I am ashamed to say that I only just noticed your departure. Thank you for the numerous improvements you have made to Misplaced Pages over the years. We've worked together infrequently but productively, to the extent that I was once accused of being your sock puppet. We will especially miss your willingness to point out deficiencies in the WMF whilst others meekly admire the emperor's new clothes.

I remain unblocked merely because I have been more cowardly than you in submitting to Misplaced Pages's obsession with political correctness. I would certainly never dare to suggest that ] actually exists. I have learnt from the punishment administered to you, and will maintain my silence.
Chris - thank you very much for removing the tag, and for your response to my comments. I completely appreciate that pointing fingers at other articles is not a valid argument, but it is bloody frustrating to spend so much time attempting to be so careful, only to witness utter shoddiness going unnoticed. Thank you very much for your assistance. Much appreciated.{{unsigned|Vietnamvat}}

I will understand if you never wish to see another Wikipedian again, but I sincerely hope that you are able to return when the time is right. Thank you once more, and I wish you all the best with whatever fills your newfound free time. ] (]) 13:05, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

:For future reference I feel it’s important to mention this section was heavily refactored in edit. Also: Chris Troutman is ''not'' blocked from his talk page; he simply doesn’t seem to care. We shouldn’t censor non-troll edits from people’s talk pages because we ''think'' they might be offended by them. ] (]) 12:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
Hello Chris,
::{{replyto|Dronebogus}} when an editor is blocked or banned site wide, they should only use their talk page for discussing an unblock. This can include reasonable discussion about the behaviour to help the editor understand why they were blocked and how they need to change, but there's very little room for arguing your behaviour was okay and especially not if it's not in the context of requesting an unblock. Some venting is generally ignored soon after a block provided it doesn't cross too far over the ] line but that's about as far as it goes. Okay they are also allowed simple technical maintenance e.g. removing any content they are allowed to remove, setting up or modifying auto archiving and perhaps to make other such simple requests without requesting an unblock. So while Chris troutman could have removed those comments if they wanted to, responding to them in anything more but a perfunctory manner likely would have lead to them losing talk page access. So ] was correct that they could not have really responded to that discussion. I make no comment on whether this means they should have been removed. ] (]) 14:48, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
I was wondering what would constitute a reliable source in the context of an independent, yet highly notable author? The sources used for the Sean Carswell article are from the City of Ventura, literary journals that featured Carswell, and other independent publications that spoke about Carswell's achievements and activities. I reviewed all the materials pertaining to this on wiki, but am at a loss as to how an independent minded author cuts the mustard with notability. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
] (]) 21:01, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Untruc1981}} Your primary task here is to meet notability criteria. In this case you have ] and ]. Carswell isn't looking like he can pass author criteria so your pitch is for general notability.
:Your secondary problem is that you have a kludge of lousy sources among a handful of good sources like '''' and ''''. I would recommend cutting all the other nonsense and add other journalistic sources like '''' and ''''. Even if you cut the article down to an infobox and three sentences, you might meet notability criteria. Once you get a draft accepted you can add other material from there (so long as you don't tempt deletion). In general, you want to cite sources and mention awards that themselves are notable (eg, have an article about them). Some random website doesn't inspire confidence while trash tabloid ] might. Even with four newspapers I'm still not sure this article passes, but the clearer you make it for a reviewer the better chance you'll have. Also, if there have been significant reviews of his books in academic journals, you could develop a sentence or two summarizing those reviews and then cite those reviews. It would go a long way to establishing notability. I hope that helps. <span class="nowrap" style="font-family:copperplate gothic light;">] (])</span> 21:48, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Chris Troutman,

I am in the midst of submitting my article for a re-review, as I have made the necessary changes and have added multiple reliable resources from the Windsor Star Newspaper. Before submitting my article for revision, I was wondering if you could have a look at it. I did speak with multiple individuals from the help channel including Huon, Salvidrim, and Dragonfly6-7, in regards to my resources and they have confirmed that these are reliable.

Thanks Chris!
:{{replyto|Alphahuynh}} I see you've made many improvements, while also introducing other problems. Long story short, I think you made the case for notability and when you nominate this it should be accepted.
:To improve the article I have a couple recommendations: rewrite the lead paragraph and "introduction" section per ], ], and ]. The lead is a summary, not a preface. After that you can have a background section but it is not the true start of the article. Also, you have a pile of ] and it obscures your references. I recommend using citation templates like {{tl|Cite news}} to make plain which of your references are from '']'', which is your selling point for AfC.
:You don't have to make those changes but I think it would make acceptance easier. Submit the draft when you like. <span class="nowrap" style="font-family:copperplate gothic light;">] (])</span> 22:48, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello Chris Troutman,

Thank you for your comments on the article, Pratch & Company, that I submitted on August 7. I understand your criticism of using too many of Dr. Pratch's own articles as references. One of the comments says to take them all out and resubmit the article. I have two questions: Isn't it appropriate to link to Dr. Pratch's research when making a statement regarding that research, specifically when stating that the research was carried out? Also, is there anything else in the article that needs revision before I resubmit it?

Thank you for any advice you can offer me.

<!-- Start of message -->
Dear Chris, I have removed all the wording that may be considered non-neutral. Considering the sources, they are all 3rd party and totally independent. None of the articles was done because it was payed for by the artist. As I mentioned, I even deleted the "daily mail" as considered it not trustworthy enough for wikipedia. But Fjords Magazine and Visual Language are both respected art magazines and totally 3-rd party. The only external links that are connected to the painter are the links to his website and portfolio on the web. All of the other external links are 3rd party. Later the information about the work sold from Phillips Auction will be added to the article also, but for now there is no permanent link for the lot. I cannot agree with the remark of Arthur goes shopping that "One of the artist's works being up for auction is not enough to prove their notability." It depends on the auction first of all. I hope none will doubt Phillips is one of the most respected contemporary art auctions in the world and there is no possibility to get there without being a notable artist. Just have a look on the page about the Phillips Art Auctions on the Misplaced Pages before giving this kind of remarks https://en.wikipedia.org/Phillips_(auctioneers). It is actually totally unprofessional that the highest rank experts working at the auction consider the artist notable, while reviewers of the wikipedia do not. After all the article is just about the existence of a man named Tigran Tsitoghdyan who is a painter. So can I assume that Phillips auction considers him a painter, and wikipedia does not? If there is anything else that wikipedia reviewers may consider advertising-like, i will gladly remove it, but concerning the notability I do not think there should be an issue. Don't you agree?
<!-- End of message -->] (]) 08:20, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Hamik.m}} I do not agree. Misplaced Pages has a ] as well as a host of subject-specific notability guidelines like ]. Please read those guidelines.
:I appreciate that you cut down the draft significantly. I would put the ''Daily Mail'' back in as it was your best source. Whoever told you to take it out was wrong, in my opinion. Also, ] doesn't just mandate that links are 3rd party but has long lists of what links ], ], or ]. You should read those, too. Misplaced Pages can be a complicated place with a lot of rules and although many new editors start by writing a new article, it almost always ends badly.
:It often happens that both amateurs and professionals in almost any field get upset when someone or something they think is important isn't considered notable on Misplaced Pages. We get professors that have written dozens of scholarly articles that don't meet ] and we refuse them. We get musicians that perform regularly at small venues but fail ] and we refuse them. We sometimes delete articles about non-notable journalists and those journalists write articles in their periodicals to complain about our notability criteria. Accordingly, we decline to accept an article about ]. I think it's impressive that his work was featured on those magazines. The coverage he does have is in niche publications so since I'm not an art student I have no idea if those magazines really lend any credibility. They're not '']''. I'm a ] and the periodicals I read are ''The Numismatist'' and ''Bank Note Reporter''. Both of those are only read by other hobbyists and neither has a Misplaced Pages article about it, so they won't impress general-interest Wikipedians. You have the same problem with ''Fjords Magazine'' and ''Visual Language Magazine''. Also, notability is ] so it doesn't matter if Phillips Art Auctions is notable; what they auction doesn't automatically become notable, too.
:The issue is that Tsitoghdyan doesn't yet meet our criteria; maybe someday he will. Misplaced Pages is in no rush so it's fine to wait several years for coverage to develop. You, however, are trying to get this article accepted because you have a stake in it. In any case, I'm not reviewing your draft again so I'm happy to left out of it. <span class="nowrap" style="font-family:copperplate gothic light;">] (])</span> 17:06, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

== Trolling ==
It is not necessary or appreciated to troll user talk pages with warnings about citing sources literally within minutes of fresh edits. I was searching for the most authoritative source to cite when you left your note. You are welcome to look for your own sources if you wish to do something constructive for the article. ] (]) 22:40, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Ketone16}} I don't troll; ask anyone. Adding good content without also adding a source looks just the same on my watchlist as adding unsourced content, which I summarily revert. If you have a source, feel free to revert me and add your source. In fact, I'm curious why you'd add any content at all if you're not sure which source(s) you're using to substantiate it. You can't just add what you think is right and then go searching for a ] to back it up. You find the source first and then add the content. You've been editing Misplaced Pages intermittently for a long time so I don't see why we're having this conversation. <span class="nowrap" style="font-family:copperplate gothic light;">] (])</span> 22:56, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
::There is no rule that says you find the source first and then add the content; what matters is that the source gets cited in the end. It is not appropriate to interrupt someone's work process mid-flow. I added a stub edit and was adding more information when you reverted my edits. I am not at all unsure about my source. My source was a book on Armenian history I found online, but since Armenia was not a party to the treaty, I was looking around for a better source, preferably something contemporaneous with the treaty. I could not access the book's references directly in the online preview I was viewing, so I had to search around. I stress, however, that the book is a reliable source and I was planning on citing it if I couldn't find a better source. It is my opinion that immediate summary reverts of uncontroversial material are not productive for Misplaced Pages, in addition to being rude on a personal level. Sometimes people are editing in a flow, and even those who do post unsourced material as a matter of habit are not necessarily harming Misplaced Pages. I'd rather have someone make an unsourced edit (as long as it is not dubious or non-NPOV) and then find and add a source later myself (as I frequently do) than have information never make it into less-frequently-edited articles at all. It's more valuable to Misplaced Pages (and polite) to add a challenge tag or open a discussion on the talk page than simply to revert an uncontroversial unsourced edit, particularly when the revert comes minutes after the original edit (and without considering the editor's previous history). Immediate summary reverts of uncontroversial information have a destructive effect on Misplaced Pages because they discourage editing. There are more constructive ways of ensuring the information on Misplaced Pages is reliable. And I do consider leaving warnings about citing sources on people's talk pages to be trolling, unless the person is a habitual abuser. ] (]) 23:18, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

== WikiCup 2014 August newsletter ==

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}}, a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Casliber}} is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Czar}} was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Adam Cuerden}} was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Cwmhiraeth}} won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|12george1}} is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Sturmvogel 66}}, the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Bloom6132}}, the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Matty.007}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|ThaddeusB}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|WikiRedactor}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Figureskatingfan}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Yellow Evan}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Prism}} and {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Cloudz679}} have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The ] will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the ], which the organisers plan to run next year. There is now ''']''' for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. == Joseph Janus Article ==

Hey Chris,
Thank you for taking the time to review my article. It is for my boss (Joseph Janus). I was just hoping to get a little more detail as posting on here is completely new to me. This was given to me by Joseph so I can definitely go back and check his references, but other than that how can I fix things like promotional sounding voice? Once again thank you for all the help.

Janus worked with an “in-house group of illustrators, clothing designers, graffiti artists and promotion experts that serve as an ad hoc ad team to ensure the look and feel of advertising will be anything but traditional.”(16) “‘The key to success, he notes, is to make a product that helps kids feel good about themselves.’”(17). In 1997, Advertising Age Magazine named him in “The Marketing 100".(17)

Joseph Janus’ success attracted the attention of Designer Calvin Klein himself, who personally recruited Janus to direct the advertising and marketing department. While at Calvin Klein, Janus launched various brand extensions for the brand.(6, 8,)
Music
Janus created Fearless Management to manage music artists, assemble groups and produce and write music. His first two records were on Madonna’s Maverick Records(12). Janus went on to sign singer-songwriter and humanitarian Ben Jelen to Linda Perry’s Custard records. Janus and Jelen collaborated to develop a charity titled “The Ben Jelen Foundation” to help create a greener earth. Collecting donations from brands like Altoids and Replay Jeans(22). Their charitable efforts combined will help fund green initiatives around the globe.
Fashion
Bodhi bags were picked up by retailers: Fred Segal, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s. Bodhi also spread to established retailers abroad. With the success of the women’s line, Janus expanded the Bodhi brand to include both men’s and travel collections(10). Bodhi also produced a limited edition of animal friendly bags, shared at a charity event by the North Shore Animal League America and Beth Ostrosky Stern (18). == Original Research (yet again) ==

I've just (admittedly rather belatedly) read your comments about "bickering" on the Thomas More talk page. So I came back here to remind you of how this "bickering" started. The sequence of events is as follows:

a) You accused me of trying to publish original research in the More article.

b)

c) I (politely at first) invited you to substantiate that claim or withdraw it.

d) Nearly a year later you have failed to provide a single scrap of evidence for what you say.

e) Because you can't - I haven't written a word of that article.

And yet you haven't withdrawn, let alone apologised for, your remark. In fact you've - ludicrously - tried to deny having made it. (Here are your exact words: "At no point have I accused you of publishing original research".)

Here's my message: don't pull that stuff with me. You want me to stay away from your talk page? Nothing would give me greater pleasure. You flatter yourself if you think I'd spend any longer here than I have to. I had never heard of you until you accused me of original research. But you're in for a rude awakening if you think I or anyone else is going to tolerate people making things up about them.

== Merry Christmas ==
I'm happy to leave the More stuff on the talk page (where I've addressed your nonsensical points about sources and "troublemakers" etc). But here's some advice for you personally. Don't pick a fight with someone if you're going to burst into tears when they fight back. You want to substantiate your accusation that I tried to insert original research into the More article, fine, let's hear your evidence. You want to withdraw it, fine, I'm all ears. But don't deny what you said. That's the cowards way out. From skimming through your posts, it's clear you're a tough guy in cyberspace, ready to dish out insults and (more irritatingly) patronising advice. But like all bullies, you cut and run the minute anyone stands up to you. Even behind the anonymity of a keyboard you can't summon the courage to answer a straight question.

<div style="border-style:solid; border-color:blue; background-color:AliceBlue; border-width:1px; text-align:left; padding:8px;" class="plainlinks">] ]

If no, and someone hacked into your account, fine, we'll call it quits. Otherwise, just grow a pair and stop trying to deny what you said. You obviously don't have enough honour to apologise when you make a false accusation, but don't try and pretend it didn't happen. Otherwise, you make people's blood boil, and then "bickering" happens. When it does, don't whinge about it. If you're so thin-skinned you can't bear it when someone points out you're wrong, just disconnect your modem now, because sooner or later people are going to acquaint you with the facts, and that's evidently more than you can stand. ] (]) 02:12, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

  On the Radar:  An Occasional Newsletter on Misplaced Pages's Challenges

— "Comments?" links go to OtR's own talk page, not those of the original news-item sources.
According to WashPo, WMF has tapped a South African nonprofit executive and lawyer to be its new executive director. While I've been saying for a decade that WMF has to stop hiring software- and online-services-industry people to run an NGO, and hire NGO people, this one – Maryana Iskander – is rather cagey and bureaucratic, or comes off that way in the interview.
  • First up is a belief that the WMF Universal Code of Conduct (drafted in supposed consulation with all WMF editorial communities but largely ignoring all their feedback) is the key to diversifying Misplaced Pages's editorial pool. (And as always in mainstream media, "Misplaced Pages" means en.wikipedia.org.) The entire UCC is basically a restatement of some key WP (and Commons, and Wiktionary) policies plus some WMF "vision" hand-waving. It's questionably reasonable to expect a largely redundant document, which was created for projects that lack sufficient policy development, and which has and will continue to have little impact on en.Misplaced Pages, to cause a sea change in who volunteers to edit here. That takes real-world outreach on a major scale. One would think a nonprofit CEO would already get that.
  • Next up, Iskander makes rather unclear reference to section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This content-liability shield has been much in the US news lately, as a target of the Republican Party in its feud with "big tech", especially social media sites deplatforming far-right writers for anti-democracy propaganda and misinformation about the public health crisis. Iskander is correct that WMF isn't in a danger position in this, but the article strongly implies that Iskander and WMF are keenly interested and involved. Even when prompted, Iskander does not meaningfully elaborate, and just offers an education-is-important dodge. So, we need more actual information on what WMF is doing with regard to efforts to revise section 230.
  • Moving on, Iskander says something alarming: "Misplaced Pages has seen a huge amount of increased traffic around covid-19, worked on a very productive partnership with the World Health Organization to provide additional credibility to that work." That's hard to distinguish from a statement that WHO has editorial plants who WP:OWN the relevant articles. But it's cause for concern whatever the truth is. WMF should not be "partnering" with any external body to influence the encyclopedia's content (especially not one that has taken as many credibility hits as the WHO).
  • There's something potentially interesting in here, though devils could reside in the details: "a lot of the basic access issues might technically look different , but how people understand what information is available to them – how they access it – those issues exist everywhere". What is this going to mean on a practical level? Is MOS:ACCESS going to be better-enforced? Is Simple English Misplaced Pages going to be reintegrated into the main site as alternative articles? Is the mobile version of the site going to stop dropping features? Is WP:GLAM going to turn into a bigger effort? There are a hundred ways (sensible and otherwise) this statement could be made to affect policy, funding, and the end "product" (though one suspects nothing important will change for the better unless the internal culture of WMF's organizational leadership also changes in a major way, such as by diversifying the board of directors, toward more academics and nonprofit people instead of tech-industry rich people).
In short, I have hopes that Iskander's NGO background will make for a better exec. dir. fit than that last two we've had, but right out of the gate she's saying strange, too-vague, and even troubling things. And nothing in the interview actually suggests anything like a fix for WP's editorial diversity problem, which the headline suggested was going to be the focus.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:48, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
"It is possible to detect eerie echoes of the confessional state of yore", and today's far left is recycling techniques from fun times like the Inquisition." I've been saying this for years, and the article is a good summary of how "left-wing" and "leftist" do not always align with "liberal". It's an observation too few mainstream writers have been willing to make, but the truth of it explains a great deal of disruptive PoV-pushing on Misplaced Pages. Illiberal left-wing activism is often harder to detect, and harder for the average editor to publicly resist, than far-right extremism, which we tend to recognize then delete on sight.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:51, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
An Information Research survey shows that people's editing motivation is often "their desire to change the views of society", and also that they view Misplaced Pages as a "social media site". This isn't news to us, and the material doesn't have a huge statistical sample, but I would bet real money that it will be re-confirmed by later studies. This has systemic bias, neutrality, and conflict of interest implications (also not news). What we don't really think much about it is what this means for Misplaced Pages long-term, as everyone with an agenda becomes more aware that they can try to sneakily leverage Misplaced Pages articles to boost their side of any story, especially after the Trump 2016 US presidential campaign proved that powerful results can pulled off by organized manipulation of "social media" sites (whether WP really is one or not is irrelevant if the public thinks it is).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  23:28, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey has closed; the results are here, and as disappointing as in previous years. This process is fundamentally flawed, for numerous reasons:
  • Only the top-ten proposals will get any resources devoted to them, no matter how many there are, or how urgent or important they are.
  • It's a straight-vote, canvassing-allowed, no-rationale-needed, short-term "popularity contest" – normal Wikimedian consensus-building is thwarted.
  • This setup encourages people to vote for the 10 things they want most, then vote against every other proposal even if they agree with it. Proposals cannot build support over time.
  • There's no "leveling of the playing field" between categories. Important proposals of narrower interest (e.g. to admins, or to technical people) never pass, only the lowest-common-denominator ones do – and the most-canvassed ones.
  • Too few Wikimedians even know the survey exists or when it is open, which greatly compounds the skew caused by focused canvassing – the intentional spikes actually determine the outcome.
I've drafted some suggestions for making it work better.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ⱷ҅ⱷ<  18:08, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

I would certainly never dare to suggest that neuroscience of sex differences actually exists. I have learnt from the punishment administered to you, and will maintain my silence.

I will understand if you never wish to see another Wikipedian again, but I sincerely hope that you are able to return when the time is right. Thank you once more, and I wish you all the best with whatever fills your newfound free time. Certes (talk) 13:05, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

For future reference I feel it’s important to mention this section was heavily refactored in this edit. Also: Chris Troutman is not blocked from his talk page; he simply doesn’t seem to care. We shouldn’t censor non-troll edits from people’s talk pages because we think they might be offended by them. Dronebogus (talk) 12:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
@Dronebogus: when an editor is blocked or banned site wide, they should only use their talk page for discussing an unblock. This can include reasonable discussion about the behaviour to help the editor understand why they were blocked and how they need to change, but there's very little room for arguing your behaviour was okay and especially not if it's not in the context of requesting an unblock. Some venting is generally ignored soon after a block provided it doesn't cross too far over the WP:NPA line but that's about as far as it goes. So User:Rhododendrites was correct that they could not have really responded to that discussion. I make no comment on whether this means they should have been removed. Block reason

@Just Step Sideways Could you point me (and others) to the AN(I)/AE/etc. discussion or any other place where there is a rationale and/or consensus to block this editor? TIA Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
