Introduction

The introduction to this article is not sufficient. It should be at least two sentences and needs to cover Rivera's current pursuit. Erechtheus 07:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Ron ShitHead is officially out as Bears defensive coordinator. It is official. ShadowJester, stop reverting the changes.

According to ESPN, The Bears are considering letting him go. Unless there has been some announcement, I don't think it's official. I don't have the ESPN Channel, but Yahoo Sports and ChicagoBears.com have not yet reported Rivera's leave. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  21:11, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

ESPN is often very slow on reporting the news. It's been reported by numerous media outlets, including Fox Sports. You should go check it out before repeatedly reverting changes. Enigmaman 21:17, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Very well, sorry for the confusion. Please remember to post sources in the future when dealing with breaking news. See WP:V and WP:Cite. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  21:34, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Ummm, what? I did post the source (I posted the foxsports.com article) and you deleted it. Twice. Also, ESPN reported this at 3:30 PM Eastern. That's where I first learned about it. Enigmaman 21:41, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I don;t see any sources in the History Section. But oh well, it was my fault. sorry --21:54, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Is

To my ear, the article begins a bit oddly, by saying that Rivera "is" the first American of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent to play in the NFL. Since he's no longer playing in the NFL, "was" would be the natural choice in English. We're talking about a historical fact—about an event that has already occurred. It is no longer occurring. Accordingly, I made the change (among others) to "is", but Marine 69-71 quickly changed it back (saying, puzzlingly, that "was" implied that Rivera was dead!). I certainly don't feel strongly about it, but I think "is" is the best choice. After all, we'd never say that Bill Clinton "is" the 42nd President. He "was" the 42nd President. And the use of "was" doesn't imply that anyone has died.GreenGourd 02:24, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

  • GreenGourd, damn I hate to admit it but, you "are" right and I "was" wrong in reverting. I thought about it and I told myself: "Tony, you do not make any sense, what the hell were you thinking?" I mean Rivera was the first person of Puerto Rican descent in the NFL, but there have been others. Go ahead and revert me, it was my mistake and I would be honored if you did so. Tony the Marine 03:15, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

This is incorrect unless you are talking about the first person of Puerto Rican AND Mexican descent to play in the NFL, there were several Mexican-Americans who played prior to Rivera including Max Montoya, Jim Plunkett and Anthony Munoz —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.54.183.222 (talk) 22:03, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Head coaching of Panthers

"Over the first 34 games of his coaching career, he was known for exceptionally conservative decision making which led to a 2-14 record in games decided by less than a touchdown. With Carolina opening the 2013 season 0-2, reports circled that the front office was already performing background checks on new potential head coach candidates. Facing a 4th and 1 from the two yard line in the first quarter against the also 0-2 New York Giants in week three, Rivera went for the touchdown instead of a field goal. A Mike Tolbert run found the end zone, Carolina ended up winning the game 38-0. It has been said that the reason for the play call was that Rivera actually thought it was first down.

Over the next five games, the Panthers went for a first down five times in situations where conventional strategy called for a field goal attempt. They converted on four of them and ended each of those drives with touchdowns, all in wins. The lone failure was against the Cardinals when Brandon LaFell dropped a wide open pass across the middle from Cam Newton that would have resulted in a sure touchdown as well."

This material is questionable. I think the same guy who added it also said "All hail Riverboat Ron", something about shedding conservative chains like Django, and referred to Brandon LaFell as Brandon Lafail.

Ron Rivera as Redskins head coach?
