			To my ear, the article begins a bit oddly, by saying that Rivera "is" the first American of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent to play in the NFL. Since he's no longer playing in the NFL, "was" would be the natural choice in English. We're talking about a historical fact—about an event that has already occurred. It is no longer occurring. Accordingly, I made the change (among others) to "is", but Marine 69-71 quickly changed it back (saying, puzzlingly, that "was" implied that Rivera was dead!). I certainly don't feel strongly about it, but I think "is" is the best choice. After all, we'd never say that Bill Clinton "is" the 42nd President. He "was" the 42nd President.
