ArbCom Elections
I have elected to not vote in the ArbCom elections this year. I believe that the decision to use a voting system that reveals who has voted for whom, and that allows users to actively oppose candidates with commentary amounts to begging for users to violate NPA and engage in incivility. Further, I fear that we will see the departure of many desperately needed Wikipedians over things that are said during the voting. I cannot and will not participate in something that I belive will only serve to widen the chasms already existing in the Misplaced Pages community and further tear Misplaced Pages apart at the seams. The unity of the Misplaced Pages community will be in my prayers over the coming weeks. Grace, Light, and Peace always, -- Essjay · Talk 17:53, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Please feel free to leave me a message. I will generally respond to comments I believe are emergent on your talk page; most often, I respond to casual commmentary here. If you prefer, we can continue a discussion on your talk page, just let me know.

I appreciate hearing from individuals who have found mistakes (spelling, etc.) in my posts; these turn up all too often, as I tend to type very fast and not catch spelling mistakes in my edits. If you find an error, you may get an indulgence. (WikiSins only!)

As a theology professor and scholar of Roman Catholicism, I am happy to answer questions about the Church. Be warned that my answers to questions about the Church always reflect the Church's official position, but are often long!

It's important to remember: I'm not a Catholic, I'm a scholar of Catholicism.

Sure will. -- Essjay · Talk 23:47, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps add // <nowiki> // at the start of the file and at the end? Titoxd 23:56, 7 January 2006 (UTC) (Comment Edited by Essjay for clarity)

Didn't work for me. I asked in one of the IRC channels, but nobody knew; apparently it appears for some and not for others. -- Essjay · Talk 00:05, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
There, I changed something and it worked for me. Just make sure you purge your cache. Titoxd 00:12, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Didn't know how to create a new discussion in the YTMND discussion page so I didn't know how to ask.

Thanks. Klosterdev 08:41, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm so very confused; was I somehow involved with YTMND and am not aware of it? The only connection I see between myself and your account is that I left a welcome message for you six months ago. Is there some way I can help you? :-S -- Essjay · Talk 08:45, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

XD. I'm an idiot. I clicked on the wrong user. Sorry about that. Klosterdev 08:50, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

That's okay; if there is anything I can do for you, let me know. I'm always here to help! -- Essjay · Talk 08:51, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Many thanks for your support on my request for adminiship, I'm sure you'll be glad to know the final result was 92/1/0. I am now an administrator and (as always) if I do anything you have issue with, please talk about it with me.

btw I am so delighted that you are still around, I'm not sure how to express it best. --Alf 11:38, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Go block a vandal for me! ;-) Welcome to the Cabal! -- Essjay · Talk 11:41, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Did my first one last night :) I am spending today mostly re-reading 'admin' pages, will whack a few more tonight no doubt. --Alf 15:50, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Pgk's RFA

Thanks for your support on my request for adminship.

The final outcome was (80/3/0), so I am now an administrator. I was flattered by the level of support and the comments, so I'm under real pressure not to disappoint, thus if you have any queries, suggestions or problems with any of my actions as an admin then please leave me a note --pgk 12:18, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Just happend to see that you're back

and I'm delighted. You are definitely one of the Wikipedian's I most look up to, and I was deeply saddened to see that you had left. I have always been as "inactive" as you say you are going to be, and I haven't (yet) been faced with any insults or attacks that have got to me, but I completly sympathize with the reasons why you left, and just want to express my gratitude and happiness that you are back. Yay! JesseW, the juggling janitor 09:43, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am constantly suprised and honored to hear the nice things other Wikipedians have to say about me. I've always tried to be nothing more than myself, and I'm honored to know that I'm appreciated for it. -- Essjay · Talk 11:09, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Spamming from User:80.117.142.110 again

Hello Essjay, User:80.117.142.110 blocked by you for spamming on (among others) Rimini has been deblocked and has been spamming again on Rimini. Husky 11:24, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Looks like he's stopped for now; nothing since your last warning. If he starts up again, run it over to WP:AIV. -- Essjay · Talk 11:36, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. Husky 11:56, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Fair Use Images

Thanks...that ought to work well (though not as well as the helmet!). I don't really work much with images, so I'm not always sure of the rules. I had noticed a bit of controversy around WP, but haven't really looked into it. I hope the controversy is resolved soon. Thanks again...Keith 12:48, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Problem editors

BTW, I've seen nothing to indicate you're a problem editor, coddled or otherwise. Perhaps I could have been less harsh, I didn't meant to imply that any particular person was a problem. I do think that cutting off communication is sometimes an example of letting personal disagreements get in the way of working on the encyclopedia, and shouldn't be encouraged. I'd rather see someone ignore talk page messages they think are unproductive, than tell the person not to post anymore. Obvious trolls and troublemakers are another story, of course. Anyway, hope you don't take it the wrong way. I think I've been long-winded enough at AN/I but wanted to clarify in case you were offended. Friday (talk) 15:24, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

That's okay, I figured you didn't mean me. ;-) I was just trying to give a gentle reminder that sometimes when we categorize people, we end up including those we would otherwise wish not to include. I certainly wouldn't let that particular precedent allow a disruptive editor to continue disruption, but I do think that when a given editor has had enough of being harassed (particularly when the commentary is intended to harass, but does not cross the line of NPA, etc.) The problem with ignoring, and I know this from experience, is that it causes the editor who is being harassed to look like they are unable or unwilling to respond. To an outside viewer, who doesn't know that the reason the person doesn't respond is that they are being harassed, it appears that the good editor is actually the bad editor. Some of the trolls we see here are quite crafty at making thier trolling look innocent to an otherwise out-of-the-know viewer. I like knowing that if it is pushed too far (and of course, immediately saying "Don't post here again" to a user who is acting in good faith doesn't qualify as being pushed too far) there is the option of prohibiting further contact. -- Essjay · Talk 16:23, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

ArbCom elections

I agree completely. Though I did vote in this election for a select few, I do agree that it should have been something more closed, a la Special:Boardvote (If the board can have a special voting system, why can't the ArbCom? Especially if it's a sitenotice...!) In any event, thank you for doing your best to keep Misplaced Pages as a community together, and peace, light, and grace be with you. -Mysekurity 22:14, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

I appreciate you saying that. Actually, if I understand right, there was a system similar to Boardvote used last year...The way I heard it put was that it would have made "most developing nations drool." We had an extended conversation with Jimbo in #wikimedia, but he was intent that the current system would be used, and that there would be no problems. I hope he's right, but am not optimistic. -- — Essjay · Talk 22:16, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
I agre that this will become more like an RfA, which has in the past caused many to leave the project. Not that there shouldn't be trusted users, but it shouldn't be such a big deal. -Mysekurity 00:47, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
I also agree; this system of voting has caused too many personal attacks and forced too many users to quit, users we desperately need here. I would not have voted, but I have too much respect for Redwolf24 not too. I will not be opposing or supporting any others. - Pureblade | 00:56, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

I just realized...

...that I have been remiss. It's good to see you back on Misplaced Pages my friend. It's good to know there are people such as yourself working on this project. :)

As they say in the movies, "ooh behave". Seriously, though, we are trying to write an encyclopaedia here, so don't make joke edits. Some readers looking for a serious article mightn't find them amusing. Remember, millions of people read Misplaced Pages, so we have to take what we do a bit seriously here. OK? Titoxd 02:47, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Unacceptable intransigence, audacity, tenacity — sheer insolence! Especially the hat! Shame on you for corrupting our children to wear hats whilst inside a microwave. Now, a tinfoil helmet, on the other hand... So, yeah, grrr! El_C 03:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

deeceevoice departure

You can do whatever you like to User talk:Jim Apple/deeceevoice departure. I am not convinced enough by your arguments to add an {{AFD}} to it. I have added an intro which might change your mind, though it might just make you more angry.

I think you will find I have not been abusing dcv, though many others have been. I am curious about her, and about what it takes to tear oneself away from wikipedia.

What is MfD? -- Jim Apple 06:11, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

The first recreation was an edit conflict; the second was a tombstone noting that the page is gone. Can't I have and empty space, noting what happened? I am not recreating the content proper. Jim Apple 06:44, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

That's fine; as I noted on ANI, I figured it was an edit conflict, but it was still the same content that had just been deleted back on the page, so it needed to be redeleted. You're welcome to have the notice that is there stay there as far as I am concerned. -- — Essjay · Talk 06:51, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

statuschanger screenshot

Thanks for adding the statuschanger screenshot to User:Topaz/Wikiscripts - I was planning on doing it at some point but never quite got around to it. ~Topaz 10:35, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, I've updated the statuschanger to let you put the controls in your personal bar (the links along the upper left) instead. Takes up much less room, have a look. ~Topaz 23:02, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
I like your userpage a lot, Topaz! Still, if I may be so bold as to make a suggestion... Yes, that's right, a picture of a cat! El_C 03:17, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm not one much for cats, what about some canine creature? ...or did you have a cat in mind? I liked my userpage a lot too until I realized that it only looks good on the widescreen computer I was using a week or so ago. I also need to find something better than bulleted lists of links. I almost want to join Esperanza just to trade userpages with someone for a while. ~Topaz 04:21, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Trading spaces isn't limited to EA memebers; go ahead and list yourself there. -- — Essjay · Talk 04:26, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Qwertysoup

Hi there Essjay. I would like for you to join in of the conversation about the above user at Misplaced Pages talk:Are You a Wikipediholic Test about his possible fake score on the test. I contacted you because you were one of the top scorers on the test, so you could probably tell if the score is fake or not. We would appriciate your input. SWD316 21:20, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah! Is this a lame argument I'm hearing? Is someone upset because this guy made up/incorrectly scored more points than the entire community combined? I agree that this is probably a mistake, but I don't get why everyone's jumping on this guy over a test score! I'll leave a note there, but it just seems like there's a good deal of hostility...may I ask why? -Mysekurity 22:23, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I never meant this in an angry tone at all. As for hostility between Qwertysoup and others, I can't control. This isn't an lame edit war were talking about. It is lame to go after someone because of a test score but purposely putting false information on Misplaced Pages is something most people tend to frown upon. :-( I wasn't asking for a block/ban on him, just that he remove a false test result.
