Slobodan Milosevic became president of Serbia under the communist government of the former Yugoslavia. After the collapse of communism in Europe he reestablished himself as a Serb nationalist. He led the Serbs as they fought civil wars in Croatia in 1991, Bosnia from 1992 to 1995, and Kosovo in 1999. He lost power in 2000 and was later handed over to the ICTY by the new government.
He has been charged with genocide in Bosnia and war crimes in Croatia and Kosovo and is expected to stand trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague starting in February 2002.
