A list of favourites
Films
- Revolutionary Road: Probably the best relationship drama on screen. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet practically live and breathe the characters of Frank and April Wheeler. Why can't we make such films in India?
- Una giornata particolare: An Italian film featuring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni that deals with the relationship between two unlikely neighbours during the Second World War. A masterpiece!
- Up in the Air: Jason Reitman's modern day classic. The perfect example of film-making.
- The Dark Knight: My favourite indulgence is watching this epic by Christopher Nolan. I must have seen it over 50 times.
- No Country for Old Men: Not a huge fan of the western genre, but this one made me a believer.
- Pulp Fiction: This film changed the very idea of a motion picture. Repeat viewing is mandatory.
- Charulata: From first scene to last, this one is a poetry in motion. I consider this as Satyajit Ray's finest work.
- Seemabaddha: Another gem by Satyajit Ray. What makes it even more special is a thunderous performance by Sharmila Tagore.
- Omkara: Shakespeare would have been proud; that's all that I can say about the best Hindi film that I have seen.
- Noukadubi: Rituparno Ghosh's take on Tagore's novel of the same name is a sheer gem. One needs to let the film grow on them to realise its true intensity.
- Other equally favourites: Bicycle Thieves, Closer, Rear Window, Maqbool, Hannah and Her Sisters, Schindler's List, The Godfather, Sunset Blvd., The Lunchbox and so many other films!
Directors
- Martin Scorsese: Favourites are Taxi Driver, The Aviator, The Departed and Hugo
- Stephen Daldry: Favourites are The Hours and The Reader
- Jason Reitman: Favourites are Juno, Up in the Air and Young Adult
- Quentin Tarantino: Favourites are Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds
- Christopher Nolan: Favourites are The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception
- Satyajit Ray: Favourites are Pather Panchali, Charulata, Seemabaddha and Nayak
- Vishal Bhardwaj: Favourites are Maqbool, Omkara, Kaminey and 7 Khoon Maaf
- Mani Ratnam: Favourites are Anjali, Roja, Bombay and Dil Se..
- Shyam Benegal: Favourites are Ankur, Bhumika: The Role and Manthan
- Rituparno Ghosh: Favourites are Unishe April, Chokher Bali, Dosar and Noukadubi
- Other equally favourites: Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Ang Lee, Kathryn Bigelow, Imtiaz Ali, Aparna Sen, James Cameron, Dibakar Banerjee and James Ivory.
Actors
- Robert De Niro: Raging Bull and Taxi Driver are probably just two such instances that demonstrate that De Niro is the best. Without doubt.
- Leonardo DiCaprio: He is probably the only actor who hasn't gone wrong with even a single film choice. My personal favourites are The Aviator, Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road and The Wolf of Wall Street.
- Jack Nicholson: I can't possibly draw up a list of his best works, as it is an impossible task. However, I personally admired his work the most in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown and As Good As It Gets.
- George Clooney: His performance in Up in the Air made me a huge fan of Clooney. And then came The Descendants, which made me an even bigger fan.
- Morgan Freeman: I can watch The Shawshank Redemption a number of times, only for him. An actor having an incredible screen presence, his other best performances are in Million Dollar Baby and Invictus.
- Amitabh Bachchan: A superstar and undoubtedly India's finest actor. I would consider his performances in Silsila, Agneepath, Black and Paa to be just a few of my personal favourites.
- Naseeruddin Shah: An actor who dared to be different and in his rebellion gave us such fine films as Masoom, Sparsh and A Wednesday!.
- Irrfan: His intensity scorches the screen. Maqbool, The Namesake, Paan Singh Tomar and The Lunchbox are proof of his brilliance. I wish that more Indian filmmakers would tap into his potential.
- Ranbir Kapoor: Just a few films old, but light years beyond most of his seniors. Wake Up Sid, Rockstar and Barfi! are just stepping stones for an incredibly bright future.
- Aamir Khan: The only superstar who has a mind of his own. The best part about him is that he can slip into both a 3 Idiots and Dhobi Ghat with equal ease. And in between, he is a part of such gems as Lagaan, Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par.
- Other equally favourites: Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Brad Pitt and Christian Bale.
Actresses
- Meryl Streep: She is truly the most talented actress of all time. Although difficult to choose one film over her vast filmography, my personal favourite remains Sophie's Choice.
- Kate Winslet: The best actress of our generation, she substantially raises the bar of the film she is in. My personal favourites are Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, Revolutionary Road and The Reader.
- Annette Bening: The most underrated actress in Hollywood. Her performances in American Beauty and The Kids Are All Right proves how incredible she is.
- Maggie Smith: Adorable, brilliant and hugely likeable. Her performance in Downton Abbey goes on to prove that she is timeless.
- Jessica Chastain: If her performances in The Tree of Life and Zero Dark Thirty are anything to go by, it's only a matter of time till she becomes the biggest star in Hollywood.
- Shabana Azmi: I wouldn't call her the "Meryl Streep of India" or such, because she has an identity of her own. Undoubtedly India's finest actress, her sheer range of performances from Arth (my personal favourite) to Fire is worth a long standing ovation.
- Vidya Balan: I consider her to be the best actress in India since Azmi. After Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, I hope she continues the upward trajectory.
- Tabu: While watching Maqbool, I couldn't take my eyes off her. Her portrayal of Nimmi is the very idea of a "perfect performance". My other favourites are Astitva, Chandni Bar and The Namesake.
- Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji: While Kapoor is brilliant in Omkara, Jab We Met, Kurbaan and Heroine, Mukerji's best include Yuva, Black, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Talaash: The Answer Lies Within.
- Kajol: Though I am not particularly fond of her attraction towards melodramatic films, she is definitely the best at this game. Dushman, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, U Me Aur Hum and My Name is Khan are her best performances.
- Other equally favourites: Smita Patil, Konkona Sen Sharma, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts, Madhuri Dixit, Judi Dench and Parineeti Chopra.
