Seth C. Rich was an American employee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) who was murdered on July 10, 2016. He was 27 years old.
Early life, education, and employment
Seth Conrad Rich was born on January 3, 1989, to parents Joel and Mary Rich. He had an older brother named Aaron. He was a native of Omaha, Nebraska, student at the Friedel Jewish Academy, and a graduate of Omaha Central High School. After high school, he majored in history and political science at Creighton University, from which he graduated in 2011.
While a student at Creighton, he worked with the US Census Bureau as well as the Nebraska Democratic Party, interning for Senator Ben Nelson. After graduating in 2011, Rich obtained employment by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner (a polling company) and relocated to Washington, DC. In Washington DC, Rich found employment with the Democratic National Committee, where he developed a computer program that let people find their polling places by entering their names. There in Washington DC, while speaking on his cell phone with his girl friend, Kelsey, he was gunned down.
As of July 2016, Rich was Deputy Director of "Data-for-Voter Protection/Expansion" at the DNC, having worked at the DNC for two years. He was developing a computer application for voters to locate polling stations.
Murder and aftermath
Rich was shot twice in the back near his home in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on July 10, 2016. He was found conscious but later died in the hospital. Police suggested Rich may have been killed in an attempted robbery; none of his belongings were taken. A standard reward of $25,000 was offered from the police for information about the death.
Following up on the reward offered by the police, WikiLeaks announced a reward of an additional $20,000 for information leading to a conviction for the murder. After receiving the news of WikiLeaks' bounty, the victim's father, Joel Rich, said "I hope the additional money helps find out who did this." He also said WikiLeaks was "playing a game". Wikileaks issued a statement neither confirming nor denying an association with Rich.
Hillary Clinton spoke of Rich's murder during a speech advocating expansion of gun control regulation. Said Clinton, "Just this past Sunday, a young man, Seth Rich, who worked for the Democratic National Committee to expand voting rights, was shot and killed in his neighborhood in Washington. He was just 27 years old." She added: "Surely we can agree that weapons of war have no place on the streets of America."
