Vittorio Arrigoni (Besana in Brianza, 4 February 1975 – Gaza, 15 April 2011) was an italian reporter, writer and peace activist.
Biography
Born in an antifascist family, Arrigoni was known especially for his activity in support of the Palestinian people, in particular for the population of the Gaza Strip; he criticized the authoritarian and theocratic politics of Hamas in the administration of the Gaza Strip and of Fatah in the administration of West Bank.
Member of the NGO International Solidarity Movement, he moved to Gaza in 2008 to report information about the condition of the Palestinians in the Strip.
In 2008 was injured and imprisoned by the Israeli army for defending 15 Palestinian fishermen who were fishing in international water
He worked with Radio Popolare and as reporter for the Italian newspaper Il manifesto; in the 2009 published the book Restiamo umani, a collection of his reportages from Gaza, translated in english as Gaza, Stay Human with a preface by the Israeli historian Ilan Pappé; the book was translated also in spanish and german.
During the Operation Cast Lead he gained international fame since his blog Guerrilla Radio was the only source from Gaza in a moment when professional journalists had not access to the strip.
Kidnapping and death
After several death threats, in April 14, 2011 he was kidnapped by a terroristic group called Tawhid wal-Jihad.
The day after, his corpse was found during a blitz in a inhabitation in Gaza City.
