Deleted file

That png version of that file File:Median and Average Sales Prices of New Homes Sold in United States 1963-2008 annual.png is currently being used in serveral articles. I don't know how to convert the graph to svg so I decided to upload a pdf version of that png for those who wish to be able to scale the image.Smallman12q (talk) 12:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Incarceration

Thanks for creating File:Incarceration rate of inmates incarcerated under state and federal jurisdiction per 100,000 population 1925-2008.png. But shouldn't the red line be labelled "Average", rather than "Incarceration rate" (which is unclear, since all three lines are incarceration rates).

Also, if you are putting it in public domain, you should consider transferring it to Commons so that other versions of Misplaced Pages can use it as well. rʨanaɢ /_contribs 18:21, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Mistake-The Bureau of Justice Statistics confused Imprisonment rate with Incarceration rate

• Imprisonment rate- the number of prisoners sentenced to more than 1 year under state or federal jurisdiction per 100,000 U.S. residents. see page 16
• Incarceration rate-the total number of inmates held in custody of state or federal prisons or local jails per 100,000 U.S. residents.see page 16

I believe I have made a mistake based on a mistake by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. What I've found is that they've done a terribly sloppy job at their site Key Facts at a Glance-Incarceration Rate, 1980-2007. It turns out that its actually the Imprisonment rate. On the bureaus site at

• Key Facts at a Glance, it calls it "Incarceration rate, 1980-2007".
• The graph of the above, while the graph title is imprisonment rate, the description above reads as "After sharp increases in the 1980s and 1990s, the incarceration rate has recently grown at a slower pace." It does however below say "

Note: Number of sentenced prisoners under state and federal jurisdiction per 100,000, 1980-2008. "

• Description of incarceration rates trend chart, oddly, while the title is misnamed, it states "Line chart of the number of persons imprisonment in prison per 100,000 population from 1980 to 2008.

For imprisonment rate, the population per 100,000 began at 139 in 1980 and increased to a high of 506 in 2007 then it decreased to 504 in 2008."

• Key Facts Corrections, it lists "Imprisonment rate:After sharp increases in the 1980s and 1990s, the incarceration rate has recently grown at a slower pace."
• Spreadsheet/CSV, It lists it as: ""Number of sentenced prisoners under State and Federal jurisdiction per 100,000, 1980-2008","Imprisonment population per 100,000"

It appears that someone confused imprisonment rate with incarceration rate over at the Bureau of Justice Statistics. I'll relabel the chart today or tmrw to "imprisonment rate" rather than "incarceration rate."

They do respond to emails. I contacted BJS about something a long time ago, but I don't remember what it was.

They have changed the web address locations of much of the stuff on their site. I guess they went to a different content management system.

Stats and charts are such a minefield. I started this Commons page and category awhile back hoping to help things along:

I figured out BJS separated prison and jail info and stats awhile back, but it is definitely confusing to most people. Because prison and jail are synonymous to many people. Especially outside the USA. I recently figured out where they now catalog some of their main yearly info. This may help:

I will put up the incarceration graphs for CSD as they are actually imprisonment rates. Thanks for creating the graph. I uploaded a GIF version to the Commons: File:Incarceration Rate in the United States 1985,1990-2008.gif. I used the freeware IrfanView to resize it to 600 pixels wide. It is legible at that size. I saved it in the GIF format since it is a low-color image, and so it does not need PNG or JPG. Plus GIF uses fewer kilobytes for the same size graph. Uploading to the Commons is as easy as uploading to Misplaced Pages. Images on the Commons are seen by wikipedians from hundreds of other-language Wikipedias. They can use the graph directly on their wikipedia, or use it to create a graph in their native language. --Timeshifter (talk) 07:31, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

There is a problem with the chart. There is a steep jump in the graph line from 1985 to 1990. It is possible to get the prison and jail numbers for 1985 to 1990 from here:

Pick USA in the dropdown menu, and pick the year(s).

(unindent) Yeah, they screw up a lot of things. ;)

The numbers are a mixture of midyear totals (jails) combined with end of year totals (prisons). The census numbers for each year can be midyear or end of year. I wouldn't worry about it. I suggest taking whatever can be easily found at the US census site, and linked to. That way people can at least understand all the sources. If others want to create more charts using different choices, then more power to them.

I wish there were a free, simple graph maker where I could just paste in a column of yearly U.S. resident populations, and a column of yearly inmate totals, and out pops a graph of incarceration rates. But then that would be too simple. :)

I never had the patience to study the free software such as OpenOffice, Inkscape, etc. to do charts. I tried a few primitive online chart makers, and posted the results to the Commons, but they aren't that great. So thank you for your charts!

By the way, I use the freeware NoteTab Light. It allows one to copy and paste columns (blocks) of text of any width.

NoteTab: Modify menu, block, cut/copy/paste/delete.

In any part of a table of numbers, years, etc.. I can copy the years column from these tables:

Well I just tried to calculate 1986-1989 and I got some results...they seem a bit off... What I do is take the (jail + prison)/(population/100,000) For 1986, I'm getting 332.79

The numbers look right to me. Mandatory-minimum sentences were being implemented more and more in the late 1980s. See New York Times article:

I suggest going back to 1980 since the numbers are solid going back that far. This makes for good chart combinations:

Correctional Populations

I suggest putting the right-side labels in the order of the lines from top to bottom. I frequently have difficulty connecting the colors in such graph charts with the colors on the right.

Also, I suggest uploading this great chart to the Commons. It would be categorized here:

GIF scaling has been recently fixed on all Wikimedia sites, and so GIF images are OK to use if you want. GIF is great for such low-color charts with less than 256 colors. GIF scales using fewer kilobytes than PNG charts on Wikimedia. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:52, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Jacques Maritain and Atheism

I responded to your concern about merging the three atheism (pseudo atheism, real atheism, absolute atheism) into Jacques Maritain, but since there are three articles, the response may be lost. I agree that creating an article for The Range of Reason would be appropriate/acceptable instead of the merge, but I do not think that the three concepts are of enough substance or notability to remain as three distinct articles. Also, I am concerned about one man's idea of what is a real atheist being the sole content on that page, since the term (as well as perhaps the other two atheist terms) are probably used often in informal conversation to mean something entirely different. I do understand your concern that Jacque's perspective is the only one listed for these terms, however you are more than welcome to add other perspectives given that you reference the sources. I do not believe that merging the three stubs into jacques maritain is a proper solution as that article is a description of jacques maritain and not his work. I do admit that leaving the three as separate stubs is rather sloppy and that they would do best in an article for The Range of Reason. If you'd like, I'd suggest that you create an article for The Range of Reason, and merge them there. Given the heavy nature of the range of reason...I'm not really in the zone to create an article for such a philosophical read right now, though I will create it if you don't=P. I highly doubt I will write the article because I have a list of books to read and that work does not seem interesting enough to give it priority. I will probably end up expand at least one of those atheism articles because one person having the de facto perspective on real atheism (which most people would read as simply atheism) is, again, worrisome. Its rather inefficient and a pain to have to filter out commas as they can be in the article. What I'd suggest is you use another character as listed in Misplaced Pages:Naming_conventions_(technical_restrictions). I'd suggest using either < or > rather than the comma separators...it'll make it a lot easier to code.=DSmallman12q (talk) 22:53, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Sure thing, will have a fiddle with the dump process in the next day or two and cull duplicates. For the format, f you're a formal programmer, I can work to a grammar specified in anything from YACC to XSDL. For now, I'll iuse > as an inner-delimiter on lists, < as a list separator and a carriage return as a line break. As we're using only proscribed characters as delimiters, I'll not 'quote' list entries (ie with ]. This gives us

Ye the quotes also have to go...I have to see whether it should/shouldn't have a "_" replacer for spaces. As for the list, it should go titles in "<"|red link|target articles in "<" . So rather than using comma delimited, we'll use "<" delimited.I don't believe that I'll need anything complicated like xml...=P I believe this would be the easiest and fewest lines of code for me. As for offering three lists, I'd refer to them as "anchors". For now the current anchor would be the red links and the referring article, and target article change around the red link. Once I finish, it would be fairly easy to offer both the reffering article, and target article as anchors...though it would require 2 more lists.

When a the red link is either relinked, or a redirect is made, that particular line will be removed from the "red link list" and moved to another "completed" list with the option to add a comment. When a red link is skipped, it'll add a "|" + skip counter to the list. This way we can see which are most skipped. (or simply do nothing). When a red link is marked "expert", it'll add "|" + expert.

When the suggestions are wrong for a red link, that would line would be moved to a "wrong" list and a comment as to why its wrong would be recorded.

I should have a beta ready for you today...the whole thing should be under 1000 lines of code, so not too bad.Smallman12q (talk) 13:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Here's a screenshot. So what I need now is a dump in the format titles in "<"|red link|target articles in "<" . Also, I'd prefer if you didn't fill in the spaces with "_" for the article names. It also checks for permission to use at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Red Link Recovery/Tool/Allowed users. It's fairly inefficient, using about 15mb of ram in vista, and is about 200kb total(including 115kb for dotnetwiki dll), but I believe that all modern windows machines should be able to run it. It's written in vb.net 2.0 so I could also offer a port to mono. After you provide the dumb in the above format...it'll be basically some last minute debugging and then its good to go. This should make it a lot easier for those in Red Link Recovery project. After I get it running, I'll probably port it to extjs and make it javascript based so you can work from the web browser...but that'll be in the future=D.Smallman12q (talk) 19:01, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Um...I didn't edit it this week...see the contribution history., though I did make a comment on the talkpage. I didn't realize that the talk page is on probation...I don't really understand what the point of this template is.
