The Bowes Railway built by Robert Stephenson is the worlds only preserved operational standard gauge rope-hauled railway system in the world.

The railway was built to transport coal from Durham pits to boats on the River Tyne. Only part of the system remains now.

The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
