Boleto Bancário, simply referred to as Boleto is a payment method in Brazil regulated by FEBRABAN, short for Brazilian Federation of Banks.
A boleto can be paid at ATMs, branch facilities and internet banking of any Bank, Post Office, Lottery Agent and some supermarkets until its due date. After due date it can only be paid at the issuer bank facilities.
Boleto can only be collected by an authorized Collector Agent in the Brazilian territory. All Brazilian banks, Post Office (Correios) and Lottery Agencies plus some companies from the private sector have joined the system .
How it works
Boleto Bancário is a financial document that can be issued by a merchant following a set of specifications which is regulated by FEBRABAN (Brazilian Federation of Banks).
But first the merchant needs to go and see his/her bank manager, so called issuer bank, to sign a contract in order to get the merchant payment code.
Boletos enable the merchant's clients to pay the specified amounts at any premise that is part of the Brazilian Payment Network.
The parties involved in this billing transaction are the Merchant's Bank (issuer bank), the Merchant(Cedente), the Merchant's Client (Sacado) and the Colletor Agents.
Merchant's Bank: Financial institution responsible for issuing and collecting based on previous agreement with the merchant. The bank, once authorized to collect payment for the Merchant, will credit the amount owed by the Client in the Merchant's bank account.
Cedente (Merchant): The individual or corporate entity that issues the boleto and whose account will be credited.
Sacado (Client): The individual or corporate entity that pays the boleto.
Collector Agents: These are the network facilities of banks, post office (Correios), Lottery Agencies and even large corporation networks such as supermarkets, chemists, etc, who are authorized to collect payments on behalf of the issuer bank.
Boleto's Main Characteristics
Bar Code: A FEBRABAN common standard (always 103mm in length and 13mm in height) designed to be scanned and read by a digital laser scanner.
Human Readable Code: Its a numerical representation of the bar code which can be used to pay it via Internet Banking.
