Giovanni I Natoli, or Gianforte Natoli or Giovanni Forti Natoli Lanza Giambruni da Alifia (or Alifia) di Luna, son of Francesco and Margherita Lanza (from the barony of Ficarra), was baron of Sicily, of S. Bartolomeo, of Bilici, of Alburque or Alaburchia and Capuano. He was the founder of the principality of the kingdom of Sperlinga in 1597, with the granting of " Licentia Populandi cum privilegium aedificandi " from King of Sicily Philip II of Spain, and in 1626 received the official title of first Prince of Sperlinga.

Regency

The Prince Giovanni Natoli, heir of a rich and honored aristocracy french dynasty, was the sons of the count Blasco Natoli Lanza de Raccuja, senator of Messina, and Domenica Giambruni e Perna, he was a writer and collector of art and antiques.

It is very famous the posthumous latin written carved in the entrance hall of the Castle of Sperlinga made by the Prince's Castle Giovanni Natoli, the same day that he was in possession: " Quod Siculis placuit sola Sperlinga negavit " , that is written linked to the events of the Sicilian Vespers (1282) when a French garrison of Anjou barricaded himself inside the castle and withstood the siege for over a year, in memory of the heroic deeds of his ancestors.

The Prince Gianforte had two wife Maria Cottone ed Aragona and Melchiorra Orioles e Moncada mother of his son Francesco Natoli Orioles Alifia e Luna, that become the II Prince of Sperlinga 6 May 1637.

The Prince Natoli has held five positions:

  • 9 August 1600 – 15 july 1633: His Serene Highness Sovereign Prince of Sperlinga
  • Barons of S. Bartolomeo, of Bilici, of Alburchia and Capuano

All members of the family are styled Don or Donna, several male members also with the Courtesy title Prince.
