    Red reference errors

    Resolved

Can someone please fix all the red errors in the References section at Oggy and the Cockroaches? They all say "Wikilink embedded in URL title (help)". I clicked on the help link and read the section about this type of CS1 error, but can't figure out how to fix it. So I was hoping someone could please correct the six references that have this error. Thank you! --76.189.111.2 (talk) 01:16, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Fixed. —Theopolisme (talk) 01:23, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your quick help! I just looked at your edit, so now I understand how to fix it. You made it look so easy. Haha. Thanks for teaching me something new! :) --76.189.111.2 (talk) 01:26, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
That works, but the documentation at {{cite web}} suggests you use |language=French instead. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:55, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
John, I corrected it per your instructions. Can you check to see if I did it correctly? Thanks. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 06:15, 13 April 2013 (UTC) 06:30, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

I have reworked the help page. Eventually the language parameter should add language markup to the title. --  Gadget850 (Ed) 07:52, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Boggled By Citations!

I am somewhat of a wikipedia newb but have learned about archiving pages today and have fixed many citations on the animal collective page by searching archives. I have no clue how I messed up this citation number fifteen, I have looked over it many times and read pertinent help pages but cant figure it out. :'( http://en.wikipedia.org/Animal_Collective Izoanefts (talk) 04:14, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Fixed - You just named the cite incorrectly. You should have named it "veyesor post", which also applies to cite 14. So the error was caused because you gave the cite a name that didn't exist elsewhere, and didn't include a URL. Btw, I wouldn't consider you a newbie; you've been editing for a whole 9 hours! :p --76.189.111.2 (talk) 06:02, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I would. I don't know what the strict definition is, but I'm pretty sure it's more than a matter of hours.--Launchballer 08:51, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I was joking about the 9 hours, thus the ":p" (tongue sticking out) at the end of my comment. Although I assumed it was rather obvious. Haha. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 09:05, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm still so confused. I did not want to name it "veyesor post" because it is not the same post by veyesor it's an entirely~ different issue that doesn't have to do with cite 14 except that the same user veyesor was posting in the same forum in cite 14 but under a different topic. Also I was pretty brain dead when I did this late last night.. so I may not have included a url. :/ wat

I am confused by what you mean when you said "you gave the cite a name that didn't exist elsewhere"? Where else should it have existed? And can you just tell me if help desk is an okay place to come with all my little problems like this? There are quite a few citations that need fixing and I want to make it my job to do so and also not mess them up too hard. ~(;_;)~ I just wanna helppp Izoanefts (talk) 17:07, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

You can give one use of a citation a short name at the front. If you want to use it again you just use the name you gave it for other uses instead of writing it out again. See Misplaced Pages:Referencing_for_beginners#Same_reference_used_more_than_once. The help desk is the correct place. Some editors phone the Queen, Obama, and the Vatican. This desk is usually easier to get through to, responds faster, and probably will give better answers.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:27, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
:D Ty canoe I understand short names for references already, I still can't figure out exactly what I did wrong but that's ok. I will keep coming here for help, I heard the new pope is busy right now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Izoanefts (talkcontribs) 17:35, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi; as Canoe1967 says, if someone gives a reference a name, e.g., <ref name="a name">cite goes here</ref>, that reference can be cited later by simply typing <ref name="a name"/> (note the closing slash). When you renamed <ref name="Collected Animals, Post by Brian Weitz, May 12, 2006"> to <ref name="veyesor post">, a cite that consisted only of <ref name="Collected Animals, Post by Brian Weitz, May 12, 2006" /> broke, as there was no longer a reference by that name. – 29611670.x (talk) 17:40, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, now I get it. The citation that was formerly #14 was changed to #15 so there was no problem with citation #15. :D I will remember to fix that next time, and as suggested preview the page before saving my changes. Izoanefts (talk) 18:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Strange citation error

In my draft User:Toshio Yamaguchi/List of islands of the Federated States of Micronesia there is a strange citation error. I am sure that error wasn't there when I last edited the page. I guess it is because of this edit to {{Cite book}}. I've read Help:CS1 errors#parameter ignored but still don't understand what I have to do to resolve that error. It seems that the editor-last= and editor-first= parameters are no longer supported, probably since this edit to the template, although they are listed at the documentation of {{Cite book}}. What do I need to do? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 09:10, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

That citation really never worked properly. Three of the editors should have been listed followed by et al. The problem is because |editor-last= and |editor-first= are not valid parameters so were ignored, |editor-last=, |editor1-last= are synonyms as are |editor-first= and |editor1-first=

The error message is new, but the problem has been there all along. Someone updated the {{Cite book}} documentation to use last and it appears someone interpreted it literally. And since that section is supposed to be copy/paste, I can't blame them. I will look at fixing this. --  Gadget850 (Ed) 20:07, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

nxtbook pages allowed as references ?

    Hi,

I discovered today nxtbook website through this link, used as a reference in a Misplaced Pages article. I wonder if this is allowed, as it seems strange to me that full magazines could be legally available for free on the web. The article NXTbook Media didn't help me much. Thanks in advance, Freewol (talk) 11:07, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

There is no problem using the nxtbook as a reference, as long as you are not copying the text you are not infringing copyright. If you have qualms about linking to the site, you don't need to do so because it's a RL publication anyway Jimfbleak - talk to me? 18:06, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    Regarding wrong information

    Respected Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about a misconception about Taruni Sachdev.

In the above page, it has been mentioned that Taruni Sachdev died on 14th May, her birthday. This information is incorrect. Her birthday is on 2nd July,1998.

I was her bestfriend and I would like you to change the above information as soon as possible.

Thanking you, Yours faithfully, Sargam. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.236.3.70 (talk) 13:22, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Problem with ISBN numbers

I found the page Category:Pages with ISBN errors and thought I would have a go at fixing some of them. I got to the page A Message of Peace and ref 3 reports that the ISBN 978-1-84880-050-2 is incorrect. However that is what is published on it. I thought I would add the |ignore-isbn-error=true switch to the cite book template, but then decided to check the ISBN check digit. The hahnlibrary ISBN checker reports that it is correct, as does morovia.com. I am not sure what to do next, as it looks like there is a problem with the Misplaced Pages ISBN checking algorithm. Regards. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:21, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

The parameter in the citation is: | isbn=: 978-1-84880-050-2. The error results from the colon preceding the ISBN. There should be nothing but a single ISBN in |isbn=.

doh! I couldn't see it for looking. Thanks. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:53, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Misplaced Pages:Articles for creation Question

Is has been a while since I have worked with Misplaced Pages so I wanted to find out about posting it. It is under my contributions tab but the article says Misplaced Pages:Articles for creation/Zalmon Gilbert Simmons II before the Title. I was just checking to see what this means and if I need to do anything else to have it posted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ltstrickland (talkcontribs) 14:27, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

To the top of the draft, add: {{subst:submit}} - David Biddulph (talk) 14:32, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I've taken the liberty of adding a "References" section (and {{reflist}}) to the draft, as the references were not showing. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:38, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
There already is an article about Zalmon G. Simmons as well as the Simmons Bedding Company. Stop working on the draft and rather use your material to improve those two articles. There is no point in continuing to work on the draft as it will never be accepted because an article about the same subject already exists in mainspace. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:17, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I disagree. This person is notable enough to have his own page from my preliminary look of the article. {{subst:submit}} it for review. Don't be discouraged if it is denied the first time. Follow the instructions to improve the article, and re-submit it. I will back this article in the AfC discussion room. Technical 13 (talk) 16:55, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps Dodger missed the "II" in the name of the requested article. Rmhermen (talk) 17:46, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. Oh and my article is not the same. It is the son of the existing article. ltstrickland — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ltstrickland (talkcontribs) 20:13, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Image Ownership

Is there any way to retain copyright for images I post on Wiki pages?

I have a license to use certain images from a specific scientific authority. These would be essential to explain the topic of my page. I do not have authority to pass these images n to others for use on their own websites - only for publication under my name.

Is this possible, and if so how do I configure the images to ensure this?

    Cheers,

    Pete

P.S. I would like to help with Misplaced Pages. How do I apply to become an adviser/editor if it is possible to do so? I recently retired and am now self-employed with my online writing and SEO business from my Article Services and SEO Content sites. I have more time now to help giving back free what Misplaced Pages has given me over the years. Even if just in an anonymous background capacity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psnisbet (talkcontribs) 14:34, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Many people mistakenly think that licensing for Misplaced Pages is giving up the copyright. This isn't the case, however, the required license does mean that others can use the images, so the distinction may not be helpful.
There are some circumstances (mainly involving images of logos) where an image can be posted her but not used elsewhere. If you explain more about the nature of the images, we could determine whether non-free use applies.
As for helping out, you do not have to apply. You simply start editing.
See Misplaced Pages:Tutorial for one of our many intros.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
No. Apart from the very limited exceptions SPhilbrick mentions, you may not post images unless the owner of the copyright explicitly releases them under one of the acceptable licences; whichever licence they choose will still allow anybody to use the images for any purpose, commercial or not, as long as they attribute them correctly. --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    period of purple crying

How do I make a suggestion that this topic of normal crying, extended for newborns, 2 to 6 months old, be introduced as an article? Babies cry relentlessly, cannot be comforted, no apparent reason for the frequent and intense crying. It is important for new parents and all parents of newborns, especially to prevent child abuse. How do I ask for the article to be introduced and made part of Misplaced Pages? Try WP:RA--Ushau97 (talk) 16:39, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
There is actually a video with a title very similar to this that hospitals and state agencies hand out to new parents. That "may" be useful for creating your article. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 16:42, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

No, no! I'm no expert! I just want it to come to someone's attention, and the information to be on Misplaced Pages because I think it's important.... and so I can learn more and refer people to it. How do I make suggestions? (It took me an hour or so just to learn how to write you all a message... Low, low skills!) Mary Ellen Pitts24.113.222.6 (talk) 19:55, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

If you can add a few sentences to User:Canoe1967/Period of purple crying then we can add the video as a source. If anyone has the video they could expand the article from that. Are there any online sources as well? Don't worry about wrecking it in user space. We can fix it all before moving to mainspace.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:27, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I believe that I have the video on DVD. I'll have to see if I can find it and find out if there are any copyrights on it (I'm thinking there may not be as it is an educational video handed out by hospitals, but I could be wrong). If there are no concerns of copyvio, I'll rip and upload it. Technical 13 (talk) 21:59, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
It probably is copyright but may have a 'free licence'. If not you could email the publisher and see if they are willing to release it. That would save them making and distributing copies. When they update it we can just overwrite the file. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/Commons:Licensing for how to spot a free licence. If the feds made it it may be public domain. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/Template:PD-US-Gov . California, Florida, New Mexico, and possibly other states have similar PD state gov tags.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:05, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure the DVD is distributed by http://purplecrying.info/ Technical 13 (talk) 00:27, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

There is some information online from different sources. The subject is concerning the video given to parents of newborns at hospitals. The "parent" source is "shaken baby syndrome". They are very eager to get the message out. Thanks so much for working on this. Just to know about it is so very helpful to parents when the baby is screaming non-stop. To know it's normal and expected is such a comfort. Thanks! Mary Ellen Pitts24.113.222.6 (talk) 01:04, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

The article could probably go in Category:Infancy with a wikilinked sentence or 'see also' to any other articles that concern it. I added a video from an expert with a short description as a reference to User:Canoe1967/Period of purple crying. You could rephrase his description between the dots and the reference to avoid copyright violations on his description. If you find his email we may be able to use more of his description if he is willing to license it for use. He would need to email OTRS. Misplaced Pages:Donating copyrighted materials has more details. You may wish to email the oraganiztion to see if they wish to help expand the draft as well.--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:54, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Template infobox writer -- occupation parameter

I posted these questions on the Template:Infobox writer talk page yesterday. No response yet.

Is it appropriate to use an unbulleted list in the Occupation parameter? What is the reason for specifying "please don't separate entries using line breaks <br>" in the Occupation parameter? How many occupations would you expect Roger Ebert's article to display in the infobox? Thanks, in advance, for you help. --108.45.72.196 (talk) 16:52, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

I would say unbulleted list would be fine unless that is denied somewhere as well. --Canoe1967 (talk) 00:08, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
But, if a list of occupations separated by line breaks is discouraged, why would an unbulleted list be acceptable? Don't they generate the same result when you click the "Save page" button? --108.45.72.196 (talk) 04:15, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Infoboxes may know the reasons. I would think that if some like it shorter and some like it longer then that can be discussed on the article talk page. I recently noticed that Daryl Katz is similar with the education section.--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:34, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, Canoe. I appreciate your responses. I'll ask my questions at WikiProject Infoboxes. How many occupations would you list for Roger Ebert? --108.45.72.196 (talk) 02:43, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
As many as there are. {{Unbulleted list}} and friends {{Flatlist}} and {{Plainlist}}) are recommended because they generate HTML list markup, which is more "standard". The recommendation and explanation can be found at Template:Plainlist/doc and the Infobox docs, like Template:Infobox person/doc. Not to mention that nice vertical lists with one item per line are easier to maintain than long lines of <BR/>-separated items. —— 12:49, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Alan, for supplying good technical reasons. I'll look at the documentation for the templates you've mentioned. Regarding Roger Ebert: he had two (or at the outside, three) -- film critic and screenwriter, but our article lists five! --108.45.72.196 (talk) 22:55, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

    Table - class no print

An anon got upset at us after a table wouldn't print correctly and added a "no print" command to one of our articles here: I couldn't find any other pages using this, so I doubt it is the done thing. But I also have no idea if there is any way to "fix" the table. So that edit be removed? Rmhermen (talk) 17:42, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

I took a look at it and the table "should" be fixed. (row|col)span values weren't wrapped in quotes and there were some <td> wikitags (|) that were formatted as <tr> wikitags (|-).. simply added a space to fix. Technical 13 (talk) 17:58, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
We're using HTML, not XML, so it's not necessary to quote the values for rowspan= and colspan= attributes. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:22, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
It appears that the changes have not created a table that can be export to PDF and the anon is still unhappy about it. I have never used the PDF feature myself. Are table unprintable? Rmhermen (talk) 01:31, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
To be honest, I haven't used it either. I would think a properly formatted table would print though, so there must be a stray character someplace throwing it off. I'm in bed and don't have access to a computer from bed, but will check the source out again tomorrow and see if I can find it. Technical 13 (talk) 01:54, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

    Undoing a page move

I recently created the article William Leveson (died 1621), and an unidentified editor has moved the page to William Leveson (mercer). Is there some way this page move can be undone? There is another William Leveson, also a mercer, who died in 1593 with whom this William Leveson is often confused, which is why I used the date of death in the title. Any help with this would be much appreciated. NinaGreen (talk) 18:58, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

The diff identifies the mover as User:069952497a. You could ask them on their talk page why they moved it. Unless the father also has an article in Misplaced Pages, it's best to stay with current naming conventions. You could add a note to the top of the article to clarify that this article is about the son not the father. RudolfRed (talk) 19:05, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll leave a message for the editor who moved the page. The former title better satisfies the five criteria specified at Misplaced Pages Article Titles as most people familiar with the subject would not search for this person under 'mercer' since he is much better known for other aspects of his life and career. NinaGreen (talk) 19:09, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Could someone take a quick look at what's happened since? It's looks drastic to me. NinaGreen (talk) 20:25, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Only an admin can move a page back to the exact same name. I requested a rename. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 21:08, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) It might be best to file a request at WP:REPAIR (see also WP:HISTMERGE) making it clear what the correct article title should be. For future ref, a page move can be "undone" by performing a second move back to the previous title. This will work provided that no subsequent edits have been made to the redirect which was created as a result of the initial move. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
We don't have an article for the 1593 William Leveson and it is of my opinion that William Leveson (mercer) is correct for now. See talk page. Technical 13 (talk) 21:24, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
I've responded to this comment on the Talk page, and I hope my reasons are convincing. Thanks to Taketa and Redrose64 for the help! NinaGreen (talk) 21:43, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Watching only a talk page

I notice that when I add a talk page to my watchlist it automatically adds the associated page to the watchlist also. Is there a way to change this or remove the non-talk page from my watchlist? If I'm watching a user's talk page I don't care what happens on their user page. I tried going to "edit watchlist" but it only shows the non-talk page. I'm afraid if I remove it, it will also remove the talk page which is not the result I want. RudolfRed (talk) 19:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Nope; it's built into the software: just as you can't watch the talk page of an article without watching the talk page as well. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:39, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
You mean watch the main page of an article without watching the talk page as well, OM? —Jeremy v^_^v 19:46, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Actually, you can do some CSS work to do so using Misplaced Pages:Hide Pages in Watchlist. The instructions aren't very user friendly, but lets say you wanted to hide the talk page for the help desk, you would go to Special:MyPage/common.css and add the following code:
    .watchlist-5-Help_desk { display: none; }

Alternatively, if you wanted to watch my talk page but not my user page you would add the following code:

    .watchlist-2-Ryan_Vesey { display: none; }

Misplaced Pages:Village Pump/Technical is a good place to go if this doesn't work for you for some reason. Ryan Vesey 19:55, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Trying to add an interwiki link on the Cain and Able page

    Resolved

I am trying to add an interwiki link on the Cain and Abel to the French wikipedia. On the French side they have separate articles for Cain and Able. When I try to add a interwiki link from Cain and Abel to I get an error: "Site link frwiki:Caïn already used by item Q205365." I do not see the french link being used here; what am I missing? meshach (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Interwiki links now go via Wikidata, and as it says, the item D:Q205365 is already linked to fr:Caïn. Wikidata does not allow two different items to point to the same article (see D:WD:Interwiki conflicts), so it is not now possible to link Cain and Abel to fr:Caïn in that way (I think the old interwiki mechanism still works, but I don't think it is recommended. Part of the point of the Wikidata project, I believe is to make sure that interwiki links are really linking corresponding articles rather than loosely connected ones.) --ColinFine (talk) 23:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

    Categories

Sorry about the not very specific title! Anyway, I'm editing the article about Oona O'Neill, who was the daughter of Eugene O'Neill and wife of Charlie Chaplin. She's currently listed as belonging to the category of 'Bermudian actors' and recently this nationality+occupation combo was also added to the 'persondata short description' .

The problem is that O'Neill wasn't really an actress. She did express a desire to go into acting in her youth, but apart from a very short stint in very small role in a play in New Jersey, she never acted in any project and after marrying Chaplin aged 18 stopped pursuing a career in any field. After Chaplin's death, she appeared briefly in a film called Broken English, but this was apparently as a favour to the director, who was her friend, rather than a legitimate attempt from her to become a professional actress (I will be adding sources for all of this information once I get down to overhauling the article). O'Neill therefore never really had an occupation – she was simply known as Eugene O'Neill's daughter and Chaplin's wife. I feel that categorizing her as a 'Bermudian actor' is factually incorrect – but I don't know what to replace it with, since it seems that an 'occupational' category is needed for a biography article. I would be very grateful for any advice on how to categorize her – are there any categories for people who are famous for their marriages? The 'spouse' category only seems to cover royal consorts and politicians' spouses.TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 23:25, 13 April 2013 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3

The article is Oona_O'Neill. (Always good to put a link when you ask for help.)
I see the phrase "Bermudian Actor" shows up twice in the article. The category that shows up on the bottom of the page can be removed by deleting the line:
    ]
There is no requirement that it be replaced with anything else although it would be a good idea to post your reasons on the talk page and the edit comment so people don't think it's vandalism.
    The other line says:
    | SHORT DESCRIPTION = Bermudian actor
As far as I can tell that can be replaced with any description you want. The help text is here. If it's blank it will get tagged, but the point seems to be that if there are multiple people with that name, it identifies which Oona_O'Neill you're talking about. If you think "Charlie Chaplin's wife" is the best description of her, make that change. (Unlike the previous change, this change will not be visible on the page itself, only on certain pages that link to it. Given that there's currently only one "Oona O'Neill" page on Misplaced Pages, changes to that line might not be visible at all.) As I said above, you should post on the talk page to clarify what you're doing. One of the policies here is to be WP:BOLD, so if I've told you anything wrong and someone disagrees you can work it out from there.
I hope that helps! Happy editing! Mattj2 (talk) 00:19, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
She's actually had two roles, which is unfortunately more than a lot of people who attempt the profession get outside of school. Should we really be trying to decide whether someone qualifies to be called an actor or not? Shouldn't we leave that up to sources and the maybe the subject themselves? —— 12:29, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Help editing the label that showed up with my subject's listing once the page was published

    Hello,

I recently wrote a biography entry that was approved and published. The problem is that the label assigned to my article is factually incorrect, and I'm not sure how to fix it since I did not write it.

The article is about Mary Johnson, American writer. Unfortunately, the label that shows up with her name when you search for "Mary Johnson" in Misplaced Pages is "Mary Johnson (American Writer, CEO of A Room of Her Own Foundation)". She is not the CEO, only a co-founder and a director.

How can I edit this or request a change?

Thank you for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.66.227.234 (talk) 01:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

I changed the description at Mary Johnson to say Director instead of CEO. Thanks for pointing out the error. Next time, you can be bold and fix it yourself by clicking the "edit" link at the top of the page. RudolfRed (talk) 01:49, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

A couple of issues with Church maps

I have a number of issues with some of the maps for religious groups on here, most obviously Church of the Brethren, which someone really needs to look at because it has been had a major error for the last 3 years: File:Church of the Brethren map.svg

    File:Anglican C., Porvoo C., Utrecht Union.svg

And the Anglican communion map, which I have a number of issues with, ie, a number of countries served by the US Episcopal Church are colored grey when they should be blue; Nepal and the Central African Republic are blue, despite not being served by any AC affiliate that I can find; Yemen and Iraq are grey, despite another wiki map saying that they are served by the Province of Jerusalem

    File:ECJME.png

And then there is Europe, which is a whole 'nother story because the same countries are served by the Diocese of Gibraltar and the ECUSA affiliated Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe as well as having members of the Porvoo Communion and the Union of Urtrecht.

Who do I talk to about these issues and, better yet, how can I make one of these maps myself? Is it something in wikicommons?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 02:21, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

You can certainly go about making a map yourself, just make sure the changes you are introducing are supported with verifiable and reliable sources. Your map doesn't have to be visually similar, but simply needs to represent the same data, with the updates you propose. If you would like to know how these specific maps were created, or to request these ones to be updated, you can reach out to their creator. By clicking on the image, you will see who uploaded the files, in this case, User:Koavf. You can reach out via their talk page, here. Tiggerjay (talk) 04:56, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
But that is kind of my technical problem - how do I make new maps? Is there some kind of software I need? If I could just point and click and make different countries/states different colors and create my own key, I could easily correct these mistakes myself. Except perhaps for the egregious Brethren map.--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 05:01, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Well the helpdesk deals specifically with helping users on how to use wikipedia itself, however, you appear to be asking more of a generic computer question. I can think of a dozen or so ways to create a map like that. However I will defer you over to the reference desk where you can ask questions about how to do things with your computer to make maps or such. Tiggerjay (talk) 05:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

    learning to use Misplaced Pages

Why is it that, when I try to practice formatting techniques such as italic or ==Elizabeth II== in the sandbox, they do not ever format as italic or as a bold headline, as they should? After I safe the page, it still looks like this: italic or ==Elizabeth II== (with the coding marks) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ellensul (talkcontribs) 17:26, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

I took a look at your tests. You accidentally "broke" the sandbox page when you removed the "-->" at the end of the coding at the top of the page. The effect was to hide everything that came after because that little character string is used to "close" a hidden section. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Not always. The article has only had a few editors and I wanted to get a neutral opinion on the quality of those cites. That's why I came here. Btw, I noticed you didn't even give your opinion about the cites. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 02:43, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
I have no opinion on the cites. I was pointing out that discussion of changes to an article belong on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:49, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Two hours seems like nowhere near enough time to wait for "someone who cares" to see and respond to a request. I'm given to understand that there are people out there who have lives outside WP , and it seems more reasonable to wait a day or two or seven for them to reply, given the mantras of "AGF", "no time limit", and all that.
Urbandictionary is a pretty low-quality source for many things, but might be reasonable for something as subjective, variable, and cutting-edge as music genres, especially when apparently independently corroborated. I didn't recognize any of the examples given, so I'm certainly not able to render an opinion (other than feeling rather old just now ). —— 12:03, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Urban Dictionary is an unreliable source, consisting of user-submitted content, with attempts at regulation by volunteer editotrs, rather like Misplaced Pages. The other source cited seems to be even more unreliable, as it does not even have the limited attempt at regulation that Urban Dictionary has, and allows anyone who chooses to create an account to upload anything. Neither of them is remotely suitable as a source for a Misplaced Pages article. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:32, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
All that being said... User_talk:A11HAV3FA113N and WP:Articles for deletion/Deathstep say allot as well. Technical 13 (talk) 15:24, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Alan, you said, "Two hours seems like nowhere near enough time to wait for "someone who cares" to see and respond to a request. I'm given to understand that there are people out there who have lives outside WP". First, putting aside your sarcasm, this isn't an individual editor's talk page; it's the help desk, which is actively monitored 24/7. So two hours, particularly when all the threads posted after it had already been quickly responded to at the time, was reasonable. More importanly, the two hours I gave was purely as a courtesy. It was all bonus time because I could have simply removed those two cites immediately, without seeking any opinions. Like most editors, I normally do not seek input on the reliability of cites. The only reason I did so in this instance is because I wasn't familiar with those two websites or how cites for an odd subject like a music genre are typically handled. And for the record, even if I had posted it on an editor's talk page, I could of course simply have looked at their contributions log to see if they edited after I posted the comment, thus knowing if they received my message. Rudolf, how often do editors start a discussion on an article's talk page simply and solely to ask if a source is reliable? Relatively speaking, I'm sure it's quite rare because it's typically unnecessary. Fortunately, a great editor/admin (JamesBWatson) subsequently assured me that removal of the cites was clearly appropriate. In fact, I wrote to James after I removed the cites just to make him aware of it; I noticed that he had previously reverted some content in the article. So, again, I was simply being courteous to the editor who added those cites, by saying to James... hey, if you disagree with my removal of the cites, please feel free to revert me. :) 76.189.111.2 (talk) 21:52, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of the article "Nino Micozzi"

I am not trying to blame anyone here, but I think that the article "Nino Micozzi" posted by me should not be deleted. I provided 7 different references and I just want to point out that Nino Micozzi (which I also know personally) is at the same level of Lelio (Les) Marino, which seems to have a Misplaced Pages article that provides far more less information than I provided on Nino Micozzi : Lelio Marino

Well, I don't see how that could be considered "significant". The information I provided on Nino Micozzi was rather similar to Lelio Marino (I mentioned his company, and his donations to Mitt Romney and Scott Brown's campaigns and his acquirements of apartments). Lelio Marino used to have a similar business but almost nothing is said about his biography in the article.

With having that said, how can I make sure that the page "Nino Micozzi" can remain on Misplaced Pages permantly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex-bellux (talkcontribs) 22:17, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

The page was deleted by User:INeverCry, with the explanation "(A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)". This does not say that the person is not notable, but that the article does not establish that he is notable - usually because there are not enough citations of significant mentions in reliable sources independent of the subject. I cannot see the deleted article, so I can't tell what it contained; but I suggest you ask INeverCry on his talk page User Talk:INeverCry.
As for the other article you mention: it is possible that that also should be deleted. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is never accepted as an argument of any weight.
And given that you know Micozzi, you should be aware of Misplaced Pages's position on editors with a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 22:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Can you honestly say that an encyclopedia of general knowledge should contain an article on a local real estate investor? Would you have petitioned Encyclopedia Brittanica to include him? I went to school with a guy that ended up owning a fair amount of commercial real estate in Los Angeles and Miami, and even IPO'd a piece of his firm a few years ago. I play cards with two others that own thousands of rental properties in Los Angeles. I certainly wouldn't propose to write articles about any of them, and despite their significant egos (), I don't think any of them would propose to either. —— 11:48, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

If someone wouldn't mind, could you please complete this edit request at Adam Scott? He's the golfer who just won the Masters. I already made the changes at the 2013 Masters article, but this one is protected. Or, if an admin can unprotect it, I'll make the edits myself. I'm really surprised it's protected because the activity is quite slow. Thanks! --76.189.111.2 (talk) 02:00, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

I removed the duplicate question. Can you clarify what you are asking about? What makes you think anything is wrong with it? Is an error showing up on an article somewhere? RudolfRed (talk) 02:48, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
There was nothing wrong with the citation per se. What you did, as you can see from this diff, was to somehow add a stray set of ref tags (<ref></ref>) higher up on the page next to the section header, probably because you used the formatting button that places these tags with one click, and somehow hit it while your cursor was higher on the page. It's fixed now. The fact that you were adding cited content is great. Just note that what we really want with citations is more transparent attribution than is provided by a naked link. For example, here I changed the citation format to tell the reader who the publisher is (U.S. News & World Report) and what the link went to (Best Law Schools: Ranking of University of Arizona). By the way, the ref tags get no spacing from what they are citing "Text<ref>..." not "text <ref>". One more little tip. When you want to display some markup you are using in edit mode for example purposes, such as the citation above, you can place it in "nowiki" tags (<nowiki></nowiki>). I have done that for you here. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:11, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
BTW, WikEd has had a bug (for some time) of inserting those spaces in front of refs when using the cite template dropdown in the toolbar, which might be one reason we're seeing more of it. It would be great if that could get fixed, or one of the patrolling bots would auto-fix them. —— 03:59, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Yup. It's on the main WikEd maintainer's talk page, which is the forum for bug handling. It's been there quite a while. —— 05:42, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Alan, where is that page? I'd like to report some other bugs with wikEd I've found:
    • Inserts spaces into urls
    • Inserts spaces into internal links (breaks picture links)
    • Capitalizes "some" template argument names
I'm sure there are other things I am forgetting, but those are the ones that annoy the crap out of me off the top of my head. Technical 13 (talk) 11:36, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

    Regarding Misplaced Pages Home Page

    Dear Sir/Ma’am

We know about Misplaced Pages is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that also hosts a range of other projects (likes Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikidata etc.)

Now-a-days or everyday even every time technology has been changing. So, we have to change according to their path. I want to say about the home page, there should be some changes like

All tools should come under "Wikitools"

In Wikitools:- Main page (Wikihome), Help, Editing (Wikiupdate), Toolbox (f_upload, pages, link, info). Similarly,

Wikilanguages: - contains all the languages. (Wikiglobe)

Wikinew: - contains innovation, research, features, May I help you (Help Portal). Note: - Wikinew is different from Wikinews.

I do not want to say that you have to accept these things but there should be change.

list of golden and silver jubilee hits of bollywood

    Sir

Till the year 2000, the benchmark for a successful film was FOR HOW MANY WEEKS THE FILM RAN; that is did the film celebrate golden jubilee or silver jubilee. I would like Misplaced Pages to publish such a list in consultation with TRADE GUIDE/SCREEN/FILM INFORMATION MAGAZINES; I think in TRADE GUIDE 2007 issue a list was published. It would be a great service to movie lovers if such a list is added to the page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.99.201.95 (talk) 15:42, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages does not publish anything in consultation with anybody. Individual editors create and extend articles with information sourced to reliable publications. If the information you are talking about is indeed available in reliable sources, then you may certainly add it to the articles; and it might be appropriate to add it to a relevant infobox. Your mention of TRADE GUIDE 2007 is unhelpful without more information: there are hundreds of organs called "Trade Guide", some of them no doubt reliable and others not.
Your best bet is probably to post at WP:WikiProject Bollywood, and see if you can interest somebody there in your suggestion. --ColinFine (talk) 22:14, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

    Dear editors:

As a bluegrass musician, I have the article about the Banjo on my watchlist. Today an IP user, 204.219.240.15 (talk), vandalized the page. Another IP user quickly reverted the damage. I was going to leave a message on the vandal's talk page, but there is a notice there that one more incident of vandalism will lead to blocking. This is one more. However, it appears to be a school IP address, and maybe another person at the school on a different computer changed it back to prevent the blocking. I am reporting it and will leave it to someone who may know more about this situation. —Anne Delong (talk) 20:38, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

How should ideas be considered “significant minority views” as in WP:RS?

Currently Chinese wikipedia is warring about whether Richard Wurmbrand's view that Karl Marx is a satanist should be included in the article. I just wonder how would this kind of problem be solved in English wikipedia?--Inspector (talk) 05:17, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Without looking directly at the discussion taking place over at the Chinese WP page, generally there isn't a significant problem if an individual is quoted as making a claim about someone else, if there is reliable sources which are verifiable. There was an issue I helped out with regarding Joan Crawfords alleged bisexuality, you might find the discussion that took place insightful. Tiggerjay (talk) 05:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Inspector: In the early life section, there is (unsourced) content that says, "As an adolescent, he was sent to study Marxism in Moscow, but returned clandestinely the following year." Then, in the achievements and influence section, it says, "He compiled circumstantial evidence that Marx was a satanist." Therefore, assuming it is indeed a fact that Wurmbrand studied Marxism, his view about Karl Marx would certainly be relevant and worthy of inclusion. So I'm not sure what the problem is. I also don't understand what you mean by "minority view"; it is his (the subject's) view about Marx, not a third-party view about Wumbrand. Or, are you saying that there is debate about whether Wumbrand actually claimed that Marx was a satanist?

The template {{cite book}} doesn't support a copyright field - what the message is telling you is that the software is ignoring what it considers to be an unknown parameter. You can get rid of the message by removing the |copyright= segment in the reference entirely. Yunshui  12:55, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. Good result.
Re your question purpose of text "The Tachash": I got curious, followed through, went to Google Books, entered the full title "Sacred Monsters: Mysterious and Mythical Creatures of Scripture, Talmud and Midrash". That text "The Tachash" is a subheading of the first chapter "Unicorns of Different Colors"—it appears on the table of contents. Google Books has feature "next page" at top of window displaying text, and I was able to read the whole section "The Tachash". I'm guessing, of course, but it seems like the editor who made the footnote gave us a ready means to check the source. --Espresso-con-pana (talk) 17:08, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    Collapsing a navbox

How can I achieve that the navbox at the bottom of my draft here shows in collapsed state? It is transcluded as {{Number-theoretic algorithms|state=collapsed}} but appears uncollapsed on the page. Is that because the template markup contains | state = uncollapsed or is there another reason why this happens? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: you should be able to fix it by <noinclude.ing the | state = parameter. I think changing it to | state = {{{state<includeonly>|uncollapsed</includeonly>}}} would achieve the desired effect, but I'm not a technical whiz, so I'd recommend checking with someone who is first. It's a pretty well-transcluded template, so any changes will have to be right first time... Yunshui  13:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
    Resolved
    Short answer: yes. Longer answer: {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} calls {{Navbox}}. {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} did not have it's own {{{state}}} so it wasn't passing your |state=collapsed to {{Navbox}}. I have corrected the issue by replacing |state=uncollapsed in {{Number-theoretic algorithms}} with |state={{{state|uncollapsed}}}. Technical 13 (talk) 13:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    Same person, two User IDs?

If one has reason to think the same person is posting to an article under two different User IDs, what should one do? Is there a procedure for checking into this sort of thing? NinaGreen (talk) 17:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    • WP:SPI is the process for this. Bear in mind, the onus is on the case filer to demonstrate the suspicion and provide the evidence, not on the people that man the process. --(ʞɿɐʇ) ɐuɐʞsǝp 17:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
      • Thanks. Would it be appropriate to simply ask the question on the article Talk page? One of the Users has provided not only his real name but a great deal of other personal information on his User page. The other User is using an IP address. Both recently joined Misplaced Pages, and both have taken an unusual interest in a very obscure point, so I have some reason for thinking that the two Users might be the same person. However I don't want to stray into anything which could be construed as attempting to 'out' the User who is posting under an IP address (I don't see how I could 'out' the other User since he's already 'outed' himself fully on his User page). Would it be permissible to simply ask on the article Talk page? NinaGreen (talk) 17:59, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Two relevant policies with regard to your concerns are WP:SOCK and WP:OUTING. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 20:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Having read over these policies just now, I can't see that simply asking on the Talk page whether the two users are the same would be construed as 'outing'. But before doing that, I'd really appreciate confirmation from someone that it would not be construed as 'outing' to do that. NinaGreen (talk) 20:35, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
If the registered user has an associate email address, you could ask in an email. If not, the proper thing to do is simply send it to WP:SPI with the username(s) and IP you think are involved, and they can quickly using WP:CheckUser determine if there is possibly a connection or not. Technical 13 (talk) 21:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Nina, WP:OUTING is very clear about what is and is not considered outing. And WP:SOCK is very clear on what constitutes proper and improper usage of mulitple accounts, and fully explains how to report suspected inappropriate sockpuppetry. Tang Dynasty in Inner Asia

In the "Tang Dynasty in Inner Asia" an expert needs to insert a reference to the Battle of Talas which happened in 751. The Dynasty article is written in chronological order so that a paragraph can be inserted about the battle. I have no skills about editing articles so someone else needs to do the editing. wikipedia page

I am trying to make a page for Todd Lieberman, but it says that I am not providing "reliable sources." All my credits are listed on IMDB and Studio System. Can you please clarify?

thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tliebermanwiki (talkcontribs) 18:10, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

WP:IMDB is not a reliable source because most of its content is user-generated (like Misplaced Pages). You may also wish to read Misplaced Pages's guidlines on editing with a conflict of interest. Livewireo (talk) 18:50, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL <--- This is one template we use to find sources, if that is any help.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:35, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    Travis Blackley

    Travis Blackley (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

In the bio box when you immediately type "Travis Blackley", you show his spouse as Arynne Tiller. I am Arynne's mother, Monica Tiller, and as Travis' wiki bio states, he is divorced from my daughter Arynne and therefore she is no longer his spouse. I have clicked on the "Feedback" tag many times and when I click "Wrong" to correct the info I find that it still remains to be changed/removed. His other info has been updated such as his move from the Oakland Athletics to the Houston Astros, but not the Spouse information. Can this be corrected? Thank you. Monomt (talk) 20:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

The Misplaced Pages article is correct. I think you are referring to the content on the right hand side of the search results when you Google his name. That should be corrected when Google's index is next updated but we have no control over that.--ukexpat (talk) 20:34, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

    Use Pictures From BBC Documentary

Would it be acceptable under our fair-use of copyrighted material policy to include pictures from the BBC's undercover documentary on North Korea (see ). I know in most countrys, it wouldn't be allowed. However, seeing as editors would be risking their life to take a picture of the 'hidden side' of the country, can we use the pictures as there is no reasonable way to get a free-use alternative? Oddbodz (talk) 20:47, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I think this is a question for WP:MCQ where they specialise in copyright and WP:NFCC issues.--ukexpat (talk) 20:56, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I have asked over there. Oddbodz (talk) 21:27, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Problems Editing/Updating Viable Info on Pages

In trying to edit pages on numerous artists/bands (to provide most current bio/touring and imaging info.) we submitted, but the next day none of our changes were reflected on the page. They weren't even red flagged, just removed.

Is there a verification process we need to go through in order to update content and images?

Is there a limit to how much you can change? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PLGPress (talkcontribs) 21:11, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

No, there is no limit to how much you can change. But material in Misplaced Pages is required to be neutral in tone, not promotional, not copyrighted, and referenced to reliable sources. If you look at the history of Casting Crowns, for example, you'll see that User:Walter Görlitz reverted two of your edits with the summary " Peacocking, unreferenced material. More promotional", and three more with the summary "This file may meet the criteria for speedy deletion. This file is a copyright violation because it is copyrighted and not published under a free license". Please see WP:PEACOCK and WP:COPYRIGHT for explanation of more of these terms. If you disagree with Walter's evaluation, please discuss the matter on the article's talk page or his talk page.
I also note that you say "we". Please note that it is a violation of Misplaced Pages's rules for several people to use the same account: if there are several of you editing, you should have individual user accounts. See WP:ROLE. --ColinFine (talk) 22:44, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
(Later): I've just seen that Walter has already posted on your talk page explaining his actions and inviting discussion. --ColinFine (talk) 22:49, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

How do I get the title of an article I created changed?

Hi, how do I get the title of an article I created changed? I created an article about a region of Greenland called "Kronprins Christian Land" but erroneously entitled it "Kongprins Christian Land." Thank you.

Larry Grossman (talk) 23:02, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

You actually named it "Kongprins Christian Land". There shouldn't be quotation marks around titles. I have moved it to Kronprins Christian Land. Your account is not autoconfirmed yet so you cannot move articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:29, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Very Poor Experience with Editors Bagumba and Muboshgu

I am a Padres fan and over the past months I've tried to add detail to the "Jeff Moorad" article. The article seems to have been stripped of a great amount of detail. Not sure I understand the rationale behind this? Removing the entire Community Work section seems especially strange: almost as if there were a personal campaign against Mr. Moorad by some editors... Honestly, I am done editing this article. Over the past months I've tried to add detail to the article, much of it coming from an MLB.com biography and some from more recent news articles, etc. I feel cheated as a Misplaced Pages user that my edits have been stripped in the name of mere technicalities. There seems to be no protection from the tyrrany of Misplaced Pages editors. Pretty interesting that when the community tries to get involved in editing an article, there is this harsh a response from Misplaced Pages editors. Of course, I understand fully: Editors Bagumba and Muboshgu have found niches here on the baseball sections of Misplaced Pages, and someone trying to help with the articles would take some of their power. The editors used seemingly every tactic to remove my edits, including accusations of slanting sources, etc. Yet, it seems that the editors are slanted in the very opposite direction to which they accuse me of being. Practically every edit I made would be removed and I would receive a message directing me to the "Welcome Page." I will not study the welcome page as I do not plan to spend hours on end editing Misplaced Pages articles, and I don't think that Jimmy Wales' intention was to have every user known every technical detail, but rather to come together and share our knowledge and create a great resource for the world. I've tried to do that and found that I haven't been able to do so.

This is not what Misplaced Pages has been to me, and I'm sorry that it has had to be this way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.155.80.248 (talk) 23:31, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

What you call "technicalities" another editor may feel are important principles by which the project is built: verifiability, neutrality and exclusion of promotional content. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
