Benny Sela (Hebrew: בני סלע) is an Israeli serial rapist of a Mizrachi origin. Captured by police in 1999, he was convicted in 2000 of 14 counts of rape, and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment. Benny Sela's case entered the text book of Israeli social work education, as an example of severe failures in his pastural care as a teenager. Sela who came out of a disenfrenchaosed and impoverished background had witnessed as a young boy his father's dramatic suicide. Since then his emotional development was severed and there were repeated failures by various boarding schools, amongst them at the school Alonei Itzhack in whose trust he was given.
On November 24 2006, Sela escaped from police custody while being transferred to what was thought to be a court hearing but later suspected to have been fabricated as part of an inside job.
His escape launched a nationwide search for him, involving thousands of Israeli police officers.
He was captured in Nahariya on December 8, 2006, two weeks after his escape.
