Diaspora is commonly accepted to have begun with the destruction of the Second Temple (see: Destruction of Jerusalem) in 70 AD. Even at that time, however, more Jews (then called Judaeans) lived outside of Israel (concentrated in Egypt and Rome). The scattering of Israel's population was probably a long process, beginning with the Babylonian Captivity (586 BC through 538 BC).
