IPL Kolkata is a franchise of the eight team Indian Premier League. It was bought on January 24 2008 by Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta.

Etymology

Players

Sourav Ganguly is the designated icon player for the Kolkata franchise, he will also be the captain. During the player auction IPL Kolkata managed to acquire two genuine fast bowlers in Shoaib Akhtar and Ishant Sharma. The bid of $950,000 for Sharma also made him the highest priced bowler in the league. Additionally IPL Kolkata managed to get Australian captain Ricky Ponting for an surprising low price of $400,000.
