Reviewing it as a part of the After Dark Action pack, Chuck Wilson of LA Weekly called it "kickass"; Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times called it "the best of the bunch"; and Andy Webster of The New York Times compared it to Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy, though he criticized the climax as too derivative of John Woo's style.
