The People's Republic of Donetsk (Template:Lang-ru, Donetskaya narodnaya respublika) is the name for a breakaway region declared on April 7, 2014, by activists currently occupying the Regional Administration Building in Donetsk, Ukraine. The People's Republic leaders announced that a referendum on whether Donetsk Oblast should "join the Russian Federation" would take place "no later than May 11, 2014." Additionally, the group's leaders have appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to send Russian "peacekeepers" to the region. The People's Republic has not been recognized by any other state.
History
On Sunday, April 6, 2014 the day before the People's Republic was declared, pro-Russian protesters stormed and occupied the Donetsk Oblast Regional State Administration (RSA) building, the seat of the region's government. Similar attempts to seize the RSA building have been occurring since pro-Russian protests began in the Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine in the wake of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. Pro-Russian protesters previously occupied the Donetsk RSA from March 1 to March 6, before being removed by the Security Service of Ukraine.
