Though he agreed later, he swore to himself that he would destroy the Kuru race. He sowed the seeds of the climactic battle of Kurukshetra during the adolescence of the Kauravs and Pandavs by poisoning the mind of Duryodhan against the Pandavs. This results in the Kurukshetra War which produces conflicts of kinship and friendship, and instances of family loyalty and duty taking precedence over what is just.

Reception

Writing for Rediff, Nishi Tiwari said the show "gets the details -- lexicon, background score, and the sets" right in comparison to the 2008 version by Ekta Kapoor, but the actors were lacking in comparison to the BR Chopra version that aired in the 1980s. Tiwari wrote that "If it maintains the quality of writing and able actors who portray key characters, we may have another winner among us". DNA praised the costumes, scenery, Krishna's flute theme, and most of the CGI special effects, but said the story pace was too fast. The original series was supposed to be a 120 episode series but as the show raked in ratings as it progressed, two more extensions were given.

Its premier had a viewership of approximately 8.4 million people. The show has become the highest rated weekday mythology show in the last three years on Indian television.

In the week reporting in 1 December 2013, it was ranked 7th among the fiction serials with a TVT rating of 6835. The following week it was 6th with a rating of 7,170.. It has been consistent in its ratings for its entire running tenure and has mostly maintained its position among the top 5 shows of all GECs(General Entertainment Channels). The game of dice leading to Draupadi’s ‘cheer haran’ took Mahabharat at its peak viewership( 10.4 TVM) and helped the broadcasting channel Star Plus clock the highest GTVMs ever achieved by any channel in Indian Television History. The show with its excellent background music, gripping storyline and powerpacked performancers by all the actors won the hearts of millions not only in india but in UK too, clearly being reflected in the UK ratings.

It won the trophy for the best drama in star guild awards 2013 as well a number of accolades in Star Paarivar Awards 2014 and a number of other award shows.
