Corona del Mar High School (CdM) is a school located in the East Bluff neighborhood of Newport Beach, California, and belongs to the Newport Mesa Unified School District. It is a combination of a middle school (7th and 8th grades) and a high school (9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades).

Academics

As of 2014, the school has been ranked number 37 in the state of California by U.S. News and World Report. In 2011 U.S. News and World Report gave the school a silver medal, ranking it number 127 of 21,786 high schools in math and science. That same year Newsweek magazine ranked Corona del Mar High School number 172 of the 500 best high schools in the United States. According to the Orange County Register, "the school has built an efficient model that each year churns out more college-ready graduates than almost any other school in Orange County." "early three-fourths of graduating seniors transition directly to four-year colleges and universities, triple the average for high schools statewide."

Athletics

Corona del Mar has won 81 CIF Southern Section Championships and 12 California Interscholastic Federation State Championships. They have won the Boy's Water polo southern section divisional title 13 times, including nine Division 1 titles. The school has won six State Championships in Girl's Cross Country. In 2010 the Boy's soccer team won the SoCal State Championship and finished ranked second in the nation. In 2011 the boy's volleyball team won the Powerade Fab 50 ESPN Rise National championship trophy. The high school also competes in sailing, crew and surfing. Corona del Mar Football won the Division III State Football Championship in 2013.

Controversies

Corona del Mar High and Middle School have a history of controversy and both have "battled perceptions as a place where money and privilege sometimes run amok". This history includes several high-profile instances of students "hacking" into school computers to change grades; several instances of both school employees and other students posting "nude photos" of female students on social media sites; instances of students "purchasing" test answers; a nationally-known lawsuit instated by the ACLU of Southern California against the school for the school's lack of response to both homophobia and several male students' threats of rape and murder directed at another female student and, most recently, the Los Angeles Times, among others, reports of a school "'tradition' in which senior boys host an NFL-style "draft" to pick desirable prom dates.

The school first came to national attention in 2009 after it canceled a student production of Rent. The school's drama teacher, Ronald Martin, stated that he had chosen the play because he had noticed "creeping homophobia on this Orange County campus" and because "some teachers reported that they had heard slurs at school." The production was subsequently reinstated and went on to garner national acclaim with its award-winning run and sold-out audiences. Later that year the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the school that accused it of "fostering a 'sexist' and 'homophobic' atmosphere" due to issues surrounding the production and that the school did not adequately discipline three Corona del Mar football players for posting a Facebook video threatening to rape and kill a female classmate and containing slurs against gay students at the school. The school denied these allegations, stating that the lawsuit contained numerous factual errors and mistakes. The case was settled out-of-court when the school agreed to issue an apology to the student targeted by the Facebook video, and institute anti-harassment and discrimination training. The school admitted no liability or wrongdoing in settling the case.
