any public channel and I'll respond when I get a chance to.
    • Email – You must be logged in and have an email address registered with your account to use this feature.
    • IRC – I can be found on the Libera Chat IRC network under the nickname k6ka in the #wikipedia-en channel.
Please don't try to contact me regarding wiki-related matters on other websites or platforms.

VisualEditor News #3—2015

Did you know?

When you click on a link to an article, you now see more information:

Screenshot showing the link tool's context menu

The link tool has been re-designed:

Screenshot of the link inspector

There are separate tabs for linking to internal and external pages.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has created new interfaces for the link and citation tools, as well as fixing many bugs and changing some elements of the design. Some of these bugs affected users of VisualEditor on mobile devices. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.

A test of VisualEditor's effect on new editors at the English Misplaced Pages has just completed the first phase. During this test, half of newly registered editors had VisualEditor automatically enabled, and half did not. The main goal of the study is to learn which group was more likely to save an edit and to make productive, unreverted edits. Initial results will be posted at Meta later this month.

Recent improvements

Auto-fill features for citations are available at a few Wikipedias through the citoid service. Citoid takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. If Citoid is enabled on your wiki, then the design of the citation workflow changed during May. All citations are now created inside a single tool. Inside that tool, choose the tab you want (⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-auto⧽, ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-manual⧽, or ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-reuse⧽). The cite button is now labeled with the word "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" rather than a book icon, and the autofill citation dialog now has a more meaningful label, "⧼Citoid-citeFromIDDialog-lookup-button⧽", for the submit button.

The link tool has been redesigned based on feedback from Misplaced Pages editors and user testing. It now has two separate sections: one for links to articles and one for external links. When you select a link, its pop-up context menu shows the name of the linked page, a thumbnail image from the linked page, Wikidata's description, and/or appropriate icons for disambiguation pages, redirect pages and empty pages. Search results have been reduced to the first five pages. Several bugs were fixed, including a dark highlight that appeared over the first match in the link inspector (T98085).

The special character inserter in VisualEditor now uses the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki can also create a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Please read the instructions for customizing the list at mediawiki.org. Also, there is now a tooltip to describing each character in the special character inserter (T70425).

Several improvements have been made to templates. When you search for a template to insert, the list of results now contains descriptions of the templates. The parameter list inside the template dialog now remains open after inserting a parameter from the list, so that users don’t need to click on "⧼visualeditor-dialog-transclusion-add-param⧽" each time they want to add another parameter (T95696). The team added a new property for TemplateData, "Example", for template parameters. This optional, translatable property will show up when there is text describing how to use that parameter (T53049).

The design of the main toolbar and several other elements have changed slightly, to be consistent with the MediaWiki theme. In the Vector skin, individual items in the menu are separated visually by pale gray bars. Buttons and menus on the toolbar can now contain both an icon and a text label, rather than just one or the other. This new design feature is being used for the cite button on wikis where the Citoid service is enabled.

The team has released a long-desired improvement to the handling of non-existent images. If a non-existent image is linked in an article, then it is now visible in VisualEditor and can be selected, edited, replaced, or removed.

Let's work together

  • Share your ideas and ask questions at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.
  • The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 12:00 (noon) PDT (19:00 UTC). Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal. You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug.
  • If your Wikivoyage, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, or other community wants to have VisualEditor made available by default to contributors, then please contact James Forrester.
  • If you would like to request the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.

Diet Traditionally, the Nairs were not strict vegetarians, but included fish in their diet, though this was shunned by the higher classes. The love for fish was noted as so strong that it was "often smuggled in." Working class Nair favoured kānji (rice gruel), as did many Malabar Hindus. Pork was also noted as one of their favourite foods, and even high-status Nairs were noted as eating buffalo meat. Proscriptions

A 16th-century writer noted that drinking was unknown in Travancore at that time, but in 1787 AD the Maharaja formally prohibited takara (palm brandy) under pain of forfeiture of property. The Nayar avoided beef, and many did not eat lamb. In the modern day, alcohol is a component of Nair-dominated festivals in Kerala. During the pre-Independence era, consumption of beef and alcohol was strictly prohibited and doing so often resulted in violence or excommunication.

In Nair Families still Beef and Alcohol is banned please remove below points

Competitive examination

Hello K6ka, you did a favor of undoing my edit on Competitive examination. I think the tone of the article is not fitting for Misplaced Pages. The information about France and that it is "surely" the most difficult one in the world regarding competitive exams are also not accurate. I personally think that the entire content of this article can be merged with entrance examination. peace Sedai2014 (talk) 23:04, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

@Sedai2014: Hi. You've reached the wrong place for issues like this. Discussion relating to article content should go on an article talk page. --I am k6ka See what I have done 23:09, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
I already said the same thing there, did you check the article talk page before undoing my edit? Sedai2014 (talk) 00:28, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
I don't think you know what your edit to the article consisted of, so here's the diff. You didn't actually make any changes to the article, but you only added <nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki> to the page. There was no actual content being added, only something that shouldn't be on the page. Why would I need to check the talk page before removing that? --I am k6ka See what I have done 00:36, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
well, this article does not meet the criteria for a wikipedia article (I already explained why), that's what I wanted to express by inserting that sign. If you think so too, put the sign back or just advice on how to proceed. If you think the article is in a good shape per se, forget about this conversation and enjoy the rest of the day :)Sedai2014 (talk) 18:24, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
You didn't express anything with that edit, other than the fact it had to (and could) be reverted. Simply put, that isn't the way you draw attention to an issue. --I am k6ka See what I have done 19:16, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
