JayHenry, you get around more than me - is this where we're going with referencing now? This is the scariest thing I've seen in article space yet, and it actually confirms my personal reductio ad absurdum of the sensibility here, in which this site will no longer be an encyclopedia per se, but rather it will consist of sets of clauses marked up in wiki-code that indicate what source they've been paraphrased from. This horrible prognostication of mine is the formalization of an "article" (a human, written thing) into an "object" (a computer programming entity having defined attributes and behaviors). We're going to end up with "articles" that are really "database records", aren't we? Is anyone going to stop this? I don't go around saying I'm smart, but am I really the only one who can conceptualize any of this and see why there's a problem? Or have the rest just left wikipedia, or never joined? It's a worry, and I'm not doing the rhetorical glib routine here (except for the rhetorical questions, of course, at the end!) Whiskeydog (talk) 09:17, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Jay, I was hired at JPM in 1994 a little after the book came out, but didn't get a copy...perhaps that's a newer policy. I have the book now and haven't quite finished it but have read the sections on Pierpont. As for the Dow data, I have it through my quote service. I could send you a file of the raw data if you're good at making charts out of it. Otherwise, I could try myself though I'm not sure of how it looks. The chart I use has a copyright attached to it and probably wouldn't be allowed.
On the Dow chart, yes, I guess I'd just use the weekly closing price instead of the way you have it. You also need to note on the chart that it's the Dow Industrials, and then "weekly close" assuming you go with that. Also, you need to divide the price scale by 10. CQG data do not have a decimal point, so in reality the Dow in 1907 peaked at 103, not 1030. The time frame you chose looks good. Finally, I think I'd go with a white background instead of black, and use a dark color for the prices. If you only have the option of a black background, then use a white or yellow line for price. Most people in technical analysis are used to either a line chart of closing prices, or a bar chart with OHLC. Having all three superimposed in different colors is a very non-standard format, so while it would be nice to have the total range for the week I think all the different colors are a little unusual. Does Excel have a chart wizard that can make bar charts? If you're not familiar with Excel I guess I can take a look, though I'm a novice with it. --Robertknyc (talk) 04:51, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, you already know more about Excel than I do, so I'll defer to you on that. I think I like the tighter time frame on the first chart to highlight more closely the 1907 period. Obviously we can edit the posted chart at any time, and perhaps someone with some good charting software will show up who can create a bar chart.
So you're going to stick with the OHLC? I noticed one more thing, can you tighten the y-axis scale, say from 350-400 instead of 0 on the bottom, and 1100 on the high side instead of 1200? That would blow up the data a bit more so it would be easier to see.

They finally put Tulip mania up on the schedule for tommorrow (almost today). With
today's (yesterday's) vote on the bailout plan and -777 on the DJIA, it looks like it's gone up on probably the most interesting day possible!
I've read Misplaced Pages:Misplaced Pages Signpost/2008-06-09/Dispatches on how to monitor changes during the day. We'll see what happens. Frankly, I expect that there might be some problems with people calling today(y) a crash of unprecedented proportions, the sky is falling, and saying the article has an ostrich-like POV. Not to get too defensive, but I worked a lot on an article that became known as January 2008 stock market volatility trying to convince people that the world had not ended on Martin Luther King's birthday. (See the 1st day's edits, the article then was known as Black Monday (2008)).

wat? Facepalm. This is what happens when you have people with social welfare functions that have a 2-6 year horizon determining long run fiscal policy. Let's make a 700 billion dollar spending bill which was obviously going to be financed by borrowing and attach tax cuts to it, which will cause other spending to be financed by borrowing. Yeah, CSD may not be the best place - but the question is where is anyplace that would deal with this? The Jan.21st article was a nightmare (and linked to the news section on the main page). Editors would write "Al Jezeera said it was a crash" or "OK, it didn't crash more today, but let's wait until tomorrow," and "If you don't like the article, go for an AFD" which of course would take a week. Just check out talk:January 2008 stock market volatility.
I'll write a proposed guideline, if anybody can tell me where it fits. I don't think I could write a template however. Maybe a big purple box saying "Misplaced Pages cannot offer investment advice, nor can it predict the direction of the stock market. If you are interpreting this article as saying that a stock market crash is ongoing and that you should panic, either you or the article is terribly wrong." Maybe include a picture from the cover of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I'm done - enough venting for today. BTW, I left you a message on Protonk's talk page about "salt and matches." Inability to disengage?
Well, the RFA is going down in flames, which I kind of expected, but your stated reason surprised me. What makes you feel that I can't disengage? Aside from maintaining some of the redirects as stable, I don't participate in fiction much any more. I debate things on the various RFCs and guidelines, and got involved a bit when I saw some of the recent AFDs turning into anti-TTN rallies, but I don't wade into that mess anymore. To argue that Phil Sandifer and I don't get along well isn't completely untrue. We get along better than that particular exchange would indicate. We even had an interesting debate as to whether his proposed changes to WP:N would actually make me notable (scroll down a bit).
As for Bulbasaur, it was the edit war during January, when people undid the redirect to the list of Pokemon, and started screaming that Bulbasaur was more notable than other Pokemon that soured me, and was the source of the quoted comment. Point of fact, it isn't. There are still no third-party sources in that article that directly discuss Bulbasaur (with the exception of one joke about pesto) ... it's all Nintendo licensed material. A small group of editors decided that they didn't have to follow the same guidelines as everyone else, and that they could have an article on their favorite topic simply because they wanted one. All I asked then, and now, is that someone demonstrate the existence of a few independent, third-party sources that examine Bulbasaur directly and in detail. Until such sources can be produced, there shouldn't be an article. And yes, I have a very low opinion of editors that say I don't care what WP:N says, I'm going to keep undoing the redirect on this article and you can't stop me, or pile on to AFDs about the article falsely claiming that it meets WP:N when in fact, it does not.—Kww(talk) 16:47, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Yllosubmarine (talk·contribs) has been a member of the Novels WikiProject for nearly two years, and a coordinator since May. Aside from her work outside the project (including four FAs and six GAs in various areas), she has been active in the Project's Assessment and Peer Review departments. She hopes to continue in these roles as well as help encourage more activity and community research within the Project. With the upcoming coordinator election, she hopes that others will volunteer to become more active in their roles as Project members so that we can continue to provide quality articles to the readers of this encyclopedia.
On the advice of Coordinator Maria, the newsletter is now only distributed to active listed members of the Novels Project. A new section has started with this issue called 'In Focus', which will feature various members and task forces each month.
Members are requested to post any news items to the Tip Line (found above) to make sure it reaches the next newsletter before closing date, which is always the last day of the preceding month. Any task force news should be added by the coordinator of that task force. Having news items helps inform members of what is happening at the various task forces and so can be a way of encouraging more membership and participation.
Editors are required to assist with the newsletter for Task Force News and Peer Reviews & Assessments News, which involves the gathering of news items from the main project and the various task forces. These positions may be applied for at the Job Centre.

I just wanted to let you know that I understand that your opposition was in good faith, and thank for your comments on how unreasonable the forest fire became in response to your single match.
I'm going to try to interpret this resounding defeat as a statement that I should choose my words more carefully in the future, and remember that every statement I make gets recorded forever, just waiting to get carefully transcribed onto my next RFA. I would go insane if I believed that it was repudiation of what I truly meant: that no editor should consciously and willfully ignore guidelines and policies, and editors that repeatedly do so should not be rewarded for or supported in doing so.

Saw your message on User talk:Protonk re being pessimistic: "If a paragraph explanation of short selling still comes across as an abstract area of finance I'm definitely worry about explaining fixed income arbitrage, Over-the-counter derivative/swap trading, etc. to the FAC crowd."
The key is to have a bunch of explanatory sub articles to wikilink to. I worked on several Indian architecture articles using architectural terms in languages like Kannada, Tamil etc. FAC cried out "explain what that means!", so I wrote little sub articles just big enough to explain each term. A little bit easier there, as I could find pictures from India of temple features to illustrate. But still, the time has come for people to understand finance. Even Tony at FAC was surprisingly mild, once he got over his initial flip out over the word "antitrust" in your article (which he say "even Americans" probably didn't understand).
FAC's first reaction was "oh, its American, so I'm not expected to know about it". But I think your article gave them pause to consider maybe this is something they really should have a grasp of.
I tried to do little articles on "bear squeeze" and "rich man's panic" but couldn't find references quickly enough for your FAC. I hope you consider doing some of these articles you are talking about. I would even get some books and attempt to understand finance in order to help out. Autumn 2007 was huge here, but 2008 was not so crash hot, but it is funny, if we have a warm-hot spring and lots of rain, it tricks lots of the northern hemisphere introduced species like Lactarius deliciosus and Suillus luteus into fruiting under the pine plantations in spring. otherwise we wait till easter. I find both these ok-ish, but much prefer Pleurotus eryngii, which are hitting the markets big-time here (yum), and there are always dried morels and porcini (also yum), I had dried Boletus badius the other day which was milder than procini but nice in a different way, and Wood Blewits are being cultivated here and sold, now they are yummy...No-one really eats native Oz species as almost all are of unknown edibility. Summer here will mean a few boleti and amanitas may pop up after rain, none that I would be game to eat of course.
