Misplaced Pages vs Wikibooks problems

Hello Angela,

first I want to excuse my bad English. But I hope, it is understandable. I do not know you. But as far as I can evaluate, you are one of the persons, who care about the the relations between the Wikimedia projects. If not, I would be thankful, if you could tell me, where to ask about the following problem.

Wikimedia saves the knowledge of the world. That is the motto of Wikimedia. But there is a problem in the (German) Wikimedia to do so. Misplaced Pages has many articles concerning commodities like a bicycle or a computer programm. If you want to save the knowledge about this things, they cry for giving useful hints and guides. Many of the articles contain useful gold-worth hints, but they are called not encyclopedically and thus not allowed at Misplaced Pages and to be deleted. German Misplaced Pages has a special rule, which interdicts hints in a Misplaced Pages article. The question is, where to save the gold-worth stuff. There is for instance an Hightech article in the german wikipedia, which is written by one of the best expert (possibly the best), you can ever reach in Germany about the stuff. This article is very good. But because of his hints of the expert, it is of course POV and not encyclopedically. But without the hints the article would be crap. Further the hints seperated without the encyclopedical stuff are also crap. A good article about complicated hightech stuff is simply not possible, if you have to separate the encyclopedical stuff and the hints. The question now is, where to save the not encyclopedical stuff, which is crap, if it is separated. A solution could be to make links in Misplaced Pages to the hints. But which wikimedia project is the right on, where to link to? (German) Wikibooks does not want to have it, because the hints are crap without the encyclopedical stuff. Thus you have to copy the stuff from Misplaced Pages to Wikibooks and include the hints there. Thus the encyclopedical stuff has to be updated twice: in Misplaced Pages and in Wikibooks. But nobody will do so. Now is the question, how to find a solution and where to save the hints. I discussed this problem in German Misplaced Pages, Wikibooks and Misplaced Pages IRC chat as well. But it seems to me as if the administrators of the both projects only care about, what they do not want to have in their projects. Nobody cares about problems which concern the relation and co-ordination of this both projects. They told me to ask here on Wikimedia for advice. What can be done to solve the problem, which concerns in particular hightech articles?

Here are the links, where this problem is discussed: -- 84.132.59.68 12:57, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

If neither Misplaced Pages nor Wikibooks feel the content is useful, please email me to discuss whether this could be added to Wikia instead. However, I suggest you first think about whether the content can be rewritten to be more suitable for either an encyclopedia or a textbook and then see if either of those communities want it. Angela.

Admin Question

On the WikiNarnia site, I noticed a new option at the top right where it says my username, "my talk", "my preferences", etc. At this location it says "try new skin". Does this only work for WikiNarnia? And is it only because I am an admin of WikiNarnia? It also seems to be a "wikia" thing in general. Let me know! Thanks! Wolfdog 23:49, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

It will eventually work for all users on all Wikia sites, but it's being rolled out to the smaller ones first. Please see Wikiasite:Inside:New skin for more information. Angela. 00:11, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Name changing on Wikia

Hi, Angela, is it possible to change your username on wikia? Because I'm called "Ham Solo" and I think that's idiotic. I only made it for Wookieepedia, but now I use that annoying name on every wikia. To make things EVEN worse, I can't check the userlist because the site is being edited so I can't go on the site. But I'm just asking if it's possible to changed usernames on Wikia. --Danny Phantom 03:09, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I've replied on Wikia. Angela. 08:53, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

"Misplaced Pages is not a dictionary" rule interpretation

Could you please tell me, according to this rule, should be treated as vandalism or correct actions, such edits, like removing the pronunciation information from articles like water, trolleybus, communism, Jimmy Wales etc.? In the other words: are such information (pronunciation of the words) welcomed in Misplaced Pages or it is more suitable for Wiktionary? With Respect. Asker-Asker 08:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I'd call it misguided, rather than vandalism. Pronunciation is commonly included Misplaced Pages in line with the manual of style. That doesn't violate the "not a dictionary" rule. Angela. 15:09, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Incubator

Hello! I was interested in the Ancient Greek wikipedia, so I worked on Incubator for that new wikipedia. When I saw Category Deleteme (600 pages!) and when I saw that the sysops aren't active, I made a request at Incubator:Administrators for helping. There is a text: "Nominations usually remain for seven days, for votes and comments. Admin status will be granted by a majority of at least 75% and a minimum of 4 support votes.", but there isn't any reaction. Someone said me I would ask an incubator bureaucrat for adminship, when nobody has voted, so here I am. What do you think? SPQRobin 16:17, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Ok, thank you for voting on me, but how can I get 4 votes? There isn't a community or something. SPQRobin 15:29, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
See Incubator:I:AN#Admin policy. Angela. 15:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, that seems much better. SPQRobin 15:47, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Northern Sami Misplaced Pages bureaucrats

After you suggested se.wikipedia should vote on which users should be bureaucrats there so was done. Skuolfi, Yupik and Trondtr agreed to be bureaucrats . All votes was for the three candidates. This is a good long time since now, but no one has done anything more about it. Could you make se:user:Skuolfi, se:user:Yupik and se:user:Trondtr bureaucrats? --Jorunn 23:30, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I've done this. Angela. 00:03, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

AfD

I thought you'd like to know that once again the article about you has been nommed at AfD. Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Angela Beesley (4th nomination) - even though I know this has been nommed more than four times. (I didn't nominate it, I just tried to cleanup the header tags, which were absent when I came across it.) LaughingVulcan 05:09, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

I'd seen, but thanks for pointing it out anyway. I don't see any advantage in me commenting on it. Angela.

Wikimedia's 990

I wrote a bit about this link I added on the Wikimedia discussion page, it's toward the bottom. Myself and I think at least one other person were unable to upload the .pdf file. While I am new, I have been able to upload and place image files. But the technical problems I encountered here were beyond me, but it seems simple enough to accomplish the goal here. That being, a link to Wikimedia's most recently released IRS form 990 on the Wikimedia page. This form 990 is material as we accountants say. This is perhaps an unconventional way to fix the problem, but please can we fix it? I pulled my copy from GuideStar without having to pay for it. And thank you for looking at this. Nanabozho 08:33, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps you should contact the foundation about why they don't have an official copy on their site. Unless they do, it doesn't make sense to link to copies of it. A blog called "I hate Misplaced Pages" isn't a reliable source for this and PDFs can not be uploaded to Misplaced Pages. Angela. 09:38, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
It is my hope that one day it will be a reliable source. I emailed Wikimedia as you suggested, and will see where that path leads? Well, off to the next edit, and Thank You, Angela Nanabozho 08:33, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Usurpation Request

Hi Angela! I placed an usurpation request on June 11. It has been over 7 days since I filed the request and was curious when the other username would be usurped. Thanks! --myselfalso 02:04, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't think usurpations should be made until single login happens. It's only likely to cause conflict with users on other wikis using that name. I suggest you ask another bureaucrat if you're really keen to get this name immediately. Angela. 09:38, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Lizzie Borden edits

I have to complain about your edits to the Lizzie Borden page. Your photos are incorrect, and not Emma or Lizzie. I have changed the page back to its correct factual and photographic settings. I am a Lizzie Borden scholar, editor of The Hatchet: Journal of LIzzie Borden Studies, moderator of The Lizzie Borden Society Forum, webmaster of LizzieAndrewBorden.com, and blogger of MondoLizzie.com. I know of which I speak. Please do not continue to post false facts and images on this page. Dr. Stefani Koorey

I've never edited that page nor uploaded any images related to that person. Please click the 'history' tab on the article to find out who the contributors are. Angela. 20:36, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Then how . . . .

I clicked on history, then clicked on talk, then clicked on MY TALK PAGE and it went to you. That is why I posted to your talk page. I don't understand how you are linked to Tualha.

I left Tualha a welcome message in 2003, so my name is linked from the top of Tualha's talk page. I expect you clicked that link instead of the edit link. You can sign your comments using ~~~~. Angela. 20:46, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
thank you for the info. It was extremely confusing. I apologize for the intrusion. You were great to respond so quickly. :-), Stefani

Moving badly written and unsourced Anthony Chidiac Article back into MainSpace, completely revised and now with sources and great writing!

Dear Angela,

My travels led to your userspace, and I'd appreciate your opinion on such.

Would you please be able to review my currently adopted piece on Anthony Chidiac for consideration of moving into mainspace?

It was annoying that this article was removed by a college kid and guys that live on the other side of the planet, but I understood why. The debate was heated and involved too many hothead fellas, and I read the initial article and thought it was a load of trash too, but I have spent some time on it and I think I've got it ready for moving into mainspace, and want your impartial opinion on such.

I believe that: 1) with the work I have done to provide factual pieces of information to support this biography, and 2) with the rumour of Chidiac being shortly announced as playing a pivotal part of the Billion Dollar University Hill Development in Bundoora, creating worldwide attention.

The article can be moved our of my userspace with confidence!

In the past, I also successfully picked John Brumby as being the new Premier of Victoria, Australia and noted such in other admins pages, and do have the inside track on news pertaining to major technology developments here in australia with encyclopedic notability, so based on such and the promise that I will progress this article as well as some other key players in this major announcement, I hope you find my work of a quality that meets your exacting standards. Thanking you in advance for your positivity and assistance in getting my first article in wikipedia published. My faith of such is low and I want to edit 50,000 more, but I cant seem to get one there yet :) --T3Smile 17:40, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Rumours aren't enough to make him notable. After reading the last deletion discussion, I don't see what has changed, but if you think something has, you could list it for Deletion review. Angela. 18:47, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Arduin Advertisements?

Hi. I noticed that you had responded to an issue on the Arduin page. I was browsing said page, and there are three or four instances of the following language: "NOTE: Reprints of the Arduin Treasure Pack are available through Emperor's Choice Games and Miniatures."

Is this ok? Does Misplaced Pages have a policy on advertising (which is what it appears to me to be).

If you could reply on my talk page, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your help. Oglahai 01:52, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Photos and photo permissions

Hello, Angela. Can you possibly tell me how long it takes to hear back from the Communications Committee regarding image permissions? I sent four sets of letters to you all. Thank you for some beautiful photos of Minneapolis by the way. Saint Anthony Falls and some of the mills are among my favorites. -Susanlesch 07:16, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Hello, Angela. Thank you for writing back. Can you tell me how long replies usually take? Good idea, at your suggestion, I checked my inbox, trash, and junk folders for sender from wikimedia.org and found nothing there except admin mail from when I joined. No, these are not Wired photos. That must be someone else. -Susanlesch 00:19, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • OK. I guess they were lost in transit. I sent them to "Once you have received a written/email confirmation that permission has been given, you should forward that written/email confirmation to the Wikimedia Communications committee at the e-mail address "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org" (an OTRS address), where it will be securely archived." per Misplaced Pages:Requesting copyright permission. Really sorry to bother you with this, Angela. I appreciate your effort to help. I will figure out a next step on my own. Best wishes. -Susanlesch 03:55, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Just to follow up. Still no reply from the Communications Committee regarding these four photos. I am sorry but your suggestion regarding how I manage my talk page will probably not result in any change there--people are all different. At least you replied for which I thank you. -Susanlesch 13:36, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Copying this from User talk:UninvitedCompany and User talk:Michael Snow:
Hello. I sent a garden variety "Once you have received a written/email confirmation that permission has been given, you should forward that written/email confirmation to the Wikimedia Communications committee at the e-mail address "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org" (an OTRS address), where it will be securely archived." per Misplaced Pages:Requesting copyright permission. I received this so I sent the permissions for it and three other photos. They are in non-standard format but I don't want to bug the subjects with any more permssions mail unless absolutely necessary. My question is how long does it take to receive a reply? Thanks. -Susanlesch 14:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
As I said before, replies are not usually sent since this is an archive of permissions. I can't check whether this email was even received without knowing your email address and nothing shows up in a search for your username or for the "Proof for a photo" subject line you said you used. Perhaps you should assume it has not been received. Angela. 21:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Do you remember the time...

When you created several accounts for me (all named "Zyxoas") on the st and en Wikitionaries as well as the st Misplaced Pages?? Well, it should be in your talk page archives somewhere.

I have one last favour to ask of you: is it possible for you to please edit the details of my st Wikitionary account to change my email address? I have forgotten the temporary password you created and I have also forgotten the password of my old email account (which has probably already been closed due to lack of activity anyway). I could email you the specific details if you wish?

Zyxoas 09:55, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

The password was set by the wiki and sent to you automatically by email. I never saw it, so I'm not able to make any changes to your account. Angela. 12:18, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I understand that you can do nothing about the passwords (btw, iirc, I think that you actually sent me emails with my provisional passwords after creating the accounts, but I can't remember if the emails were from you personally or just generated by you with the "email new password" system), what I need to know is whether there is some way that you or somebody else could change the email address for me (after I tell them the old email address and your talk page archives hopefully confirm my story) so I can access the account again??

Why Prolog become programming language

Dear Angela,

It is not easy to be autor of some unrecognized theorem even if the “unrecognized theorem” is relevant end important and hardly used within the field.

My story is simple: work + work + work.

The reserved result is published years ago.

Closure of Volapük Misplaced Pages

Dear Angela,

I address you to ask for your intervention in a delicate subject. As you may know, there is a proposal to close the Volapük Misplaced Pages. This wiki recently surpassed 100K articles and therefore its presence was noticeable.

It happens that this voting is based not upon the wiki itself, its lack of active users (they do exist), its lack of contents (it does have contents) but on a war of opinions. As I could perceive, all this started because users at German Misplaced Pages didn't like interwikis to Volapük Misplaced Pages. They discriminate Volapük as an obscure language and therefore shouldn't be visible to German users. So, as they can't choose what interwikis to put on articles (a bot will eventually put them back), they decided that closing vowiki was the only chance they had to remove the interwikis from their articles. In my opinion, destroying other people's work just because you don't want some interwiki on your pages looks to me at least childish. And I thought interwikis were exactly to make other projects' existence known to users. Why ban an interwiki?

Another matter under discussion is that 'article creation with bots is evil'. All users against article creation with bots are voting in favor of closing the vowiki. It's true that vowiki unfortunately has most of its articles created by a bot (mainly cities in USA, France, etc.). But this has become the main issue of the voting: people are voting whether it's acceptable to use bots to create stubs or not, not closing vowik. In this matter, I don't even think closing a project for this reason is acceptable. One could just eventually delete the articles in this situation and let the project in a healthier state. Why close a project that has the means to advance but just because some other wikis' users are against some of the policies used in vowiki? There are bots creating articles in this fashion in many other wikis: Portuguese (my own native language) is doing it right now, Lombard has done it already, booming their article count. Why is Volapük any different? I'm afraid that, if Volapük Misplaced Pages is closed for this reason, a precedent will be opened and the supporters of this closure will advance to close other smaller wikis (as it seems to be their will).

I would like to reassure you by saying that at this moment, no articles are being created by a bot. Moreover, many of the 1000 top articles are being made by human users. Volapük was the first artificial language to have impact in human society. It had a thriving time in the 19th century but know it's hardly known to most people. Although there are just a few speakers worldwide nowadays (enwiki mentions around 30 but without citing a source; the yahoo mailing list volapuk although has nearly 200 members), the language still lives and the project has contributors.

As this voting can only end up in keeping the vowiki or closing it, without any other choice, I would like to ask you to intervene. Closing the project is not necessary. It would be the last of the remedies. If one thinks something should be done about it, why not just solve the interwiki problem by allowing projects to reject interwikis to other projects (if this is acceptable), and why not eventually delete bot created stubs to world cities, reducing the article count drasticaly?

I have my conscience clean: I adhered recently to the Volapük Misplaced Pages project. The bot created articles were already there and many were being added by another user and still I continued working on it. Whether it may be questionable if that user acted correctly with the creation of these stubs by a bot, it's no reason to close a project for good.

Please I am trying to tell you something

You blocked me forever from all Wikia and deleted my usernames and talk pages. I am not trying to spam nor threaten nor harm anything. I only wanted to talk to Dantman. Assaulthead is not the criminal and he only wants to talk to Dantman.(TougHHead 01:29, 5 November 2007 (UTC))
