Concise wikipedia proposal

Made a proposal at here for a concise edition of wikipedia which is formatted much like an old book encyclopedia with the bare main facts and a smallish word limit for articles as a reference point. Can't imagine all would support, but any input from anybody would be warmly welcome.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:45, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Not a bad idea but why should it be formatted like an old book? Maybe the first priority would be to define volume in terms of both length of individual articles and overall length of the publication. Maybe max. 500 words per article and 100,000 articles for the enterprise. --Ipigott (talk) 21:22, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I was thinking that, a virtual book. And yes, 400-500 words I was thinking of. Also proposed a scaling of the Geograph project to a global one, imagine having access to photos of every square kilometre of Danish islands for instance!! ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:27, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

WikiGeograph (or perhaps WikiGeophotograph) seems a better name. I was not aware of the existence of the UK Geograph and have just been playing around with it. I found the navigation very easy and discovered lots of photos of places I know well. Yes, it would indeed be great to have the same approach for Denmark - and of course for Luxembourg too. But maybe it would be more manageable to take it one continent or country at a time, starting with Europe, at least to assist project management. --Ipigott (talk) 08:22, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Isn't that already kinda what Simple Misplaced Pages does? The articles are shorter, simpler and don't have all the details of the WP ones and if the person wants a longer one they can come here. Kumioko (talk) 09:22, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Not really. Simple wikipedia is simple English and articles may be as long as anybody wishes. Simple and concise are not the same thing.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 10:51, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I am fairly new to it but have been editing there quite a bit this month and it seems that the general attitude there is that the article should be simply written and short, lacking many of the deep in the weeds details that would be required for an article here to make it to FA. The general attitude seems to be that if the reader wants to get more details then they can simply go to the larger more complete article (presumably) here if they want more info. Kumioko (talk) 14:06, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
First, I am thrilled to see that you are still active, Kumioko. I have been thinking for some years about trying to do something there, but bloody things keep popping up on an almost daily basis here. Basically, my own impression, for what little that might be worth, is that a lot of the content there is, more or less, a bit longer than the lede sections in the main wikipedia are supposed to be. That is in no way bad, but I myself think, maybe, it might not be a bad goal to have most of the articles for a possible "concise wikipedia" to be basically about as long as our ledes here, with maybe some of the more involved articles, like United States, Christianity, Physics, and others a bit longer, serving as sort of an equivalent to the Britannica macropedia articles. Maybe. Anyway, Kumioko, if you ever deal with any content relating to Christianity over there, and think that maybe some discussion of it in the Christianity newsletter here would help, let me know, or, if you want, maybe even write out what you want to include in it. John Carter (talk) 01:29, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Kumioko (talk) 02:00, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, technically every wikipedia article should have a book encyclopedia type lead summary. Unfortunately the vast majority don't have a decent lead...

Since I don't keep track of going ons on Meta much, please keep me abreast of any developments in relation to this project. Thanks. Volunteer Marek  02:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Not likely much, the response has been a little underwhelming. When 10 times as many people comment on an RFA than a new encyclopedia proposal it makes you wonder why you bother...♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 16:28, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
I still think this is an excellent proposal. The only reason for my hesitation in becoming actively involved is that I tend to commit myself to too many things at the same time. But I am nevertheless a strong supporter of the idea. --Ipigott (talk) 21:27, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Well, I think we all have the same thoughts about commitment to such a project. but its just those who are interested in the concept initially I guess. Such a project would pick up contributors anyway if it was created.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 16:50, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I think we do have enough support, but just not clarity in them. Maybe a plan on the issue might help. Everyone has different ideas about everything else. So a point-by-point discussion might help. (P.S. I dont check the meta much so it might help if you just tell me when something happens there) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 06:48, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Blofeld! I like your idea a lot, so I've been playing around a bit with a demo which I think you might find interesting: http://waldir.github.com/primerpedia/ Let me know your thoughts! --Waldir 22:04, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Purang-Guge kingdom

"Oh Doctor, dear Doctor, I'm hurting - there's a pain where there once was a heart" - which is why I haven't been contributing to the WP recently - much as I wish I could be. Unfortunately, it has been an increasing struggle to just keep up with daily matters and get a bit of work done on my books recently. I just haven't had enough good time left over for the WP - which is really a shame as I enjoy and admire it so much. Anyway, I added a blockquote and a Footnote section to this article before I stumbled across the fact that there is already quite an extensive article on Guge, and it occurs to me that, although they were closely connected, these small kingdoms do seem to deserve separate articles on each, as they each had separate existences and histories at times and should, therefore, I believe, each deserve the sort of status and coverage Leichenstein receives in the WP. Of course, it is easy for me to say this, but I am not up to doing it all myself at the moment - though I would be most happy to assist by adding quotes and references, etc. Please have a think about it and let me know what you think. If you do agree - and would start stubs for Purang and Maryul - I will try to add some material. If you feel you cannot do it and/or do not have enough info to hand - but are happy for it to happen - again, let me know - and when I have a better day I will try to establish stubs for them. Hope you are well and happy. Cheers, Big Bad John. John Hill (talk) 01:25, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Strange it may seem, but I started working on the same subject yesterday night and wanted to start on Tholing Monastery after the Tabo Monastery article (nominated today on DYK). I have added some text to the Purang-Guge article from the references I have gathered, which you and John Hill have started. I have left a message on his talk page in this regard to tell me if it is OK to add more text.--Nvvchar. 07:27, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for jumping in on some of those recent article. Nomed a bunch. Any help with qpq is appreciated. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:19, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

British villages and country houses are high on my interests, what are you on? Looks like you've done a good job already.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 12:29, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I had some minor qualms about promoting a business. But there can't be many Grade II listed buildings that do B&B, can there? Or perhaps that's already a Category!? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:55, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Grade II? I think there'd be a fair few B&Bs, pubs/inns and hotel which are Grade II listed in the UK.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 19:41, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Obviously, we don't all move in such elevated social circles, sob. Ah well, back to Budgens... :( Martinevans123 (talk) 19:44, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Maroda

I've been trying to fix up this article and I've been having a heck of a time finding sources. I checked the Census of India and it actually showed five different villages named Maroda in the same state (13 in the country). This village is code 046294 (is that normally included in articles?) In any case, I haven't yet figured out whether I'll find enough to improve the article, but considering the large amounts of Marodas, should the current article be moved to Maroda, Pauri Garhwal and the article Maroda turned into one that says "Maroda" is the name of several Indian villages and then disambiguates them? Ryan Vesey 17:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I can find sources like this one with some demographic information, is that acceptable for an article like this where there's really not much? In addition, can wikimapia be used for coordinates? Ryan Vesey 18:16, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Er, even more confusing, when I imagine a village, I think of a rural, sparsely inhabited place. This is a school in the village, and it appears like the "village" is actually something like a neighborhood in a city. Is that correct or am I confused? If that is the case, are villages notable in the same way other settlements are? Ryan Vesey 18:19, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Eeks Indian villages, advise staying away from them unless you want a major headache" Wikimapia is fine for coordinates,♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:35, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

1000°

Do you know of any search engines that will actually search for 1000° with the degree mark? I keep trying but it treats it as if I just wrote 1000. Ryan Vesey 21:49, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

1000° magazine?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:50, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Yep, searches for 1000° magazine and 1000 magazine give me the same unhelpful results. Ryan Vesey 21:55, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
You need to use the special "Deutsche Grad Celsius" symbol, haha. But why wouldn't simply translating the wiki.de article be a starting point? Because none of the sources are in English? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:58, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
The German article doesn't have any sources either that confirm notability. The first two sources are primary and the third one is unrelated, only referencing the Kreuzer magazine. The only claim of mere significance in the German article would be that they had an online club guide as early as 1996, which is equally unreferenced by secondary sources.
In related news, I have also nominated 5vor12 for deletion. It has pretty much the same Problem. De728631 (talk) 22:09, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. At least we now know that German notability would be just as good (if not better) than English notability. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:24, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Yup, and problems have a capital P in Germany, more important!♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:25, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Houses...

Good doctor, I don't understand...should this be moved again? I'm on a London house binge, and am disquieted by the country tag. I'll take it to talk if I think there will be much opposition. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:41, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Country house is is a certain type of house. London townhouses are not, but there are many country type houses within Greater London that used to be part of Kent or whatever. We could change the name of the London category to something like Category:Stately homes in London but I don't think changing the whole list name and category system just for London is worth it.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:44, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Oh I totally agree, its just that the lead seems to include almost any house, suggesting that it is a list of "historic houses". Gareth E Kegg (talk) 21:53, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

While I have completed this article Paranapiacaba for your inputs I have added quite a bit of text to Rio Grande da Serra also. Pl see and add.--Nvvchar. 13:18, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

I've expanded Paranapiacaba, but it needs about +500 ch more. I nomed Ved Vejen with image but the img has been removed; sigh. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:21, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Guge

Hi there. Thanks for working out Zanda/Tholing village. Need some help with sorting out two other things. First, see History of Tibet which wl to Guge which is a lot like the article we've been working on, Purang-Guge kingdom. Second, in Tholing Monastery, there are some photos of a White Temple, but we don't mention a white temple/chapel, etc. in the article itself, and I think we should, though I couldn't find any references to a "white" building at Tholing. Maybe you have access to some other sources? --Rosiestep (talk) 15:31, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Yeshe-Ö! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:34, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

I have added to Yeshe-Ö, Zanda, Toling Monastery and fixed references to all tags in Purang-Guge kingdom. You may have to add some more text under History section of Yeshe-Ö to complete his history till his death. I will add some text to the article you have suggested tomorrow and then nominate. I am very tired now.--Nvvchar. 17:46, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

I have nomed Yeshe-Ö, Tholing, Tholing Monastery (piped as monastery), and Purang-Guge kingdom. I'll finish up the QPQs today. Can you please add an img? --Rosiestep (talk) 20:31, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it should/would if I had nomed them in one fell swoop, except that I did it the painful way... at 3 different times... each time kicking myself for not originally thinking it through with a multi hook. If you can change the nom title to include all four, please go for it! --Rosiestep (talk) 21:19, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Yay! (QPQs 1,2,3 done). --Rosiestep (talk) 21:23, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
