Seattle Sounders FC

I'd be the 1st to know since I'm from Seattle, if they put the name down as Freddie Ljungberg, then the page should be named Freddie Ljungberg, that's what I've been trying to tell you guys. – Michael (talk) 19:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't care, the page should be "Freddie Ljungberg", you're making a big deal about nothing. – Michael (talk) 22:50, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
It should be Freddie Ljungberg, I don't care if his nickname is Freddie. Example, Jô is Joao Alves de Assis Silva's nickname, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, a lot of pages have nicknames for their titles, so I don't get why you would question me titling Fredrik Ljungbergs page as Freddie Ljungberg, that's what I ment by not caring, you understand? – Michael (talk) 00:24, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Until now. Seattle Sounders FC. – Michael (talk) 03:50, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Does this change it? – Michael (talk) 04:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
If it's Fredrik Ljungberg and Seattle has his name as Freddie Ljungberg, that makes it all confusing, as I said earlier is that I changed it to Freddie Ljungberg because the Seattle Sounders put his name down as Freddie Ljungberg. Things change dude. – Michael (talk) 17:30, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Just wanted to say cheers for your help on the refdesk question I had about Xbox360 HDMI cable - I have since bought one for under £5 and it works perfectly, thanks for the help. 194.221.133.226 (talk) 11:03, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Yossef Muadi, a Arab citizens of Israel#Druze was killed fighting along with the Israeli army

He was corporal Yossef Muadi , a corporal in the Israeli army (read the inter-wikipedia-link in the title above on Israeli Druze, they align themselves with the Jews since Israel's creation and as opposed to Israeli Muslims fight in the Israeli army, many of them are high ranking officers

Over-achievers

Great work on the box and intro. Rather than cut and paste the two sandboxes and then go live I'm just going to be bold and do that straight into a list on mainspace at List of football players with top domestic, continental and international honours. If this link is blue, you know what to do... Ben MacDui 19:18, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Observations

I note with interest your comments at 2008-2009 Israel Gaza conlict. You state that you do not "buy" UN anti-Israel bias. The reason why many feel the UN is indeed anti-Israel, is because of the disproportionate number of United Nations resolutions concerning Israel. This is due to the Arab-Muslim block who are naturally biased aginst Israel. Secondly, you mention "if any other country in the world bombed a school filled with refugee families killing the same number civilians, it would cause an outcry." And rightly so. I have not compared reactions, but would suggest that the international resonse to the Israeli school attack would be more widespread than, let's say the Vaharai Bombing attack. I think this kind of hypocrisy gets at some Israel supporters. Regards, Chesdovi (talk) 00:18, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (File:Tv3sweden.svg)

You've uploaded File:Tv3sweden.svg, and indicated that it's used under Misplaced Pages's rules for non-free images. However, it's not presently used in any articles. Misplaced Pages policy requires that non-free images be either used or deleted, so if this image isn't used in an article in the next week, it will be deleted.

Image copyright problem with File:UEFA Super Cup.gif

Thanks for uploading File:UEFA Super Cup.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Misplaced Pages's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

La liga squad templates

I was under impression that only first team players were to be listed on squad templates which means basicly there should only be twenty-five players listed plus those who have injury exemptions like van Nistelrooy & Diarra. Rfef states that players with kit numbers between 1-25 are on the first team while those players from the reserves and youth squads have kit numbers from 26 on upwards. Bueno & Palanca plus any other reserve or youth team members who are called to the first team are to be listed in the "from the youth section". Raul17 (talk) 19:46, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

The Italian and English rules are different from the Spanish. But if you think about it, would it make sense to list every reserve player who makes a first team appearance? Raul17 (talk) 02:46, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

{{infobox football match}}

Great work on this. The new layout is quite a bit cleaner, and makes the scoreline stand out. Cheers! Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 10:49, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: a or an?

It's "an" because the word that immediately follows the indefinite article begins with a vowel sound. It just sounds wrong to say "a association football league", just like it would be wrong to say "a elephant". That's why. – PeeJay 01:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Template:Infobox football match

I've come across a problem with this template. Take a look at 1983 FA Cup Final and you may see what I mean. – PeeJay 14:07, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

I can't say I'm a big fan of that solution, as it seems to be presenting the score at the top as some sort of aggregate result, when the two results should be treated equally. I was rather hoping it would be possible to make the "team1" and "team2" fields optional when "Replay" is entered in the "secondleg" field. – PeeJay 15:26, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, good point. Then again, since the font size for the scores is smaller when there is a second leg, it should be possible to see the result of both matches on the screen at once, which should make it clear. – PeeJay 15:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Edwin van der Sar/Andres Palop

Re: your edit summary on Edwin van der Sar, why can't we have it thus? It makes no sense having a player's national team listed if he's made no appearances for the team. I think this may be a topic for the WikiProject as a whole to discuss. – PeeJay 22:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

As long as the situation is properly explained in the article prose, then the start date really should be the year of the player's first cap. – PeeJay 22:41, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I disagree, but like I say, maybe this should be taken to WT:FOOTY, as it affects a plethora of articles. – PeeJay 23:18, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I have now started a discussion at WT:FOOTY. – PeeJay 23:39, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

{{UEFA Cup seasons}}

Regarding this edit, what do you mean "aligns correctly"? Got a test case? All this extra markup should certainly not be necessary to miss minor alignment problems. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:33, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

League matches in Portal: Current events/Sports

The consensus so far is that domestic league matches are generally not reported on this article. Therfor your edit was reversed by another editor. If you like to discuss this issue, please do it on the article's talk page.--Nitsansh (talk) 17:09, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Europa League teams

The rule of thumb is to list teams when we are absolutely sure that they'll be in this position. Kingjeff (talk) 03:08, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Help

I was wondering if you could help me with Kingjeff, and his trolling my talk page. So far he's readded comments that I've deleted, which is my sovereign right to do, only once, but if it continues, can you intervene or begin intervention as a quasi third party. I have history with this guy. I realize you're involved in the content dispute on the Europa League article, but you're neutral about his comments on my talk page. Either way please reply on my talk page. Thanks. -- Grant.Alpaugh 03:54, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Something at the Administrator's Noticeboard. I don't know which one. It's not 3RR yet, but messing with someone's talk page is off limits, I know that much. If you can't help, no big deal, but like I said I've got history with this guy. -- Grant.Alpaugh 04:03, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Hakan Yakin

I have reverted your edit. There are numerous reasons as to why subject's names are given in a variety of languages across the site, and ethnicity is just one of them. The variation I gave you is not simply the way his name is spelt in another language, it is the model on which his actual name is based; if I wanted to give people's names in other languages, I'd have sought their forms in Arabic, Mandarin and the like. These are not relevant here. I recently sent this message which may explain to you the practice: (the bottom two paragarphs), it gives numerous examples. If the code of practice does not suit you, please attempt to standardise the pages given, then we can discuss the Yakin brothers. Thank you. Evlekis (talk) 23:14, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

FC de Rakt

Thanks for taking part in the AfD debate for FC de Rakt. I notice you haven't actually voted though - would you like to do so? ðarkuncoll 07:16, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

It isn't a vote. Chandler's comment will have just as much weight as any top-level comment. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 08:14, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Okay - I wasn't really sure if it was just the votes that counted. ðarkuncoll 12:45, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Homer Simpson and Macedonia

Nice link you gave in your response, Homer & his spider-pig rule! :)

Anyway, see my evidence page, how do you explain the related searches in English speaking countries like alexander macedonia (not the search "ancient macedonia" that also appears) and macedonia greece (not "greek macedonia"). People just put one second word like "alexander" to find the right "macedonia" when they search Google. And here is just a sample of American media uses of "Macedonia", alone with no qualifiers like "ancient" or "Greek": to refer to Macedonia in antiquity to refer to the region or the Greek part of it. Also note that media would be reporting recent news mostly. Try searching for "Macedonia" in a sample of English books in Google Books. "Aristotle was born in Macedonia":234 results. "Aristotle was born in Macedon": 4 results."Aristotle was born in ancient Macedonia":5 results. So what English speakers are you refering to? Try other searches like this and be objective. Thank you Shadowmorph (talk) 19:29, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
See also "tomb in Macedonia":198 results and "tomb in Macedon":2 results.
Oh, and you said Macedonia with no context, doesn't the "...to hold elections" constitute a modern-country context? Shadowmorph (talk) 21:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Competion, not the final

Hi. UEFA rebranded the competition before the 1992-93 season, but not the final, which was rebranded only in 1995. Look at the poster, or at the tickets, or see this video about the 1993's final in Youtube : there were no symbols of the UCL in the stadium, not at all. The official name of the match was "The 38th European Champion Clubs' Cup Final". Bye!--Akrothiri (talk) 22:01, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Wait a moment, look at the sources! The logo in the the video is not original, it has been put nowadays by the tv channel (ESPN Classic Sport, if you look in HD). Listen, in this link the situation is clear : 1993 and 1994 were official called "European Champion Clubs'Cup Final" yet (1994's poster is in English, if you dont't undestand the 1993 German one). In 1995 the final was first called Uefa Champions League final . UEFA internet site talks about the 1992/93 season because it was when the group stage was rebranded, but it doesn't talk about the finals (which were under contract with the EBU until 1994). Bye!--Akrothiri (talk) 22:22, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
What do you read here on the official match programme produced by UEFA? What do you read here on the official match programme produced by UEFA?--Akrothiri (talk) 22:50, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Common name on an official match programme? What are you saying?--Akrothiri (talk) 23:35, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, but this is only your personal opinion. There is the UEFA logo on that poster, and the UEFA isn't similar to a supporter who can speak in "a common way", UEFA is the official source for the competion we are speaking of. And UEFA said "The 39th ECCC Final" for Milan-Barcelona in Athens. --Akrothiri (talk) 00:43, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hi, I'm posting the same message to you and Fasach Nua. After discussing possible alterations to the Defunct national teams template at ludicrous length and seeing the problems on both sides of this argument, I think I can offer a solution.

All team articles that have a recognised successor should be merged and redirected to their successor's article (eg South Vietnam national football team merged into Vietnam national football team). In the case of Russia/CIS/USSR there may be a case for having separate articles on the teams' histories for the sake of length but not 3 separate 'national team' articles. The introduction would explain the team's history, and historic names would be bolded - much like the current Congo DR national football team article. I explained the rationale here, and although there was only one reply, there wasn't any disagreement so it doesn't seem like it would be a controversial move.

This would make the 'other' section of the template meaningless as all the listed teams would simply be redirects. The template could have a footnote redirecting here and/or here for further information if you wanted.

Let me know what you think. Stu.W UK (talk) 11:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, fair point about the Czechoslovakia records, hadn't thought of that. I don't think the template as it stands is a problem either, but I thought I'd try and be constructive. Still, Fasach Nua got a ban for breaking 3rr so maybe that'll draw a line under things. Stu.W UK (talk) 13:31, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Champions League template

Your rationale here includes the line "it does look very crammed in". That's rather the point - fb templates are supposed to be compact navigational tools, not pretty tables. The previous version was significantly more compact (not too compact IMO) even at 1/3 width. I really think we should go with that even at the reduced width. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:08, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I've put a side-by-side comparison up at Template:UEFA Champions League/testcases. I don't see that the new layout is significantly more cramped than any other navbox - it is considerably more legible, as even with good eyesight I'm straining to read the text in the current version. I can see no real reason for not using the layout recommended by the navbox documentation for the sake of adding a bit more whitespace, especially when it forces the use of a smaller font. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 01:09, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
For me the one on the left is about three fourths the height, using the space better imo.
Now I have no problem in using a larger font-size, the one used currently at losing semi finalists perhaps for all on the old (which I think is what navbox standard would look without the font-size "corruption" in fb start, which perhaps should be removed to let Navboxes look a bit more how they should). But otherwise perhaps I would be more like the example I added on the testcases (a proposed change to fb start really the width can be discussed as it becomes narrower as you remove the font-size I tried to choose one that was the similar width) that as I see it make it look much less cramped just because of the smaller font I guess. chandler ··· 01:32, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
I like the look of your "new new" proposal. If that's okay with you, I think it's a fine compromise. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 01:46, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Ye I like it as well, it would just need {{fb start}} to be edited to remove the "font-size:95%" (which I think would make all navbox templates look better). I don't really know what kind of effect this would have on non-navbox templates, shouldn't be any big effect I guess. chandler ··· 01:52, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
