Seriously, please only close noticeboard threads when they're clearly done. Black Kite (talk) 00:27, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Actually, that was a good close. Nothing productive is or will come of that discussion. I've closed it again. Ed  01:21, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
No, there was still a conversation occurring at that point. It's gone off topic since then, admittedly. Black Kite (talk) 01:25, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, true, I hadn't gone into the history, just the page as it is now – apologies. Ed  01:32, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

IP Attacks

Rcsprinter123, my user page is under IP user attacks. Is there a way to get it locked? Thank you, -rJay — Preceding unsigned comment added by RJay (official) (talkcontribs) 02:47, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) RJay, with your real life activity and your very explicit user page with all your personal details, it is hardly surprising that it my be subject to occasional vandalism and it probably of course comes from people who know you. Most editors at Misplaced Pages choose to keep their anonymity - although they are not required to. For one mild case of vandalism to your user page, protection would be inappropriate - you are the one who can change something here. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:39, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
I've responded by filling in some references, because I'm mad about that. If it happens again we will get the user blocked, (if you report it), rather than protecting it so you can't edit the page yourself. Rcsprinter (gas) @ 09:32, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, Rcsprinter123. :) Kudpung, it was more than once. And he even knew how to do a ton of minor edits to make it hard to undo. :P But be that as it may, I don't know how to report an IP address. Anyway, I chose to make the page like it is, for a few different reasons. Thank you both for your help. RJay (official) (talk) 12:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
(It's easier to revert loads of edits with rollback, but that's for more advanced users.) Rcsprinter (natter) @ 12:40, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
I've blocked the IP for a short while. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:03, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Image deletion

Hi. I'm confused by the tag you put on File:Soul2SoulII2006.jpg. If an image is being used on a fair use basis, why does it matter exactly what its source was? There's no doubt that it is under copyright, but the fair use rationale should allow it to be included in the one article where it is. Or have I missed something here? Thanks. Wasted Time R (talk) 10:38, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Every image, regardless of its copyright status, must have some source information, be that own work, a URL, whatever. But Google Images does not count because that is only a search engine. That's like saying Obama has bunny ears because I found it on Google, but no specific link is given. It's all part of RS. Rcsprinter (state the obvious (or not)) @ 11:04, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

RFD

Please note WP:NACD "Closing discussions in which you have offered an opinion or for a page in which you have a vested interest (i.e. a page that you have edited heavily) should be avoided." You can't close it and drmies was withdrawing his personal attack - the nomination was by me not him and his withdrawal had nothing to do with the nomination. Really if this is the level of non-admin closure you've been carrying out then someone should be reviewing all of your recent closes. Stuart.Jamieson (talk) 15:56, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Howabout somebody closes it then. There's no harm it existing. Rcsprinter (deliver) @ 16:32, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Normally I would be gobsmacked to see an editor closing a discussion in which they have such a vested interest, especially as there is no clear "keep" outcome anyway. With Rcsprinter however nothing surprises me. I previously had to revert their closure of an AfD in which they had !voted.--Charles (talk) 17:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Could we please avoid piling on and needlessly denigrating other users? That comment is neither productive nor conducive to a pleasant editing environment, and while it does demonstrate some prior history of trouble surrounding NACs, there is a very simple solution here. Rcsprinter, would you consider not doing NACs for the time being? Uninvolved admins can do the closures, and you're better at other things anyway. -— Isarra 21:10, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

I've asked at WP:ANI for an uninvolved admin to look over your NACs, I do think there are concerns there but an uninvolved admin looking over them could dispel my concerns. Stuart.Jamieson (talk) 22:57, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.
