The Estonia was a passenger ship. In September 28 1994 it sank during a storm in the Baltic sea, killing 852 passengers and crew. The investigation of the accident came to the conclusion that a combination of bad seamanship, technical deficiencies and foul weather caused the disaster.
The shipwreck caused a collective trauma within Swedish society, the repercussions reaching at least to 2001, as speculation and diving at the wreck continues.
Numerous conspiracy theories have been spawned around the sinking of the Estonia.
