Ganas is an intentional community, or housing and resources co-operative in New Brighton, Staten Island. Ganas is "an urban experiment in open dialogue based on full disclosure and commitment to exploring applications of Feedback Learning".More popularly known as a commune, Ganas is a member of the Federation of Egalitarian Communities. The community was founded in 1979 and consists of a core-group of a dozen partners.
Name
The Oxford Spanish-English dictionary defines Ganas as a conjugation of the verb "ganar" meaning "to earn","to gain" or "to win". Ganas defines their name as "motivation strong enough for action"
History
The group that would become Ganas got its start in 1973 when Mildred Gordon was working as a management consultant in Arizona. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and tried biofeedback to heal herself. Her cancer receded and she moved to San Francisco to study biofeedback. There she met the five people who would become the core-group of the Ganas community. Gordon incorporated the Foundation for Feedback Learning(FFL) in 1974 and the community went by the name FFL until changing their name to Ganas in the early 1990s. They moved into a Lower East Side apartment but when they needed more space they moved to Tompkinsville, Staten Island in 1979.
On Staten Island the core-group shares ownership of the eight houses, and three commercial buildings that house the retail stores. Their first retail space called "Everything Goes" opened on November 12, 1983. They focus on reuse and recycling and other aspects of simple living. They have a used furniture store that opened in 1986; a used clothing store that opened in 1991; and an Internet cafe that sells used books, and other media, fair trade tea, and organic espresso that opened in 2004. There are about 80 to 90 people who live in the houses and cover expenses by either paying, or working in the stores for expense coverage.
On May 29, 2006, Ganas co-founder Jeff Gross was shot five or six times and survived. At trial he identified the shooter as Rebekah Johnson. Johnson lived at Ganas for two separate periods since 1986. She was asked to leave both times and was finally forcibly evicted in 1996. Johnson was acquitted on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and attempted grand larceny following less than five hours of deliberation by a jury on August 4, 2008. Jeff Gross claims he was "booted out" of Ganas in October 2007 and is currently suing the group for over $20 million.

Ms. Johnson had been thrown out of Ganas twice for violating its rules. Ganas members said after the shooting that she had quit working at the commune-run thrift store and had stopped contributing to the group's finances. They said she waged a 10-year war against the commune before the shooting.
