Natalia Vladimirovna Poklonskaya (Russian: Ната́лья Влади́мировна Покло́нская, IPA: [nɐˈtalʲjɐ pɐkˈlonskɐjɐ], born 18 March 1980) is the Prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea.

Biography

Poklonskaya graduated from the Yevpatoria branch of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. In 2011 in Simferopol she acted as the state prosecutor in the high profile trial of a former deputy of the Supreme Council of Crimea, charged with membership of an armed gang named Bashmaki (lit. "The Boots"). In the same year she was appointed the inter-district environmental prosecutor of Simferopol. Following that, she was transferred to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office in Kiev, where she served as a senior prosecutor until what happened next.

On February 25, 2014, Poklonskaya handed in a resignation, in which she wrote that she was ashamed to live in the country where "bandits were allowed to walk the street freely" (a reference to radical Euromaidan activists). The resignation was not accepted. Instead, she was given a vacation and left Kiev for Crimea where her parents lived.

She was appointed Prosecutor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea on 11 March 2014. Poklonskaya was appointed to the position by Sergei Aksyonov after the previous prosecutor had remained loyal to the government in Kiev; the position had also been reportedly rejected by four other men before Poklonskaya accepted. She had previously voiced criticism of the opposition protests in Ukraine and described the change of government in Kiev as an "anti-constitutional coup". In response, the Ukrainian government launched a criminal case against her and stripped her of the civil service rank of "counsellor of justice".

Internet popularity

As the idiom goes, 'Beauty saves the world'.

Poklonskaya, interviewed 19 March 2014

After assuming the office of Prosecutor of Crimea on 11 March 2014, Poklonskaya held a press conference later that day. Poklonskaya soon caught attention on the Internet because of her particular attractiveness. A video clip of the press conference was uploaded by a Japanese poster onto YouTube; in English it was titled 'New Attorney General of Crimea is beautiful', in Japanese the title stated 'Too beautiful'. The clip (which featured no translation) quickly racked up more than 300,000 YouTube views within a day. She went viral in not only Japan, but also China, while receiving coverage from Chinese news outlets like China News Service and Guangming Online. She was noted to have been discussed on Reddit, the Chinese microblog service Weibo and the Russian social network Vkontakte.

Following her press conference, an onslaught of anime-style moe fanart of Poklonskaya was created and uploaded to the internet, most notably on the Japanese artwork-sharing website Pixiv. This was reported by major Russian media outlets like Voice of Russia, Russia Today, and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, as well as international media outlets like BBC News and Bloomberg News.

Following the flood of Poklonskaya fanart, numerous real-life images were discovered on social media sites and also went viral around the world.
