The People's Republic of Donetsk (Template:Lang-ru, Donetskaya narodnaya respublika) is the name for a breakaway administration declared on April 7, 2014, that is currently occupying the Regional Administration Building in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. The People's Republic leaders announced that a referendum on whether Donetsk Oblast should "join the Russian Federation" would take place "no later than ." Additionally, the group's leaders have appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to send Russian military to the region. The People's Republic has no been recognized by any other state.
History
On Sunday, April 6, 2014 the day before the People's Republic was declared, pro-Russian protesters stormed and occupied the empty Donetsk Oblast Administration (RSA) building, the headquarters of the local regional government that had stayed loyal to Kiev. Similar attempts to seize the RSA building have been occurring since pro-Russian protests began in the Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine in the wake of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. Pro-Russian protesters previously occupied the Donetsk RSA from March 1 to March 6, before being ousted by the Security Service of Ukraine.
